This is such a fun thread. I still have lots of weight to lose so I am not looking to start investing in a large wardrobe yet, but have started paying attention to style. Such a shock, me, interested in style. :)

I am going to pick up a few new, more stylish pieces. I saw a segment on the Today show about mixing 6 pieces of clothing into enough different looks for a month. It seems that there is some experiment getting a good bit of publicity (http://sixitemsorless.com/)

The idea of managing with a small wardrobe seems to fit well with those of us still in transition. Instead of just buying what looks good to me, I am going to try to actually plan my fall wardrobe with pieces that will mix and match and can be changed with accessories. That can be quite hard for me because I am style challenged. :)

I definitely need to get a white crisp button up the front shirt and I really want to try a boyfriend sweater!

Europe loves 'hot pants' (don't know their 21st century name) and leggings....

Not a look for me but I've been wearing my cobalt blue linen skirt this week. I'm so ahead of the curve, over here in the sticks!

NY Fashion Week this week, I think. You're on the front row for us, saef.

Thanks from me, too, Saef, for the comprehensive fashion report from the Big Apple! Very helpful.

It's come to my attention that women who don't yoyo all over the place for years at a time, have more than one winter coat! Imagine!
I'm thinkin' a camel coat with a cobalt blue scarf ... hmmm ....

saef - thanks so much for your great posts! I always enjoy reading anything you write but these were especially fun as I was missing the way you see trends come and go in NY. I share your feelings about camel - the WORST color ever on me but this too shall pass, right? ;)

You girls are great! So far I've bought a sweater dress, a sweater, leggings, brown tailored work dress... and I'm going to splurge on these knee high boots that (wait for it) actually now zip up over my much smaller than before calf! I'm going to buy them when I put in a week of hard workouts, as a reward - and because I need them.

I've seen everywhere that the military thing is in full motion. Jackets with many pockets here and there, anoraks, cargo pants, cargo skinny pants; also in terms of jackets the biker jackets are back (you know, with the diagonal zipper). Et cetera. I saw Clinton, from What Not To Wear this morning in The View, there was a little bit of a fall fashion show and those were the things I remembered.

I saw a bunch of military/camoflage stuff at Macy's last weekend, and it was covered with studs and rhinestones and glittery stuff. Bizarre. Glittery cammo? Really?

Well, I think the point is that they're trying to make it chic and feminine. I kinda like the combination. I'm super girly and feel that if I wear military as it is I would look rather masculine, so I like the studs (not crazy about the rhinestones, though). The fashion show in The View that I saw yesterday was based on Macy's fashion trends.

I'm super girly, too -- I have long hair, nice nails, love eye makeup, etc -- but I'm getting rather tired of the trend that everything has to be covered in studs AND glitter AND fringe AND buckles. I'm in my 40's, though, so maybe it's just a younger trend. My only "military" shirt is a freebie that my niece (who is in the Army) picked up at the recruiting station for me. So what do I know? LOL

What a great thread! Saef, thanks for sharing your observations and insights.

I'm in the midwest, and we're always a little behind the fashion curve. I'm seeing the knit ruffle/flower scarves, though. I'm far enough north that pretty soon, the only thing that will be in style is wool, down, and Uggs.

lets see.. camel colored skirts and whatnot, military-ish clothes, tall boots with buckles, rose gold watches .. the list goes on and on! lol

Well, maybe the studs are for younger people. I don't know, I don't have anything studded. But more than the studs and the hardware on purses, boots and jackets, it's the colors. Military green, gray, camel, etc. Also you can adapt it to your own age and style. I like fashion but I don't kill myself over it (that's why I don't own anything studded... just not my kinda thing) so I adapt things to my age (29) and my style and preferences. ;)

BonTemps57 09-28-2010 03:42 PM

I hate when trends go over board. I'm sorry, but it just looks ridiculous. Sure a couple of studs can be fun, but when you add some frills or lace on top of a boxy, structured jacked it is just ridiculous.

Personally, I like to get inspiration from things I see around me. Army/olive green and gray are fan favorites of mine right now, boots with fun tights (think little dots or hearts) and layers.

I really like the six items or less idea, probably something I should work on. The only problem is I work with CAbi clothing and it can be hard to not snatch up every last outfit.

There is actually a really cute blog post by cabicanary.com about what they are doing with their fall line.

If you had to choose your 6 pieces that are currently in your closet what would they be?

sal27253 09-28-2010 05:27 PM

Hey Bontemps! Interesting questions :) I'd pick:

American Eagle Boyfriend Jeans (comfort clothes)
Bongo Jean skirt (I've been wearing it since 1999 it fits at every size!)
Corral button down
Corral cardigan
White scoop neck T
Black cap sleeve dress

Those are the items I pack when I go on vacation. They can take me through about 2 weeks!
