Hi ! I'm just starting the Atkin's Diet and am so happy to find this board ! I'm still having some trouble finding some low carb foods ? For instance - I haven't been able to find any sugar free salad dressings anywhere ! What does everyone do for low carb breads, rolls etc. ? I've gone from store to store and not been able to find anything low. Do we have to either bake some or order some somewhere ? Any help will sure be appreciated !!! Thanks ! Denise
I have been using regular salad dressing and haven't had any problems. Stick to lower carb kinds like ranch and blue cheese. French and 1,000 Island are full of sugar & carbs. Read the labels and don't get the fat free or low fat. Sugar is added to make them half way edible.
Check out the recipe thread on this board, and also the recipe room at atkinsfriends.com for bread recipes and there may be some salad dressing recipes as well. I think there are lower carb breads out there but you really should wait until a later phase of the plan for them. You should keep your foods as natural as possible for the 2 week induction and most, if not all, of your carbs should come from veggies.
Check out the daily thread where we chit-chat about anything & everything.
Hi Jennifer ! Thanks for the suggestions ! Do you mean the Daily Thread on this Low Carb board ? Or somewhere else ? I've already checked out the recipes here (or those I could find) ? Question ? How do I change the number of messages that I'd like to view ? I'm only seeing just a few. I'll definately check out the Atkinsfriends site ! I actually started the diet about 6 days ago after reading about it in Woman's First magazine. They have a short version where they tell you to just have 20 grams of carbs a day for the first two weeks. My weigh in fell after 4 days on the diet and I was down 4.2 lbs. which I'm very happy about !!! I've not lost that much in one week - never mind 1/2 a week - since 1997 ! (except once last year after a vacation gain... which doesn't really count) Needless to say - I'm Thrilled !!! And happy to have found some others doing something similar. Thanks again for your helpful hints ! I just went out today and bought Dr. Atkin's newer version of his book which I'll read tonight. I'm sure it will answer alot of my questions too. Thanks again and take care ! Denise
I just lost a huge, welcome to the boards type of message!! Now I'm mad. Anyway, as a repeat, I buy all my foods from the local grocery store, nothing special, just READ LABELS carefully. My first induction phase netted me a 10 pound weight loss, so stick with it, it works! Good luck!
Thanks Sherrie ! Sorry about the lost post. I just made the mistake of stepping on the scale this morning, and it's heading in the wrong direction ! I think it's that TOM - so I'd better stay off it for awhile and tell myself that IT WILL COME BACK DOWN !!!
do not get on the metal monser daily!! (do as i say not as i do lol)
i do not eat the bread or pasta it is not worth it to me. i do not miss it i eat at bk and peel the bun off from the double quarter pounder, i will order hot subs without the roll.(yes i do get some strange looks but if i tell then i am wheat intolerant they stop the look)
in the diet section of yur grocerie store they will have atkins baking mix. although i would not use it unless there is no choice.
Hi Sue ! I'm not sure I can be as "strong" as you !!! I'd really like to try to find a low carb bread and I wouldn't mind taking it with me and switching it out. If they don't like it - tough ! It's our health at stake - right ? A friend at lunch's daughter is a diabetic and she's going to ask her where she gets her bread from ? I'm also going to check with store called Trader Joe's ? When I did a search on their website for sugar free stuff (there wasn't a lowcarb option)... something like 12 pages of stuff came up ! Not sure if they're stuff we can have yet or not ? I've got to read my books !!! Gotta run now and car pool the kids ! TTUL ! Denise
Hi and welcome Denise,
I think you'll be surprised at how much you don't miss the bread and stuff. Of course, I'm on Carbohydrate Addicts and can have carbs at my reward meal, but during the day I almost never crave carbs. The best part of lo-carbing it is that the horrible cravings disappear along with that feeling of never being full. Be careful with artificial sweeteners because they can trigger cravings. Also, a lot of people have had stalls when they use things like the Atkins bar regularly. So, if somewhere along the way your weight loss stops and you're doing everything right but the scale's not moving, think about stopping those products.
Chickadee
Hi Chickadee ! Thanks for the welcome and Great suggestions ! I've still not definately decided which plan to try yet ? I'll have to check out the Carbohydrate Addicts one too. How have you been doing on it so far ? I know what you mean about not being hungry all the time anymore... but I'm NOT sure I'll ever not want the breads ! I heard that Atkin's himself had a good low carb bread but I'm not too sure if we can find it anywhere or if we have to order it ? I just might have to find a good recipe and buy myself a bread machine ! I'll keep your ideas in the back of my mind if and when I start to stall. Thanks again ! Denise
Thanks Leens !!! So, which plan are you following ? There's so many different ones - just when I think I've decided on one - someone else mentions one and I'm so confused !!! I just looked at the new Protein Power Lifeplan and I like it less than the original book. I guess they changed publishers since they mention at the beginning how the old one made them stress weight loss in the first book ! That's what I want to be reading about ! If someone's really into alot of particulars... they may enjoy the new book. It goes into a more total healthy lifestyle including getting enough sun, meditation etc... It still doesn't seem too big on aerobics at all ? They have also turned around their opinon about artificial sweeteners - probably with good reason. They still like Stevia tho. But that's natural - right ? I'm still learning here... I started to lean towards Sugar Busters since it was a little more liberal than ATkin's - at least at the beginning. I just wonder what results people have been having on the different plans ? Maybe I'll post a question to that affect and see ? That might help me make up my mind ? Nice chatting with you ! Take care ! Denise
Thanks Pooky !!! So which plan are you following ? I'm taking a survey to try to decide on a particular plan myself ? Take care and have a Great day !!! Denise
For salad dressings if you really want to be healthy try olive oil and a flavored vinegar: tarragon, balsamic (but watch the carbs in this one). red wine etc. Olive oil is supposed to be so much better for you than the transfatty acid oils that are used in many of the commercial salad dressings.
I live overseas and have not had access to all the wonderful low carb baking mixes and such... but I wonder if that is not for the better. I suspect that if the "fakes" become a regular part of your meals, the jump back to the "real" carbs might be just that much easier. I've learned to do without. I just eat extra veggies (low carb) instead of the potatoes, rice , or pasta that my family eat. For breakfast I eat yogurt or cottage cheese and tuna and the occasional egg or two. For lunch I make sandwiches out of lettuce leaves. In pre-maintenance I added in 2 slices of Wasa Bread which is high in fiber. (not every day). I don't feel cheated in the least.
