A different kind of frustration

[vent]

Ok, I live in SoCal. I can buy magazines from Los Angeles, Palm Springs (obviously), Florida, Hawaii, Colorado, the Midwest, even Mexico. But not San Diego? Come on, we're just as far from LA as we are from SD!!! I have spent the last hour and a half driving from this store to that store in search of a lousy magazine and I can't get it here.

[\vent]

Otherwise my day has been great! DS is going to El Cajon for the weekend (unfortunately he won't be able to do any magazine shopping for me) for a robotics workshop and DD is coming home for the weekend (although she's been sick--hope we don't catch it).

WaterRat 01-15-2009 06:26 PM

Hi - a busy day here. I had 5 interviews set up to hire a PT employee for the city's ice arena (which is in my dept) and would you believe it - the first two people never showed up! Never called, nothing. Leaves the HR gal, the Ice Arena Manager and the Dept Director (me) sitting around for an hour - what a waste of $$$. Grrrrr. Anyway the other 3 did show up, and while any of them could have done the job, one stood out as fitting in with the current staff the best, so we hired him, subject to reference checks, etc.

It's nice to be warmer than most of you today! :) It was 30 when I got up this morning, and is in the low 40's now. (Yes, that's 40 above!) What a weird weather pattern. Much of our snow is gone, but in places things are still very icy. All the main roads are clear, but subdivisions/side roads are not. No school for the second day in a row - the buses cannot navigate on the narrower, icy secondary roads. Snow they do okay, but not ice.....

Lucky you! My cat will sit on my lap during the day (not that I sit that much during the day), but after my DH comes home, the cat totally ignores me. Even when DH doesn't want her on his lap, she still won't sit on me--and I really want her to because she's big, fluffy and warm.

Pat, that's strange that the two people didn't show up for interviews. With the economy the way it is, you'd think everyone would be on their best behavior. Low's in the 40s--yeah! We've got a horrible inversion going on and it's keeping all the cold air down. The higher you go, the warmer it is. I need to go to the ski area just to warm up.

Shannon, hope you make it to the gym tomorrow. Sounds like you're very motivated. I know that if I don't do it in the morning it won't get done, no matter how many times I tell myself I will do it later.

So I had an eye doctor appt. at 1:40 today, and I finally got out of there at 6:10 pm. I've had some eye issues for weeks now, and my vision in my left eye suddenly got really bad this week (the eye doc said legally blind in that eye). After numerous tests that were normal, it appears I'll have an MRI tomorrow, which is the worst test of all. I'm claustrophobic and also have a hard time keeping my head still so it's a double whammy. I will be loading up on drugs before I go with the hope that I can get through it without a meltdown. Through all the tests and grim scenarios, I was thinking a lot about chocolate and cake and other goodies, but I managed to make it home to have a bowl of roasted cauliflower soup and a banana.

Anyway, think good thoughts for me tomorrow!

traveling michele 01-15-2009 11:05 PM

Sheila-- I'll be thinking good thoughts for you tomorrow.

I will be having testing tomorrow as well. Hopefully the last test for awhile. They are still looking at my liver, kidneys, etc. and I am having a cat scan with and without contrast. I will be very cranky tomorrow as I have to fast and drink tons of water before I go. My appointment isn't until 11 am so I will be quite hungry by the time I'm done! I hope the results are good. I get so anxious about these things especially when I read the order and see all of the things they are trying to rule out....

Pat-- I am also surprised you had no shows for interviews- wow!

bargoo 01-15-2009 11:25 PM

Michelle good luck on your cat scan tomorrow. I am in the same boat only farther back. I am having PET scan tomorrow after a six hour fast and my appointment is at 3PM . What was I thinking to agree to an appointment so late in the day?

traveling michele 01-16-2009 01:38 AM

Bargoo-- I'll be thinking about you tomorrow too. Tomorrow must be medical day. Hopefully everyone's results are good!

My kitty is typing with me. He is so happy I finally came upstairs (kitties live upstairs because they hate the dogs) that he is purring and biting (love nibbles). What a goof!!

4rabbit 01-16-2009 05:39 AM

Sheila,
I'm thinking of you & sending good vibes.
I hope all goes well with your medical. the eye conditions sounds scary.

:goodvibes to everyone who has scary medical tests today.

 too!

Dagmar :brr:

Meg 01-16-2009 08:04 AM

Big  for Sheila, Michele, and Bargoo! And Sheila, :bravo: on facing down the chocolate monster. :crossed: that everyone gets happy results from their tests.

It was -4 driving up to the gym at 5:30 am. I must be !

WardHog 01-16-2009 08:24 AM

I hope you all get good test results.

It's 12 degrees here this morning, wind chill of 1. I am sorely tempted to do an at home workout today, but I am trying to motivate myself to get to the gym. I'll go stir crazy unless I get out for a bit.

Ok, get off the computer and GO!

midwife 01-16-2009 08:40 AM

Good luck with the tests today. I sure hope everything comes back okay.

Megan1982 01-16-2009 09:09 AM

Hi everyone,

It's been a very busy week for me but I'm finally getting a chance to sit down at my desk and catch up on some things today (yes...so I hop onto 3fc to catch up! I'm doing real work too I swear!). Food has been POP and actually I've eaten a bit less than I normally do (which is what I need to do anyway to get these stubborn few pounds off) b/c I've actually been too busy to eat. I've been getting to the gym but a few workouts have been shorter than normal due to other commitments, but at least I've been getting there.

My co-workers decided that since we're all back in the office today we should have waffle day. I do love waffles, but passed them up - not worth it right now in my life! The smell wafting down the hall is hard to deal with, though.

It's very cold for Florida, right Shane? :brr: My house is once again like a jungle since all of my plants are inside, have to crack the faucets at night to prevent pipes from freezing, etc. Meg, you're definitely bonkers for going to the gym so early in such cold! (I say that with the utmost respect and admiration for your drive!) Pat, funny that you're warmer than most of the country for once. ;)

Sheila & Michele, hope all comes back normal for your tests.

Allison, if it makes you feel any better I live in a place where you can't get the NY Times or USA today. I subscribe to Oxygen mag but can only pick up my special issues when I go to the city, certainly can't find them here! I hear you, it's very frustrating! You should call a friend who lives somewhere that gets the mag you're looking for and just have them mail it to you!

I'm really looking forward to having a 3 day weekend right now. I can't wait to catch up on some sleep! I'm going to make a big pot of chili this weekend for the cold weather. Off to do that "real work" now. Have a great day everyone!

Shannon in ATL 01-16-2009 09:46 AM

Good morning, everyone -
Sheila, Michele, Bargoo - Hope the tests go well today!

Meg - Driving to the gym in -4? That might be considered insane!

WardHog - it is only 15 where I am, not 12... Woo hoo! Crazy cold in my garage when I was trying to exercise this morning... I don't think there is any way I would have made it to a gym...

Pat - I work in HR and I've had a lot of people no-show for interviews, too. I look at the current economic climate and I just don't understand why someone would no-show for an interview right now. Not only does it mean that they won't get this job today, it also means that they won't get an interview with any of my locations ever again. (Unless they have a darn good reason, and even then, maybe not.)

Megan - I wish we were off Monday... :(

I did get up and work out a little this morning. Insanely cold in my garage, which is where my Weider is. I did barely enough to justify getting up so early in my head, but at least I got up. That is better than the rest of this week! I'm still determined to run this afternoon, but as I look at the predicted 36 degree temperature that determination wanes... We'll see what happens...

I think I'm starting to get nervous about the surgery next week and am letting those nerves ball up other areas of my life. I worked myself into an anxiety fit yesterday afternoon over fairly routine errands. That isn't really like me. I've got to slow down and not let the next several days fall apart - I don't want to go into the surgery on a downturn.

alinnell 01-16-2009 09:46 AM

Good morning everyone!

I wrote to the subscription manager for the magazine and he provided me with a list of places here that carry it. Wouldn't you know it? The grocery store I do most of my shopping at (Vons) was the only store I didn't check and yet they are the chain that carries it! I had DH stop on his way home and he bought several copies.

Good luck to everyone who has medical tests today.

NightengaleShane 01-16-2009 09:51 AM

Good morning! :coffee: WAIT, scratch that, I can't drink coffee or energy drinks until after Monday. I'm dyin' here and feel insanely GROUCHY today. On top of that, the scale went up 1-2 pounds which is highly aggitating because I have been eating perfectly on plan AND less than I normally do since my friggin' wisdom teeth got pulled. Oh well, maybe I am just retaining water as a side effect to all the meds they gave me. I am thankful it is Friday for some people, but it isn't Friday for me; tomorrow, I have to be at work again (probably Sunday, too ) and then I am helping the EX move her stuff out of my place once and for all. :D Now, THAT last part is EXCITING!

YES, Megan, it is insanely COLD for Florida and has been all week! Constant temperatures in the 20s and 30s are just NOT NORMAL for this area! I had to put blankets over the pipes last night at one of my job's residential projects because we didn't want the new sprinkler system freezing over.
Good job on passing up waffle day. That must have been difficult. You are right, though... those are just a bunch of empty calories and you do not need 'em!

Michele, Bargoo, and Sheila, I am crossing my fingers for all of you! How peculiar is it that three people have medical testing all around the same time? I hope the results are favorable and that nothing scary or unexpected occurs! :) And Michele, medical tests make me anxious, too! I think they have that sort of outcome for most people. ;)

WardHog, I love your new avatar picture! It is so pretty! :)

Pat - dang, no-shows for a city-based hiring process? That IS somewhat surprising, but I guess no-shows can happen anywhere. I am almost jealous of your low 40's weather... funny how it can be warmer in ALASKA than it is in FLORIDA right now

Shannon - good luck on your surgery next week. It is completely understandable that you would be experiencing anxiety over it.
It is really hard to get motivated to work out when your workout equipment is outside and it's cold, too. All my weight training stuff is outdoors on my screened-in porch and while I can put space heaters out there, I am already tired and unmotivated in the morning. All my cardio/electronic equipment is inside, though, but that stuff is just as much for my clients as it is for me and I would prefer to do more weight training.
