My mantra is in my signature:

"Those who argue for their limitations get to keep them".

For me, this means that:
No excuses, no pre-conceived notions about weight loss. If I think that my medical issues prevent me from losing weight, guess what! I won't lose weight. If I think that my genetics prevents me from losing weight, guess what? I won't lose weight. I may have to work harder, but it IS possible.
If I think that I can't resist food X, then guess what? I won't resist it.
If I think that I can't go to an office party and resist the donuts, guess what? I'll eat donuts.
And if I defend my pre-conceived notions to the DEATH, guess what? I'll never grow as a person.

If I think something is NOT possible, it WON'T be possible.

Not trying to hijack your thread kitty, but trying to remember a saying from one of our discussions on here that I want to put on my fridge and was hoping someone would remember where it originated... it was something about not throwing yourself down the stairs when you miss a step? or something like that? Anyone remember?

I like that one too. It is (I think) "if you stumble on a step you don't throw yourself down the whole staircase (or something....)"

So here's something neat-- I actually wrote down the above statement (of robin's) and had it in my pocket when I left work. It just rings so loud and clear to me regarding both professional and personal goals.

I took the subway with one of our secretaries who was talking to me about her professional goals. She then continued and spoke of how difficult her upcoming year would be if she moved forward with her plan to become a respiratory therapist. I simply reached into my pocket and handed her the scrap of paper. She read and looked up in amazement and clarity. I let her keep it

I LOVE this thread! I just added a bunch to my planner and my stickies program on my laptop..

I have a few quotes that I like to apply to all aspects..

"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."

^ I love reading this quote when I feel discouraged or my progress stalls.

"If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price."

^ Again, when I get upset about my weight and bring myself down.. reminds me that I have control over how I make myself feel and if I beat myself up, then how can I demand the world to treat me better?

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."

"Self-trust is the first secret of success. So believe in and trust yourself."

I remember reading that a lot around here, but I don't know who originally coined the phrase. I always looked at it in a different light than others. Of course we wouldn't throw ourselves down the stairs that would be silly, but if we stumbled on that first step more than once, wouldn't we use extreme caution when using that stair case in the future? LOL I think if I stumbled more than once I would put up a caution sign, add an extra hand rail...or avoid it all together!

Jayell uses the expression, I believe, something to the affect of:

"If you trip on a stair do you then throw yourself down the entire staircase?"

And

"If discover you've got a flat tire, do you proceed to slash the other three?"

Or something like that.

I use mantras or self- talk to get me out of lots of situations. They've changed for me since my journey began and will periodically do so, I'm certain.

In the very beginning it was "I just don't do that anymore". Then there was no "BLT'S" (bites, licks and tastes).

Then there's these questions I sometimes ask myself:

-Do I really need this? Can I live without it?
-Is this going to get me closer to my goals – or further?
-How will I feel after I eat it?
-Why is it more important for me to eat it, then to lose the weight?
-Is it really worth it?

And:

"I can do without this. I can do without this. I don't need it."

"What is it I want the MOST - the food - or the weight loss?"

"The feeling will pass."

"Get out of the kitchen. Get out of the kitchen."

"What the heck are you doing?"

Right now I've been finding nibbling a big problem, even though it's all healthy stuff. So my new thing is to never eat while standing. I was doing much better at it last week. I've got to get back to it. (You hear that self?) I let the door open a little bit by justifyiing it - like it's going to wind up in my salad anyway. But for me, once I justify it "this time", I end up justifying it "that time" too.

And kittycat40, I adore my new signature. ADORE it. That sums up a lot of things for me.
