Changing clothing brands as you shrink?

  • Has anyone else noticed that they may like/dislike brands as they get smaller? Granted moving from plus size to regular size presents a unique change, but I'm talking about being able to stay within a brand size wise but just not liking how the clothes fit anymore.

It's presenting a bit of a problem for me as I don't really know where to find affordable clothes I'll like anymore.

When I was plus size, I shopped pretty much exclusively at Dots and Torrid. Dots has a straight size section and I thought I would just move over to that section of the store...but I find I don't like the fit of the clothes! . Torrid being exclusively plus size I can't really shop there (except for shirts as I have a large bust and their size 0s allow enough room for me).

Before I lost weight, I hated Old Navy. It wasn't as if I couldn't fit into their standard sizes—I could—I just found the fit of their clothes wasn't to my liking. Now they're practically my favorite store! I fit nicely into their size 10s and Mediums and occasionally larges. I also now shop in Forever 21's straight size section—when I previously hated their plus size line.

Forever 21 and Old Navy are (luckily) affordable, but I had gotten so good at grabbing good deals at Torrid and Dots (I made out like a bandit with Torrid's clearance sales!), that I'm not sure what to do with these "new" stores. I'm also worried that when I finally get to goal I will have to search for some new stores to buy clothes from!

My shape changed which may have something to do with it (went from a pear to an hourglass), but I certainly can't be the only one out there who doesn't really know where to shop for clothes now.
  • Have you tried Deb? It's similar to Torrid, but way cheaper. And it carries sizes 0-13 and 14-24. So a little something for everyone. Also, Charlotte Russe, Rue 21, and Maurices. Just some suggestions.

Oh, and feel free to give me some pointers on snagging deals at Torrid :P
  • Have you tried wetseal? Charlotte ruse? Love those stores.
  • Bamber33 - The only store I've actually heard of on your list is Charlotte Russe. I forgot about them as I could never shop there before! I'll have to check them out as one just opened up at the mall down the road from me Unfortunately the other stores you mentioned have no locations on Long Island, but thank you anyway!

For Torrid, I just used to stalk their facebook page and I was on their email list. Whenever they would have a 50-80% clearance sale (it seems to happen every month or so) I would head over to that clearance section and stock up! I would get SOOO many things and I've never spent over $100 at that store. You have to be quick though, unless you're a size 0 as all of the other sizes will usually be sold out. Also, each time you want to buy, google "Torrid coupons" and you can usually find the code for the $10 off birthday coupon for that month. I would usually make my purchases online as the closest Torrid to me is over a half hour away.

KaeBae - another vote for Charlotte Russe? I definitely have to check them out! I never heard of Wetseal (turns out there's one at the mall I frequent!), but I'll will try them too. Thank you!

I'm not sure about Long Island but I know for sure Manhattan has a few locations of H&M. It's one of my favorite stores.

I've always shopped at Old Navy. Not so much because I love the clothes but the prices are just too good! Personally, I'd love to shop at Ann Taylor but I can't afford to much right now.
  • Old Navy has killer clearance deals, too. If you get on their email list, they send out 25% and 30% off codes, and this can be used on clearance stuff. Also, you can do returns at the store for free on most items. I buy a lot online with those coupon codes.

I never used to shop plus sizes (could have fit into Lane Bryant, but I never wanted to take the plunge-- I started as an 18), but once I lost weight, my favorite store became Charlotte Russe. Even at a size 8, I still mostly wore size L there (junior sizing). Some of their clothes are skanky, but a LOT of them are really cute and perfect for wearing to work, etc. Also, their normal prices are pretty good, and they have good clearance deals, too. They also have coupon code emails for online shopping and accept in-store returns.

Since I've lost weight, CR is definitely the store I shop most often, with Old Navy a close second, but I liked ON, even when I was at my largest.
  • I LOVE Forever 21 and Wet Seal. When I shrink down a bit, I'd love to get some Hollister pants. I thought they'd be way too juvenile, but my sister got some (she's TINY after losing a TON of weight, truly an inspiration to me), and they look awesome! Totally age appropriate for anyone up through their twenties.

I normally don't buy clothes that expensive, but they have great sales sometimes, I guess, and in a way, it would be a trophy buy for me. Their sizes run small, so to be able to fit is just something to gloat over.

The only thing that I think sucks about losing weight is if I lose 2 sizes I'll have to say bye bye to Torrid. I love that store so much.

This is the dilemma I'm having now. I can get away with Torrid shirts, but the pants are just too big now. It's bye bye Torrid and I'm not really too happy about that!

I'm almost positive I've seen H&Ms around here! I'll have to check them out.

Oh yeah I racked up when they had a half off clearance sale at ON! Unfortunately the clothes I got there are about a size too big now. I didn't really expect to go down a size that quickly.

Now I REALLY want to go check out Charlotte Russe with all of you praising it!

I haven't even tried Hollister! Not sure I would want to until I get into the single digits, but I'll keep that in mind.
  • My goal size is to be a size 14 (for now). I was a 14 in high school, and I LOVED American Eagle jeans. So my goal for now is to get into a 14 so that I can wear a pair of AE jeans. Well, today....my babygirl and I stopped by a goodwill. And low and behold, I found a pair of size 14 American Eagle jeans that look brand new!!! For $7.50!!! So tonight, I walked an extra mile. Thinking of fitting into those jeans the whole time
  • sontaikle I have been overweight for the longest, like ever since I could afford clothes that weren't from goodwill. I have no fashion sense w/out them lol. =(
  • SarRawrNaomi I have been overweight since forever and I just found Torrid about 2 years ago. So mad I didn't find them sooner! I LOVE their clothes.

It's bittersweet really, I'm happy to be in size 10s, but sad that I can't shop in one of my favorite stores anymore (unless something runs small..)

ETA: for those of you who can shop at Torrid, they are having a denim giveaway contest this week! Check it out and maybe you can win some free stuff http://www.facebook.com/Torrid
  • I don't shop either of these places so I don't know how the clothing compares but Hot Topic is owned by the same company as Torrid. Maybe the clothes are similar enough to find things you like?
  • when torrid opened it was the female hot topic clothes in larger sizes... That is to say almost exclusively goth with jeans and graphic tees thrown in. This was like 2000-2001ish. At some point between 2004 and 2006 torrid turned way more business casual and girly girl with a small section of their original appearal. those who like the things like corsets and graphic tees head to hot topic. those who like the cute business-y clothes head to forever 21 or charlotte russe
