Maintainers Moving in March
It's a hard job, starting threads in an Internet forum, but someone's gotta do it.
So where did February go? Tuesday, March 1: 15:07 rowing on the Concept 2 for 3,055 meters at 2:25 for 500 meters and 41 s/m, for a projected total of 6,134 60 minutes weights 45 minutes spin class I ran into the instructor in last night's circuit training class, the one in which a 20-year-old woman injured herself. He said he couldn't sleep all night after it happened. He went to see her today; so did the gym's manager. From them, I heard more details. It appears that her ankle collapsed & then she twisted her knee. (Her mother has said that she has weak ankles & has sprained that one several times.) The x-ray of her knee hasn't come back yet so they're still not sure what was injured. I wish her well. I hope never to witness another injury in a class at the gym. |
Saef - I had to go back to last month's thread to see what happened. How scary. I know things like that happen - my sister-in-law broke her ankle (about 3 years ago) just walking across her lawn. Stepped in a small hole and down she went. Surgery and several pins.
So this is not a thread I usually post in - I often hang out in the weights and resistance thread because for several years I was doing a lot of lifting. But I have slacked off badly, and I need some accountability to keep me, no, get me back, in my exercise routine. To that end, I'll commit to a half hour of movement tomorrow. It will either be a combo of elliptical/treadmill or swimming (have to check the pool hours, as there have been HS meets going on lately). |
March 1: new month. Badly wanted to skip tonight as Tuesday is always my hard day to get to the gym as I work 7-7 and then have to eat dinner. But I didn't want to start March off with a non exercise day.
March 1: 45 minutes (mostly) running on treadmill. Totals: 1 day 45 minutes |
Thank you, saef.
Pat! Good to see you. 1st March: TM, rowing, yoga/stretching. Nothing much but enough to stretch out after the previous day's weights. 2 March: enforced rest day as I have a telephone meeting scheduled for the time I usually go to the gymn. |
March 1: two 8-min dog walks

- 2 9-min dog walks - 15 min bike trainer March 3: - 2 9-min dog walks |
3 March: gymn.
TM warm-up. Squats, deadlifts and single-legged deadlifts. Yoga and stretching. Feeling pleased. |
Wednesday, March 2:
45 minute spin class 45 minutes Pilates routine on my own How very, very good it felt, after a tough day at the office, working hard while trying to attain escape velocity from this job before my vacation, to go to the gym & get out of my head & just exert myself. When I got to spin class, a bit early, to warm up on the bike, there was a guy there, maybe 10 years older than me, in sweat pants & a t-shirt that aren't the usual gym wear (heavy & oversized & cottony for what people wear now). He is a newbie. We chatted before class. He asked me how long I'd been doing spin. He said he's trying to become healthier & has now done four spin classes after just joining the gym. He has trouble keeping up. I wanted to hug him but of course did not. I just said how great that was, and how fast he'll probably progress. I told him how I didn't even dare sign up for a spin class beforehand because all the gears adjusting the fit of the bike had really intimidated me. (I shared my own difficulties, as I did NOT want to sound condescending.) And I talked about how so many people are afraid to even set foot in a gym. I made it clear that I think what he's doing is great. I really, really hope he sticks with it. I hope I come back from my vacation & see him in my first spin class back, and that he'll look savvy. (Or at least be wearing more breathable clothes.) |
Thursday, March 3:
60 minutes arc trainer, hill intervals, resistance at 9 60 minutes Pilates class I'm having one of my extremist moments, wondering if I can get in some cardio at the gym tomorrow morning before the car picks me up at 8 AM to take me to the airport. The gym opens at 5:45 AM. But I know I'll end up scurrying around doing last-minute stuff all morning before I go. So probably not. |

Friday 4th March
Aim: to stretch out my tight muscles after yesterday's weights session. TM - increased the incline a little after a few minutes, and then again. Rower - sat behind two female members of the university rowing club. It was fun to watch their technique. Yoga and stretching - I've added a hip stretch as when the L hip is tight the whole lower back, leg, knee, foot circus wants to join in. The hip isn't always the troublemaker but it certainly can be, it seems. I'm planning two days rest. I have a report to write (it's the third or fourth rewrite) so I should incorporate active rest (aka brisk walking) every so often. |

10 min stair climber/elliptical mix thing on "cross train" program 3x10 back extension alternating with 3x10 roman chair leg lift 10 slowly lowering myself tricep dips 3 10 second hangs from pullup bar attempt at girly-style pushups, but my wrists were unhappy so I only did 5 3x20 leg lifts on the sides, only a 1x10 front, none back because I was in a hurry stretching March 5: 10 min dog walk 45 min swim -- first 550 yards in 12:55, a new PR! Then I took a break and did a ladder up to 5 lengths (1 fast 1 slow, 2 fast 2 slow . . . 5 fast 5 slow, 4 fast 4 slow, etc) to make up 36 laps total. Total time 45:41 not counting the break. 5 min stretching When I was almost done with my swim the pool started getting crowded and a guy came to share my lane with me. OMG that guy was SO FAST. We pushed off from the wall at the same time, and by the time I was halfway through 1 length he had done a whole lap. I watched him swim underwater. His feet were flexible like flippers. Crazy. I felt better because the two guys in the lane next to me were beginners training for their first triathlons and I could pretty much match them for speed, but they had to rest after each length and I just kept going. |

Catching up on What I Did During My Vacation:
Friday, March 4: 60 minutes stationary bike in motel "fitness center" (windowless room in Best Western with a treadmill, a bike, padded thing to stretch on, a TV that kept losing its reception & no wipes of any kind). Walking in Charleston, mostly along the Battery Saturday, March 5: 60 minutes bike, or just about, as seat dropped beneath me toward end. After wedding of cousin's daughter, a relief to lose the shoes & slip into jeans & walk in Charleston again. Sunday, March 6: Ran 30 minutes on treadmill, because bike wouldn't work, at a steady 4.5 mph, grade of 2.5. I think I went a little over 2 1/2 miles. And walked & walked in the city, touring Fort Sumter & two houses. Monday, March 7: 60 minutes on bike, as knees were sore from previous day's running & walking. More walking, this time on a plantation, then in the afternoon, walking in the city, seeing three more houses. Tuesday, March 8: 60 minutes on bike, then walking a lot around two different plantations. Wednesday, March 9: 60 minutes on bike, with seat again dropping out from under me (this machine is unsafe) and walking around one plantation, then inside a museum at the city, then at a large antique shop with maybe 100 dealer booths. Thursday, March 10: Home, arriving far later than planned due to a flight delayed five hours, and made myself get out to the gym at 8:30 PM for 60 minutes on the elliptical, resistance at 8, half backward. Whew. I'd describe this vacation as stimulating, rather than relaxing. The flight delay -- so many unplanned hours at the airport -- at least allowed me to start reading a fascinating book from a small academic publisher about the women who ran the plantations, which I'd picked up from the Drayton Hall gift shop. |

:wave:Good to have you back, saef.
Gymn today. Squats, deadlifts, single-legged deadlifts. Yoga and stretching. And information exchange, and emotional support. (It's a community gymn and most of the old lags* were there.) * lag=prison inmate |
It's good to be back, though mostly because of how pathetic the Fitness Room was. (The stationary bike had lost the plastic straps that hold your feet to the pedals. Now I know that it is impossible to do sprints if you don't have those to steady you.) Otherwise, I just loved Charleston & the remaining countryside not yet taken over by subdivisions. I'd never before been to the Low Country. It's as beautiful as a dream.
Friday, 11 March: 15:08 rowing on the Concept 2, doing 3,006 meters at 2:25 per 500/meter, 41 s/m, for a projected total of 6,085 60 minutes weights 60 minutes yoga 45 minutes on arc trainer, intervals, resistance at 9 That's a lot of gym time, even for me. I'll explain. I was at the gym to distract my mind. My car was on a little rise in the pavement on a flooded parking lot. The escape route was even deeper than the water by the car. There was nothing I could do. I could either stay at home, staring at the car, watching the water come up, or go to the gym. So I went to the gym. And while I was gone, a truck with a pump came & started pumping out the floodwaters. I found it there when I returned. Stood there with my yoga mat in its holster over my shoulder & was thankful. My car is safe. I can drive it to the grocery store. Other neighbors two blocks away were not so fortunate. |

45 minute spin class 60 minute Pilates class My legs are sore today & so are my hip flexors. That's what we were working on in yoga yesterday: Opening up the hips. Mine apparently prefer to remain closed. |

Sunday, 13 March:
15:07 rowing 2,989 meters on the Concept 2 at 2:38 for 500 meters, at 39 s/m, for a projected total of 5,812 60 minutes weights 45 minute spin class, with hill sprints at the end Hard to get up an hour earlier on the first day of Spring Forward time, but I made it. And rowed poorly due to... TMI alert ... TMI coming ... here's the TMI ... I rubbed a bit of skin off my butt while rowing, due to my underwear developing a wedgie, and this pain definitely affected my time. Now my butt is all slathered in ointment & in a moment will hunt down my donut cushion. (Once I remember where I put it.) |

March 11: - 18 min elliptical intervals - 18 min strength - 5 min stretching March 12: two 15-min dog walks March 13: swim intervals, 30 mins total. I finally managed to make it 50 yards in less than 1 minute! (barely, but still!) |
Wow. I have been in major gym withdrawal without realizing it. Worked out today with my headphones and on and totally rocked it. I wanted to go longer but it is my lunch break after all.
I'm thinking I might go ahead with my plan to buy a road bike even though I have the tailbone issue. If I get a bike with a less upright posture, I think my tailbone ought to be fine. My current bike is very upright and there is no way to not be upright since it has straight handlebars. March 14: - 18 mins total stationary bike at >=90rpm, somewhere around 4.5 miles - core strength: - hip circles on swiss ball 45 sec each direction - marches swiss ball 1 min - kicks swiss ball 1 min - alternate arm/leg supermans swiss ball about 2 min - 2x10 swiss ball crunches - 2x10 swiss ball jackknifes - 20 each side bicycles - 5 min stretching |
Monday, March 14:
60 minutes arc trainer, hill intervals, resistance at 9 60 minutes circuit training class, which alternates cardio stations with weights and body weight exercises and Pilates moves |

15:06 rowing on the Concept 2 for 2,858 meters at 2:37 for 500 meters at 40 s/m, for a projected total of 5,711, which is not bad considering my butt is still tender where I rubbed it raw two days ago 60 minutes weights 45 minute spin class in the evening, a killer class. The woman just to my right, 20 years younger than me, made me push myself harder. I found out after class that she's a spin instructor, and was taking the class to see how our regular instructor cues various moves, so she can sub for another instructor on Sunday morning. Well, that explains it. And gives me some perspective on how hard I drive myself sometimes. |
Add to March 14 15-20 min dog walk.
March 15: - 3 min warmup stationary bike - inchworms to warm up - 3x10 push-ups using the smith machine at notch 6 - 3x10s hangs from pullup bar - 2x10 lat pull downs, first set 70# second 65# - an additional 15-20 mins or so of dancing around with a pair of 2# dumbbells and a swiss ball doing various things - stretching |

LOL Saef, that would be a good workout song. I was rocking out to La Bouche ("Sweet Dreams"), Justin Timberlake ("Sexyback"), Shakira ("Hips Don't Lie"), Sting ("Desert Rose"), and some old school MC Hammer. Yup, that's right, I was doing crunches singing along to "Can't Touch This."
|
STOP!!!
Hammertime. That man could seriously dance. It wasn't just all about the parachute pants & the knee-flapping moves. Thanks, Jessica. Now I know what needs to be on my iPod next time I download a slew of songs. Wednesday, March 16: 45 minute spin class 45 minute Pilates routine afterward Thinking about Japan today & trying to be kinder to people in general. |

And Jessica, the older MC Hammer albums are a big part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Love them, and often dance around the garage to them as well. Without parachute pants though, I'm not quite that cool. Yet. |
