Need opinions...

1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to post a picture of myself in my workout clothes on here...and I want HONEST opinions on whether I'm too thin. I've been getting more comments than normal about how I've "lost too much," and worry that maybe the see something I don't....

It's crazy, but I feel I can trust all of your opinions over those of people here, simply BECAUSE I haven't met you. None of you hold grudges against me (I hope!), you have no reason to sugarcoat the truth, and most of all you all understand what it takes to get here.

This is seriously worrying me...please let me know!

wannabealewis 02-12-2009 03:15 PM

I think you look great, I wish I looked like you>

Beautiful Ace 02-12-2009 03:18 PM

Well.... I don't know about health wise etc. But I do prefer women with a little more meat on their bones:) It really could be just your structure though, some people are just built to look thinner than others. I would honestly go with how much your ribs and backbones protrude(but I can't see those:P). Usually when I see that I think "way too thin".

My oppinion is biased I guess because I like women, and everyone (yes EVERYONE) has preferences when they look at a woman or man.... I duno.. I hope my opinion isn't stupid or offensive.

MindiV 02-12-2009 03:21 PM

Thanks, y'all! I think most people see my collarbones and how much thinner my face is...My sister is particularly concerned with how thin I am. Then again, she's struggling to lose weight so her opinion could go either way....

I'll have to pay attention to the ribs and backbones, and see what's protruding (or not) there....

I just hope I don't "look sick," as more than one person has said recently....

Beautiful Ace 02-12-2009 03:23 PM

Oh and P.S. your arms look very healthy and not too thin.. so yeh:P Just thought I would mention that.

Rosinante 02-12-2009 03:29 PM

I think you look good, your arms look toned, not scraggy, but I wouldn't lose any more.
TBH, I think the tickers that say 'X lbs past your goal, congratulations' are wrong, it is all too easy for any of to get into the mindset that keeping losing is a good thing.

Just one thing, and I feel crddy mentioning it but you asked - I think having your hair very short, as well as being a lot thinner than people knew you as can make you look ill to them.

When I lost my 100+lbs a few years ago, I went for a very short haircut, something I'd always wanted. In my mirror, I looked sleek and hot. One CW asked if I'd been having chemo-therapy.....

Congratulations on your great body!

Shannon in ATL 02-12-2009 03:38 PM

Looking at your arms, face & neck and the shape of your top I don't think you are too thin. Your arms look great, I'm jealous. How do your ribs and hip bones look? I always use those as my gauge - when I got to 116 the bottom of my ribs and the top of my pelvic bone stuck out badly so I gained a little back. Looking at the rest of you I would guess that they look normal, not too thin.

What I have noticed with myself is that people see my more slender face and that is all they remember from before and they hit me with the 'bonestick' comments I get sometimes. They don't really remember what normal looking is.

Don't worry - you look great. But I will agree that you probably don't want to lose anymore. As I don't. :)

Ailidh...I've just got my hair pulled back...which I do quite often. Hmmm...maybe that's what has people worried? Like you mentioned, it could be making me look thinner...

Thanks!!

Shannon - My original goal WAS 160, but my body got into a pattern of holding at one weight for three weeks, then I'd lose a TON of weight during my TOM. That happened the last several months of my weight loss, so it was hard for me to find a good center between eating and exercising to start maintenance. It cost me 20 more pounds, so I'm 140 now...have been for many months...

FB 02-12-2009 03:48 PM

You look wonderful. That's perfectly horrendous for someone to say you look sick, whatever. I would also agree that you're at a point where you needn't lose any more weight, you're looking good. :)

More comments lately than normal but weight is the same? I find I get more comments on my weight when I'm wearing newer and more flattering clothes. Could it be as simple as that? Are you sporting new threads?

FB 02-12-2009 03:55 PM

Wanted to add that being so slender can appear to be too skinny to some. As Beautiful Ace said, it would all be a matter of taste. You look... willowy to me - I mean that in a good way. I don't think anyone would classify your dancer's like shape as super curvy or voluptuous (nor do I think you could be mistaken for suffering from being scary thin) - at this point it may just be boiling down to people's tastes.

These days (with so many classifying as overweight) your slender shape does not classify as the norm, you know? That's not a bad thing.

ETA: Gosh, I hope I worded this alright and flattering as it was meant to be. I feel like commenting on someone's body is a potential minefield for hurt.

heather88 02-12-2009 03:59 PM

I think that you look great! You look small, but not sick!

I feel you on that one! I was worried mine might come across as rude or hurtful also. I didn't read your post as anything but flattering btw:) And honest, which I'm sure she appreciates since that's what everyone deserves.

corazonas 02-12-2009 04:06 PM

i don't think you are too thin... i'm thinking maybe the people around you were used to you being 80lbs heavier. that's a LOT to lose! so it might shock them that you are doing so well and pretty much dropped a 9yo from your body but in no way does that make you too thin. you just look different now and maybe they're not used to it... you look fantastic!

recidivist 02-12-2009 04:41 PM

Have you checked your body fat lately? It depends a lot on your lean muscle mass, your body fat, and your bone structure. You don't want to be burning muscle because there is no fat left to burn. I don't see a skeletal frame sticking out...you look very healthy to me, but it's hard to tell when your torso is covered.

MindiV 02-12-2009 04:42 PM

Thanks, y'all! No offense taken to ANYTHING you have said...no worries!!

It's pretty crazy...when I was bigger, I was telling myself that I had "big bones." Turns out I didn't. Thinking back, I was always a pretty small kid, until puberty hit at the same time we moved from one town to another. I quit all activities and started eating. So maybe it's just that my body LIKES this weight, after all...

But thanks for all your comments!

MindiV 02-12-2009 04:43 PM

recidivist - how does one go about checking body fat?

bargoo 02-12-2009 04:44 PM

If you are 140 now you are right in the middle of a healthy weight range for your height. I don't think you need to lose another pound. You look great now. P.S. I would kill to have your upper arms .

Shannon in ATL 02-12-2009 04:47 PM

Mindi - I want your hair!

I've had a hard time with the maintenance balance myself -kept losing for ten pounds past goal and had to work really hard to stop it. I remember your post about still losing and asking about maintaining on 2000 calories with a small amount of exercise, so I knew you were having a tough time with the balance, too.

I'll post a pic of me in workout clothes later for the same honest opinion - oddly, a coworker just asked me if I was sick and that was why I was losing weight. And I just added 2.5 pounds of artificial boob weight. :)

recidivist 02-12-2009 04:59 PM

I have never done the body fat measurements, so I don't really know how to do it, but I'm sure there is a lot of info on the internets.

rockinrobin 02-12-2009 05:02 PM

I personally think you look great. But I would ask YOU, how do YOU think you look? And more importnatly, how do YOU feel? Because your opinion is the one that really counts and really matters.

I get comments all the time. I basically tune them out and do what I think is best for myself. Because no one knows *me*, better them ME.

mandalinn82 02-12-2009 05:30 PM

Mindi - IMO, the only people who have any right to talk about you being "too thin" are you and your doctor. If you're happy, and your doctor is happy, I'd say just that to the naysayers - "Interesting thought. My doctor and I are pretty happy with my weight goals, but I'll consider it".

JayEll 02-12-2009 06:29 PM

What they said! ^^^

You look great. Your weight is incorrect on the left of your posts--I would say at 140, you are just right given your height! If I were at 140, I'd be pleased as punch! (And I'm shorter.)

Jay

kaplods 02-12-2009 06:52 PM

If you are concerned, I'd say (much as mandalinn has already said) ask your doctor at your next check-up. He or she would have a lot more valid input than any of us.

Kery 02-13-2009 08:29 AM

I think you look great as you are. Maybe you're getting comments because other people aren't used yet to seeing you at this weight?

And as others have said, if your doctor is not worried about it, then it's probably a good sign that things are okay.

This is supposed to be the formula the US Navy uses.

I think you look fine, and eventually, as people update their mental picture of what you're "supposed" to look like in their head, the comments will stop.

MindiV 02-13-2009 08:39 AM

Thanks, y'all!

I think I look ok...I'd rather have more in the boob department, but other than that I'm happy. No ribs or backbone showing (had to check last night!)....

bargoo 02-13-2009 09:24 AM

I don't know why it is, but people just seem to be compelled to make comments to a successful dieter. I try to get to another subject as quickly as possible so I don't have to hear it.

Glory87 02-13-2009 10:59 AM

I get the "too thin" stuff too sometimes, which frustrates me. I'm such a pear, my top half is pretty thin (thin face, very prominent collar bones, I can see my ribs when I stretch up), but I still have a belly, hips and big thighs. I have a hard time getting my bottom half to look okay without emaciating my upper half.

I think you look lovely and I am very jealous of your slender hips :)

Mrs Snark 02-13-2009 11:27 AM

In my opinion, you look fabulous. If I saw you on the street I would simply think you are an attractive, fit woman. I would never think "too thin".

Great job, you should be proud of your hard work and enjoy the benefits!

ddc 02-13-2009 11:47 AM

Have you bought new clothes for your new size?

Maybe if your clothes are "hanging" on you, and loose, it could make you appear more skinny.

JuliaDH 02-13-2009 12:04 PM

I was thinking the same thing as ddc. Maybe you need some workout clothes with more structure and defination! But your second pic with you hair down looks fab!

maryblu 02-13-2009 06:07 PM

I so love giving mho.....thanks for asking, MindiV! ;)

1st. You look maaahhhhvelous, dahling.

2nd, I am seriously envious of your upper arms AND your hair. I could not get anything looking close to either of those attributes without some serious intervention.

3rd, and please, please, this is an oversimplification and a generalization from magazines which still tend for the most part to stress women being on the thin side. The rule of thumb that is simple to use as a little point of reference is that you should weight 100#s for the first 5 feet, and then 5#s for each additional inch. Again, I stress, just one generalization. At 5'8.5", that would make your "ideal" weight ~142.5#s. I know that for me, at 5'7.5", when I weighted 138#s, it was pretty ideal. When people told me I was too thin, I took it with a grain of salt because after an 80# loss, it was a pretty big change.

I can so relate to the "big boned" notion. I always thought I was too, and because I carried alot of wt. in my arms and shoulders and kinda straight up and down, people always said that too. After losing the wt. I realized I was medium, perhaps even small boned. Who knew? I don't think it matters much. What counts is health and fitness, and you obviously have that figured out.

Congratulations on great success and best wishes for your continued healthy journey.

CountingDown 02-14-2009 03:57 PM

Mindy - you look great! Ignore those folk that say otherwise.

I've had similar comments and brush them off saying, "Thanks for your concern. But I'm right where my doctor thinks I should be." That stops the conversation - dead.

If I'm feeling a tad mean (which isn't often), I will then prattle on about how nice it is to find clothing in my size on the sale rack

BlueToBlue 02-14-2009 10:23 PM

I think you look fabulous! :cb: :broc: You actually look quite healthy to me; I can't imagine that people think you look sick. Your arms look great--toned and strong, not sickly at all.

I don't think I've ever had anyone tell me that I'm too thin, but I've heard people say it about others. Personally, IMHO, it seems to me that the people that make these "too thin" comments are often people that are overweight themselves. I think it's a way of trying to reassure themselves that they aren't as overweight as they fear.

Another thing you might tell people when they make comments like this is that you right in the middle of what is considered a healthy BMI for your height.

alinnell 02-16-2009 01:05 PM

Mindi~I think you look great! We're basically the same height (I'm 5'8") and I REALLY feel good at about 140 and it is (was) easy for me to maintain that (I stayed for a couple of years and really need to get back there). At one point I was down to 128 and everyone then said I was too skinny (and I couldn't maintain it at all).

choirgirlhotel 02-16-2009 01:31 PM

You look slim, but it looks like that it just your body type.

You don't look like those celebrities with bobble heads that are starving themselves.

you look normal and healthy and slim.

~Choirgirl~

Bluebird 02-17-2009 04:48 PM

How do you feel? Do you eat healthfully? Do you eat enough? I think those are more important things to consider than what size you are.

People are healthy at different sizes, some larger and some smaller. I have been both too heavy and too thin, and I knew when I was too thin that I was not eating enough or taking care of myself. Listen to YOURSELF and your body; don't go by what anyone else says. :)

MindiV 02-18-2009 09:08 AM

I feel like I eat TOO much, bluebird....but I'm holding steady so I think it's ok... :)

annie175 02-18-2009 10:22 AM

You look marvelous. I wouldn't lose any more than that. I get the same thing.

fiberlover 02-18-2009 11:19 AM

I think you look good. Your hips are very slender, and you are tall - so you have a 'willowy' appearance, which is probably what people are commenting on in the wrong way.
I wouldn't lose any more weight, though.
