Well so far I have been doing well .. however, I have a question for all of you .. WHAT THE HECK is heavy cream???? There are other things that are on some low carb recipes that I don't have a clue what they are Maybe you guys can give me a hand with the ingredients or even where to buy some low carb foods in Ontario ..
heavy cream is the stuff you'd make whipped cream out of.
as for 'low-carb' food. there's no need to wrack your brains or burn up gas trying to find it. a food that is high in carbs is considered a 'starchy' food or a sweet food. like bread, potatoes, pasta, peas, and corn. and pies, cakes, ice cream, cookies. anything with flour or sugar.
fruit is a carb, because of the sugar content.
proteins are low carb. like chicken, fish, meat, most cheeses.
most vegs, especially the leafy greens, are low in carbs.
many low carbers shop only the perimeter of the grocery store because that's where the meat, milk and produce are... the high carb foods tend to be in the aisles...
and many low carbers have 'trigger' foods, those foods that make them feel lousy and send them on an eating binge. for some, it's bread, for others it's potato chips, or certain fruits. figure out what makes you nuts and don't go near it.
I never really thought about only hitting the outside isles of the grocery store .. but its soooo true!!
I had a good chuckle with your reply Jiffy!! I know what my trigger food / beverage is ... it's COFFEE!!!! God I love the stuff but I just cant seem to drink it black or without sugar .. sweeteners just dont seem to taste the same. I have been trying to ween myself off the stuff but when I get stressed I seem to reach for the coffee pot!! Any suggestions??
goomba, did i read that right???? when you're STRESSED, you reach for COFFEE????? good heavens!!!!!!!! switch to decaf!!!!
it sounds as if you're fueling a constant state of panic with caffeine and sugar!!!!
i know it's not as satisfying, but try to force yourself to use the artificial sweeteners. you'll get used to the taste soon enough, i hope. or try adding one of those flavoring syrups [after checking the carb levels first]. might be a decent substitute.
or, a more drastic approach would be to switch to herb teas. but i believe firmly in regular, moderate doses of caffeine.
maybe focusing on the stressors and trying to develop different coping mechanisms might help.
good luck... and i'll see if peachie has anything to add. she's a real coffee hound...
Jiff! Did I read that correctly that YOU want ME to give advice to someone who wants to kick the coffee thing? Here, let me clean off my computer....I just spit coffee all over it!
swish swish wipe wipe
I am unable to give you any advice on this subject Goomba, although I will admit to giving up the heavenly, lovely absolutely wonderful cream that I put in my coffee {{{{{sigh}}}}} but have not yet even BEGUN to entertain even the idea of kicking the habit. I will admit to drinking only decaf after 3pm. Most of the time I drink my coffee black....think sludge. Occasionally I will drink a cup with sweet and low and a dash of skim milk to hold of the hungries till my next meal.
If (BIG IF) I ever get to the point where kicking caffein moves up on my long list of priorities I will do the slow (miniscule) weaning...3scoops high test/1 scoop that "other" stuff! {{{{{whiping away tears as I type}}}}}}
Just a note on the sweeteners. For some people they do set off cravings. They do not seem to bother me. I am more bothered by thoughts of compulsive overeating which thankfully, with awareness, have lessened tremendously.
You guys are such a hoot!!! I can't believe I didnt find this site sooner!! You are all so supportive and **** the humor makes my day ..
I will be picking up a can of (do I dare say???) decaf tomorrow with the rest of the troops supplies. I think it is my best bet .. and I do love the herbal teas but had been unable to find the one I enjoy the most. I recently discovered that they had not pulled it from the shelves .. so I stocked up!!
but of course, peachie dear. you are a WEALTH of information. wit. ok i'll even admit there's some wisdom in there [even though you've had your wisdom teeth removed].
yeah,. i DO need a job.
and goomba... we're even worse face to face!!!!
hope everything is going well. and i TOLD you peachie would have a good idea. like mixing the caff and decaf coffees so you don't go cold turkey...
