Default Anyone wear a wig due to hair loss ?

I'm not talking hair loss due to dieting either. I went through premature ovarian failure in my early thirties - thought it was PCOS and it may well have been initially but I have dramatic hair loss and it causes me HUGE anxiety. My doctor feels it is hereditary and not due to any meds or diet and I agree. SO now I am thinking of going in the direction of a wig and was hoping for some tips or personal experiences. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. I am really having a major hard time with this. My hair was always the one thing about my physical appearance that I really loved but now all I do is look at everyone else's hair with envy and feel like everyone is looking at me.

Hi witchyonadiet! I understand losing your hair can be a very distressing experience. About half of my hair fell out when I was younger because of lack of nutrition. It got to the point where I was scared to even brush my hair because so much was falling out. I went from having normal/thick hair, to extremely fine/thin hair, which really sank my self-esteem. I too felt very self-conscious about my hair. That’s when I looked into buying a wig.

If you have the money I would recommend searching for a salon in your area that offers custom-made human hair wigs. First you would go in for a consultation, and if you decide you wanted a wig made they would take your head measurements and go over what length, style and hair color you would like your wig. They make the wig fit perfectly and look as natural as possible. Some salons also offer weekly washing and styling of your wig for a small price. I have two custom-made wigs, both costing about $1,500 each, but they were totally worth it.

If you don’t want to spend that much money on a wig, you could buy ready-made wigs. Many beauty supply stores sell them. I have 3 that I bought for about $50 each. They don’t look as natural, and they made my head itchy if I wore them more than an hour or two.

My hair has since grown back, but I still wear wigs every now and then.

Hi witchy: I haven't experienced this problem myself but my mother has this issue. She has a thyroid condition that has caused severe thinning of her hair..coupled with severe stress when her husband repeatedly went through cancer treatments. She recently bought a wig to make herself feel more confident. It really looks great. She went to a wig place and they fitted it and showed her how to care for it etc.

She has also started going to a hairdresser every week and has them wash and blow her hair out-it looks really good. It works for her but I dont know that it will work for everyone.

As for the wig, try it on, make sure you feel comfortable in it. Maybe buy a cheaper version at first just to get used to it and to see if you feel comfortable/confident wearing one out in public. Several years ago my mother spent a fortune on a human hair one but felt super uncomfortable wearing it out in public-it was a total waste of money. Now, several years later she feels more comfortable sporting it out in public.

I wore a wig for a year and a half while receiving treatments for Alopecia. I loved my wigs. I once had very thick hair, I hit puberty and all **** broke loose. Before I started on medication, I probably was 3/4 of the way bald. Talk with your doctor, go to a dermatologist if you can afford one. If you want to look into a wig, the one's that I used were called Cyberhair. They're extremely high quality. I had 2 over a year and half period. I swam in them, exercised, went on rollercoasters, everything. They're very light and breathable.

If your doctor proscribes a wig for you, you can write it off in your taxes as a medical expense. They are expensive. Mine were $1200 a piece.

If you have any more questions, you can message me, I'll be happy to talk to you about it.

I wear wigs. To this day, the doctors have not figured out why I started losing my hair about a year and a half ago. I've been tested for thyroid issues, PCOS, nothing. My current Internal medicine doctor thinks it may be my blood pressure medication, so she put me on a new one. It does seem like my hair is growing but I think it's too soon to tell.

Once I got used to wearing wigs, I grew comfortable with them. I have a whole collection now - at least 20 of them. I will say, though, that I struggle with dating and wearing wigs.

to you!

I would suggest that you get a lace front wig but DO NOT GLUE unless you have to. My hair started shedding and coming out in oodles and oodles. It would appear that if I touched, washed, combed or brushed my hair it was everywhere. So I started wearing wigs and I always got human hair because I like to change my hair style frequently. Then I started using lace front wigs because they look so natural. I don't spend more than $60 because they store I go to always has a 30% off sale on all of their wigs. The first one I bought I let them glue it on and because I have oil in my skin the glue gunked up and it was messy. I started putting it just behind my hair line and it looked more natural. Everyone one that didn't know thought it was my natural hair. You have to take care of them like you do your hair and they will last if their human. My neice does hair so she keeps my wigs looking really good. When I can't get to her I did it myself. It takes a minute but they look great. If you know how you like your hair and you can reasonably do a lace front behind your hair line your will be fine.

I went to the dermatologist and he told me I had over processed my hair and the chemicals were eating up my scalp. He gave me a script and the change has been amazing. I can't put chemicals in my hair anymore so I'm learning my how to work with my hair. The crown of my head was BALD and now it's filling in. It doesn't itch near as much. But I still have my wigs because I know I'm gonna want something different over the summer.

Good luck and happy hunting.
