Maintainers Chat: Week of May 17 - 22

Good morning!
I just bought Flaming Lips tickets - good seats too! :D
I maintained my weight from last week with some little ups :( and downs :D. Now that the summer-like weather has returned I'm going to do some serious dieting to finally shed the last 6 lbs. I've been a member of 3FC for over 3 years and it's time I got to goal. This is getting :o. Lots of BBQed meats and big salads. Not much in the way of carbs. That will be the plan for the rest of May and all of June. After May no TV in the evening. Lots and lots of other stuff to do instead! Have a great Monday all! Dagmar :dancer: |
weekend was all work,work,work-- but today's about rest... the rest of the week I have some work training thing which is going to get quite physical (management of violence and agression), so I am hoping to add to my excersise through that. I am looking for a valid reason to walk into town today --kinda sucks that all my friends are at work, and at the moment I cannot spare money for mindless shopping.
|
Good morning! Did we have a week-end? I think I must have missed it. ;)
|
Good morning everyone! Meg, did you avoid those blueberry pancakes?
Dagmar - isn't it so much easier to eat healthy in the summer? Grrrk and Ward! I had a pretty good weekend, although as usual too short. Saturday morning Carter and I went to cheer on DH in a 5k race (DH came in at 23:59, beating his previous PR by nearly 30 seconds!), then I took my parents to the airport. They ended up getting stuck in Chicago overnight because their flight from Chicago to LA was cancelled, but made it back to LA Sunday. We went to the big local art fair we always go to and bought a couple of prints. Luckily our favorite artists were not there or we would have spent way too much money! Then Saturday night we went to the symphony. Sunday was chores day, but I did get in a swim workout. The scale damage from a week with my parents is only about half a pound. What a relief! That may even be water weight. Marie, your stained glass looks beautiful! If you are ever in Indiana, you can go to the Kokomo opalescent glass factory and buy glass pieces directly from their shop. They have a big room full of pieces of glass of all colors, and you just pick out whatever you want. I need to revamp my workout plans starting TODAY. Yesterday I went to the library and checked out a book that has a good intermediate sprint triathlon training plan in it, which just happens to be 9 weeks, which is exactly how long I have until my first tri of the season. The only problem is that the training schedule in there is pretty different from what I have been doing, so I need to figure out how to adjust myself or adjust the plan (or both). |
I should find out today what (if any) my insurance will pay for PT, but in the mean time this medicine my doctor gave me is WONDERFUL! It's a topical NSAID called Pennsaid that is specifically for knees. I rub in about 8 drops 3-4 times a day and it really has helped with the pain (guessing that I should have gone to see him when the pain was really bad!). It felt so good this morning that I almost did my workout, but my doctor said not to do anything until after meeting with the PT first. I hope I'll get in this week at least.
Today will be busy. I'm dealing with two computers at work that are not working properly (one has a virus and I can't get the anitvirus software to work). Tonight we have to move furniture because we're getting our carpets cleaned tomorrow. Wednesday I have a dental appointment. After that things will be back to normal. |
Dagmar, I use copper foil method. I really dislike lead cane but there is lead and zinc cane in the bevel borders. Mostly I make DH do that because I tend to melt the lead. :)
Kim, I hope you’re feeling better today. Pat and sznn, with Pat’s description, I now know where Smith Rock is – we would have driven by it on our move to Oregon. It’s about 170 miles north of where I live off 97. And an outdoor quilt show, I’ll need to look into that. I’m getting to be quite a fan of Bend. Allison, I will think of you and PT at my PT appointment in 2 hours. My dr told me ice, Aleve and PT. The PT starts today but the ice and Aleve have made a great improvement. BTW, he did say no to the other oral meds. Meg, I was thinking of lunges while reading your post and thought how great it was that you could do them again. Then you said laps of track lunges!!! OMG, that sounds like pure, unadulterated torture. I’ve moved you into my mental nuts category. Dagmar, sounds like you have a great plan for getting to your goal. Those last 5 are a pest. Include me in the last 5 need to go. Ward, you missed the weekend because they are really 24 minutes long rather than the customary 24 hours. Mondays are the day that those other 48 hours drag by. Jessica, WTG on minimal parent visit damage on the scale. That’s a great accomplishment. Just out of curiosity, is your normal triathlon training not working? I’m back at work after my Disney conference. It’s hard to want to get into the swing of it but after cleaning my desk (neat piles now) I see I have no choice… Marie |
Okay. I found out that the therapist my doctor recommended will cost in excess of $75 per visit (that would be close to $1000 for the month!). I called around and found another one who takes my insurance and I made an appointment for a week from Wednesday.
|
Marie, LOL, the problem is that I didn't have a "normal" triathlon training schedule! I have just been swimming, biking, and running with no structured program. I think the structure will help me improve and be more ready for the race.
Allison, I hope the PT works out for you! |
Happy new week everyone! I've been dealing with the lovely combination of TOM and the flu for the last 2+ days. It's a little better today, so I'm hoping it's almost over. There are no big challenges this week and it should be a good OP week.
|
Marie - check it out here Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show/ I've been several times, and it's awesome. My friend works at a quilt store in Bend.
ALlison - glad you've got the PT thing figured out. I hope it helps. It did for me. It's :sunny: here today and NO wind !! Yippee! I've still got this nasty cold and it's moved into my chest. WIsh it would be gone.... Hoping to take my bike for a leisurely spin this afternoon and at least start conditioning my butt for longer rides. |
I can't say good morning to everyone as it's way past that!
We had "staff development" day at school and I went to the Scholastic warehouse all day with a fellow librarian. Great fun! We ate lunch at Panera and I searched the menu online ahead of time to minimize damage. I have hovered between 124-126 for weeks now and I'm bound and determined to get back to 123 so this week's goal will be to try to hover between 123-125. Now to do it! This morning I was exactly 125... Hello to everyone!!! |
hi ladies!
thank you for the thoughts... i am in a very weird place right now... i have been having some sort of allergic reaction (i think) all day today and most of yesterday so my hands, feet and even my knees have been swollen despite benadryl... go figure! i guess my body is just warning me to be good to it instead of downing tons of crap because i wanted to drown my sorrows in food post bf break up... i did over eat a lot this weekend but with this allergic reaction i am not sure how much i have gained becasue of it (up 5 lbs right now but you should see the swelling!!!) after a great work out with my trainer, i am kicking back and enjoying survivor hope your monday's all rocked!!! |
Horrible horrible day today... So, my already bloated & PMS-y solution was Chinese food for dinner. :dizzy: It was fantastic, not beating myself up about it. Had a good birthday weekend, ate a lot of cake & chicken nuggets, TOM started today (and with it only being every three months I totally forget how terrible it is day one...), had to investigate a termination of a high level employee today so lots of interviews trying to get to the bottom of some out of the blue theft (lots of crying and betrayed feelings out in the field today - highly placed friend of the family who owns my company), old filling drilled out and new cavity around it drilled and filled this morning and is on 'root canal watch' (I'll know within a couple of days if I have to do it, once the deadening wears off I guess), hit my head on a monitor hard enough to see stars, 4.5 hours of sleep last night... Just icky day. I'll start my better eating and back on the exercise wagon tomorrow.
 to all! |
Shannon, sorry your day has been crappy. I definitely hope tomorrow starts off much better!
Kim, any idea what you are allergic to that's causing all the swelling? I had a reaction like that to a medication - I remember it being VERY unpleasant, so I hope it subsides soon. Michele, you can get the weight back down! I'm in the same boat of hovering just above where I want to be, so I'll be right there with you. Allison, I hope PT goes well for you! I've been sick all day... actually went back to bed most of the afternoon and now my BF is watching a low budget horror film so I'm removing myself from the living room - just not my type of entertainment! |
So sorry your day sucked Allison!! Hope tomorrow is much better.
Kim-- hope your swelling goes down tomorrow!! |
Wow, sounds like the crappy monday virus hit really hard yesterday!
You can count me in on the blah feeling. Nothing serious, just a carry over from a bad sunday. Looks like it turned a corner monday evening & everything looks better now. Looks like it is going to be a sunny day, so I'm biking to work to enjoy the weather. have a great day all, rabbit |
Not exactly crappy - just still sick. Sigh. I'm off to bed.
|
I hope everyone is feeling better, physically and emotionally, today! And that the sun is shining everywhere(I always feel better in sunny weather) :sunny:
I am trying one of my new weight routines this morning and am off to do that now :lifter:. I'm probably going for a bike ride :bike2: this evening as DH is off at a seminar. I again suggested that we put the TV away in the garage after May and he responded with . I never have it on in the evening when he's not here but if he turns it on I invariably end up in front of it. TV can be just as addictive as anything else . Have a great Tuesday all! Dagmar :bike: :dancer: |
Well that's annoying! I just broke the handle on my resistance bands. Went to the amazon.com website only to find out none of the resistance bands I want for a replacement are available to be shipped to Canada.
I'm finding that with athletic shoes as well. Some kind of trade thing I suppose. There are no fitness equipment stores near me that stock what I want. Darn! I guess I'll get out the duct tape and see what I can do. Dagmar  |
well swelling is not gone today...not even close! ah... this is sooo unpleasant! sooooo going to a doc tonight (not sure what they can do about it but hey, i am hopeful!)
dagmar - guess you are just too strong for your own good eh? wink wink... here's hoping tues treats everyone better!!! |
I am feeling better today, but will still try to get some rest to get fully recovered by tomorrow. My food choices will definitely be OP today to accelerate the healing process. I'm hopeful that I will feel up for a run by this afternoon and be able to play in the softball game tonight, but we'll see about all that as the day goes on.
Sounds like yesterday was a germy mess for many, so here's to a healthier Tuesday! |
Today isn't starting out to be hugely better than yesterday... I did get my yoga in this morning, and brought my running clothes so hope to get out for a run one way or another. Might be on the way to pick up DH - the exercise clothes will be a big hit at the daycare pickup. :)
Hope everyone is feeling better today! |
What a yucky Monday!
My dd was up during the night vomiting but she thinks it was something she ate and is at school now. Hopefully I won't get a call later. She and her sister went to Chipotle and the movies and ate JUNK. Maybe she won't want to eat so much junk in the future! Dreary, drizzly and cold here..... |
It must be feeling horrible week. I am cancelling everything I had planned and staying home. My head feels like it's doubled in size and my innards aren't doing so well either.
My sister and I had a wonderful time in Northern California last week on our RV trip. We stayed in Brookings (OR) our first night, then in Arcata (CA) the rest of the time. Beautiful scenery, incredible architecture in Arcata, Eureka and Ferndale especially. Lots of walking and hiking. We decided to sell the RV, though--just too hard to deal with now that I no longer live in OR. I think we can rent an RV for a week or two a year and it'll be easier and cheaper. Okay, some water, then back to bed. . . |
Ack. My head is killing me today...
|
What is going on around here?? Everyone is sick/injured/allergic/etc! :grouphug: (I can't catch it by reading this thread, can I? ;) ) Seriously though, feel better soon everyone! :getwell:
|
thanks :) just an update... i am 'sick' and the doc cannot figure out why... so i am going on 'super' benadryl and had to buy and epi-pen just in case but it could also be something wrong with my kidneys (which would explain more than 3kg weight increase in just a couple days!!! i am soooo swollen it is physcially very painful!)
so... all that to say, this is the first time i have missed exercising (doc said not to until blood test results came back) in 18 months...yes you heard me, i have not missed a day in 18 months and now i have to miss a few days for sure... maybe even a full week... i am FREAKING OUT!!!! am soooo scared i'll pack on the pounds... hoping it is nothing seriously wrong but man i am scared... and i dont have a significant other to share this with so you ladies are getting a blast! thanks for letting me rant!!! |
Good heavens, Kim, you're dealing with a lot! Don't worry a bit about weight gain -- so long as your eating is on track, you'll be fine. Really! Quite a few of us here have taken layoffs due to injury or illness and we've all maintained by just sticking to our eating plans. Just beware of comfort eating!
You know, if you haven't taken a day off for 18 months, your body probably NEEDS a rest! This could actually be beneficial for you and you might come back all re-energized! :) |
meg - thank you so much... i am just soooo scared right now... i am probably freaking out over nothing but i am really really freaking out... takes a lot to scare me and i am full on right now...deep breath now... deep breath... no comfort eating... just sleep... :) i can do this... thank you thank you thank you!

Sheila you were in some of my very favorite places! We have close friends who live in Trinidad, just N of Eureka and we love to spend time there. Anywhere along the OR coast is great. I'm going with some GFs in mid-October. We're rented a house at Canon Beach - I can't wait! Hope everyone is feeling better soon! |
Ok. For all the times I should have had my camera ready, this time was one for sure. My dog Chico (avatar dog) is really interesting. He is quite polite--in a dog way. And he keeps us entertained. He has a few toys that we throw or kick for him and his favorite is to do this when we're in the kitchen. Inevitably the toy sometimes ends up on the kitchen counter (or on the pool table in the dining room). He's very polite and he'll put his front paws on the counter and get his toy (if it's within reach). He WILL NOT take food off the counter (and no, I did not teach him this, he figured it on his own). I've even tested him--a Milk Bone dog treat and his toy on the counter--he'll take the toy and sit and wait for the milk bone. A few months back we realized that if the toy ends up on the pool table he'll actually get all the way up on the table to get his toy. No big deal. Today his toy was on the kitchen island and he couldn't quite reach it. I was too lazy to get up and get it for him. He kept trying and trying. Suddenly he was on the island! He took his toy without upsetting the vase or moving the video that was sitting up there. But he slipped on the way down (I guess that granite is a bit slippery). It was hilarious! What am I going to do?
For everyone who is under the weather or having a bad day, I hope that story cheered you up a bit. (Next time we have our camera out, we'll get a movie of him getting on the pool table--which is a lot lower than the kitchen counter!). |
i can sooo picture that dog on the island :) i had an airedale terrier that liked to climb onto a rocking ottoman - was hilarious to watch him teeter and wobble :) that same dog also ate my linoleum floor...yes, ate it! when i called insurance, they just laughed and laughed until he agreed that my policy didn't preclude "the dog ate my floor" so we got a whole new floor! ha ha ha
|
Oh, I had a Golden Retriever who ate doors, screens and carpet (brand new!), so I understand a terrier eating linoleum!!! Good thing your insurance covered it!
|
Hugs to you Kim. I sure hope you feel better soon! When did the doctor think you might get some answers?
|
Allison, wow on the PT costs. Wise decision to find a PT that accepts your insurance. My PT co-pays are $15. Even that’s spendy 3X week. Thank Chico for the smile on my face. My dogs would take the food and the toy. And Kim, I love the dog ate my floor. Dogs are so uplifting.
Jessica, at least you’re working out in all three areas of the triathlon. Researching a good program is probably safer in the long run. BTW, I’m not sick but ate so off plan today, I might as well be. I’m thinking you’re safe and won’t catch the physical yuckies. MsP, I hope you’re starting to feel better. Pat, having spent time in Bend, I can see them displaying quilts in the downtown area and it looking so right. And wow, on the mountain quilt for the ad. They are works of art. Perhaps my DH would be willing to go… I’d love seeing it. I hope you feel better. Be careful with exercise now that the cold has migrated to your chest. Michele, good luck on your quest to 123. Great job pre-planning your lunch adventure. Kim, I hope the swelling goes down quickly. That’s so uncomfortable. And the break from exercise. Until my PS in February, I could count on my fingers and toes how many days I didn’t exercise in 5 years. It was so rare that I was freaking out in panic. I made DH promise to strap me to my elliptical if I didn’t get back on post-surgery. Heck, I missed it so much that I didn’t need any urging. You won’t pack on the pounds and you will resume when it is SAFE for you to do so. Shannon, you win. That was one crappy Monday you had. Hope Tuesday was better. Iris, wise choice on leaving the room. Low budget horror movie sounds like torture. If you’re not feel well, it sounds even worse. Rabbit, most get crappy Monday, mine is (and usually is) crappy Tuesday. I’m terribly thankful I get to go to bed in a couple hours and be done with the day. Dagmar, my DH works swings so I rarely see him during the week. Thus the TV isn’t on. But when he’s home, spending time “together” normally means watching a TV show. Last night he was here and we’re trying to decide what to do. I said we could watch a TV show since clearly we don’t know how to do anything else together. Wow that was a big silence getter. But my point was made. We played non-competitive Scrabble and had fun. And we chatted. Keep working on your hubby. The TV just ain’t worth it. And heck Dagmar, I’ll buy your resistance bands and ship them to you. Or did you try ebay? Duct tape could be dangerous if it gives at an inopportune time. Sheila, I’m glad your trip was great. I love Brookings. It is gorgeous. Wow, I was spiraling in my kitchen (read that as grazing while full) and decided to sit with my computer and see if I could break the cycle. So chickies, THANK YOU!!!! I have no desire for anymore food and my kitchen is closed for the night. 200 extra cals in chocolate was stopped before it became 800 cals. Marie |
Hi all,
Get well soon to all chickies that are feeling under the water! Marie - I realise now that most of my crankiness is TOM, which leaves me irritated and headachy, coupled with still a lot of anger towards XH. Sigh, it is 4.5 yrs since he went out of the house but I keep having issues about DS and DD and I find it hard to leave it behind me at times. Kim - yuck on the allergies. I hope the meds are working. When do you get your test results? And you're surely not going to gain all back in a week. Like Meg said...after 18 months of exercise your body is probabely due for a rest week. And you are a different person nnow from when you started...so used to exercise that you will pick it up again. Happy hump day all of you, Rabbit |
I'm still sick, though I had more energy today, and actually got my flower beds cleaned out and some annuals planted in pots/baskets so it looks springlike around here! :)
|
Mail order mayhem
This week is just not my week for mail order . In addition to not getting the resistance bands I want (I did find one at a store near me so I'm not going to accidentally kill myself) I now have a pair of really cute sandals in "my" size that actually are about a size too big, two pairs of "curvy fit" pants that don't fit at all, and two pairs of Bermuda shorts ditto :?:.
Back everything goes. At least most of the companies I deal with will refund me the cost of the items and shipping. Except the shoe company. I have to pay for return shipping and eat the cost of duty and taxes :(. SIGH. Did I mention I want to be an American :p ? You guys can shop 'til you drop from your computers and you have such a selection it's amazing! Not in Canada. Our whole retail industry just blows. Dagmar :( |
well i am 90% sure it is not an allergic reaction because the stronger-than-benadryl drugs did nothing last night to help... so now i am thinking kidney infection? not sure.... hopefully my stat blood work will be back in early morning today. i decided to go to work instead of sit at home and eat/worry...so here i sit at work, it is even hard to type i am so swollen... yuck... thank you for the encouragement ladies... i am feeling more settled about the exercise thing today because it is so true - my body probably could use a couple days off and it feels like it went 10 rounds with Rocky i am so sore today anyways...
i'll keep you posted on what, if anything, the doc figures out.... medicine is an art, not a science! :) i hope everyone enjoys their hump day... hump or no hump... ha ha ha |
