You'll need to bleach out the black first or no colour will really take on it. you can do this at home though! If your hair is in good condition then I'd say bleach it once, see how yellow/orange it is then bleach again before putting the dye colour you want on it.

You want it to be a pale-ish yellow before dying it ideally, but even if it's patchy and got orange/brown bits the perm reddy dye should cover that up. Just don't dye over black hair as it's a total waste of time.

Good luck!

Please please please don't lighten your hair at home - especially not that much. If you can't afford hair color, you probably REALLY don't want to spend the money on corrective coloring.

There are tons of mid to lower priced hair salons that could handle this, go in for a consult.

I know lots of people do this kind of heavy chemical stuff at home but IMO, it almost always ends in straw-like disaster.

I've been doing my hair black for years, and one day I wanted a red hue to it. I put red on top of the black, and it took - particularly in good/outdoor lighting. It wasn't super red, but it was red enough.

Please do NOT strip your hair at home. Don't do it. Just don't. If it goes badly (which it likely will), you could end up with orange straw on your head, and it will cost you a LOT more to get it professionally fixed.

You may want to check out a local beauty college. They're always looking for guinea pigs, and will do your hair for a tiny fraction of what a salon will. The students are always watched by their teacher, so any "mistakes" can be fixed before they get bad. One of the schools near me does full foil highlights for $20, which is as cheap as an at-home kit, but you get professional results.
