Welcome back Meg
I'm still kinda new (think I joined the week you were off having your surgery) so you and I haven't really "chatted".
You sound like you have a plan in place to recover as quickly and as well as possible. You won't need those "poor me" foods as you're optimistic and on plan! I admire your attitude and wish you a speedy recovery from such a major trauma to your body. My only news is that I went for a jog yesterday morning - first time in 20 years - and jogged 3 consecutive K and then did the other 3K in intervals. I have a slightly sore knee today but everything else is fine. Switching around my exercise and my food plan are the ways I'm going to cope with maintenance being permanent. Dagmar |
 Hi Dagmar! It's a pleasure to meet you and :high: on the jogging!
|
Wow Meg, so you've been pretty busy the last 10 days or so, huh? ;) What an ordeal! It sounds harrowing. I'm not sure if I could get through all of that. But if anyone can, it's most definitely you. And of course as usual - with SUCH grace. What a trooper. May you continue to recover swiftly and with ease.
Mudpide, great going on the jogging. You must feel marvelous with yourself. :carrot: I hurt my knee very badly yesterday. I was at the beach (yes, I've become a beach bum) and was taken down by a wave. The water was incredibly rough. I didn't go down well and now I can barely straighten it. Hopefully this will pass soon. Oh, but the most gorgeous lifeguard came to assist me. I mean GORGEOUS. Like he could have been on one of those teen-type TV shows. There will be no resting it. My oldest DD is headed back up to college tomorrow. Lots and lots to get done today. I hope everyone has a great week. :smug: |
Meg, thanks for sharing your ordeal. It sure sounds very painful to me. It seems you are doing very well and we are thankful for that. I can sure relate to the upper body strength needed to use a walker. I definitely remember all the time I've spent on crutches and how hard it was.
Robin, hope your knee is better soon and what luck getting a gorgeous lifeguard. (The last time Lacy had tests done at the hospital, her radiologist was fabulous looking). It even made the Upper GI testing easier for both of us. LOL. I've been having some pain issues myself. Terrible pain in the bones on the top of my feet. I don't know why. I haven't injured myself. I'm thinking maybe it's all the golf I've been playing (and the extra walking trying to find my ball). My house sure seems quiet now that that the grandsons have gone home. Only 4 weeks now til my son comes in from Iraq to visit. I'm counting down the days. My car still has a flat tire and I'll be glad when DH gets home tomorrow and can change it. Getting in and out of Shane's jeep is exercise in itself. LOL. I wanted to change the tire myself but was afraid that I wouldn't get the spare on tight enough. DH convinced me to just leave it alone and let him fix it. After all, that is what husbands are for! I am getting a lot of strange looks though driving a souped up jeep with huge tires and fog lights all across the top. LOL. Funny story though, when SD borrowed this Jeep she had to give her mom a ride in it. The mom is short and round. SD had to pull the Jeep into the ditch so her mom could climb into it. LOL, at least I can hop up there. LOL. Of course, 90 lbs. ago I would have had to have a crane lift me into it. |
Meg, you even look great standing there with a walker! I'm not surprised you wowed them with your upper body strength. You are one determined lady, and you'll have those new knees whipped into shape easily. Sounds like you'll be too busy with your physical therapy and upper body exercises to get into a "poor me" eating state. Wishing you a speedy recovery! I'm really envious of the dense bones. :)
Dagmar, way to go on the jogging! Are you going to make it a routine? Robin, hope your knee feels better. If you've got to be rescued, being rescued by a gorgeous lifeguard is the way to go. :D Lily, those four weeks will fly by! So my weekend was spent painting and working in the yard trying to get it in shipshape because we're moving back to Boise. I'm not giving up my house (and my brand-new kitchen!) here in Oregon, however, because we will be back in nine years (retirement) or before (hopefully!). We'll be renting the house through a property management company. I have no idea what we'll come back to, but I've got to keep telling myself, it's just a house, it's just a house. The whole DH in Idaho/me in Oregon just wasn't working for us so there you go. I'm trying to be positive about the move, but Boise is where I put on the majority of the 100 lbs. I lost. This time will be different. We'll join the Y and make activity and eating well a priority. Plus no more stressful teenagers and their teenage angst living at home. We're empty-nesters and that's a plus. Happy Monday, everyone! We got hit with heavy showers last night. Good for the garden! |
Meg~welcome home and thanks for your story. My MIL needs a knee replacement and will probably be getting it next spring after she's on Medicare. One knee is bone-on-bone like yours. Her younger sister got both her knees done two years ago and is doing marvelously despite being obese and not trying to lose.
Dagmar~way to go on the jogging! Don't let DH drag you down! Michelle~you're ravenous because of lack of sleep. You'll calm down. It will get better. This is really funny, but since my DD left for school last Wednesday, I think we're communicating MORE! We email several times a day and she's called me a few times, too. Usually she spends her time at home holed up in her room on the computer or with her nose in a book. No conversations! Her first day of school is today. Robin~ouch! take care of your knee! Lily~my FIL taught my DD and a bunch of her friends how to change tires, check fluid levels, jump start the car and other things last winter. He made them all change the tire. It was hard, but they all appreciated it. I had an okay weekend. I took the dogs in for shots on Saturday and didn't have time for my morning coffee which (I think) caused me to get a headache mid-morning. Advil didn't work. Tylenol didn't work. Aspirin didn't work. I finally went to bed at 7:30 PM because I was in so much pain. I really didn't want to go to bed that early, thinking I'd wake up at 2 AM and not be able to get back to sleep, but I managed to sleep all the way until 7 AM! And I felt much better Sunday. My abs hurt all weekend due to my trainer really pushing me on Friday, but I'm not complaining about that! I have a great menu for this week and I hope to be finally getting into the losing mode rather than this pseudo maintenance (which is really gaining for me). I have no wine in the house, which is the first obstacle for me to overcome. I'll have some crystal light lemonade while fixing dinner--I need a taste other than water to keep me from munching. |
Welcome home, Meg!! You are so tough with all you have been through. I am proud of your strength---both mental and physical. Pardon me while I kiss my knees now. Take it easy and eat your protein. You definitely need salmon more than ice cream to get healed.
It was a busy weekend for me. We set a record for # of births yesterday. What were people doing 40 weeks ago? Nice job on the running, Dagmar. Ouch on the knee, Robin. Score on the lifeguard though! Good luck with Boise, Sheila. You have the skillz (yes, with a 'z') to keep the weight off. Hi Allison! I can't wait to read your menu! I'm having a small medical issue right now...and I won't go into details but hopefully it can be solved this am and hopefully it won't interfere with my weight lifting, biking, and running plans this week. I have a feeling I'll need to take it easy at least for today though. :( Le sigh. ETA: Yes, I realize it is lame of me to gripe about maybe a day or two off with Meg facing more time than that off. I don't mean to be insensitive..... |
Welcome home Meg!!! The lack of showering after a surgery really does suck, so I hope that you can get your incisions taken care of soon. When I had my wrist surgery getting into the tub with my arm sticking out was okay, but I had to have DH help wash me!
 to all the folks who had kids go off to college the past week! Midwife - LOL about the births! I heard that more babies are conceived during winter months because people are bored and have nothing to do. :lol3: Is it true in your experience? Dagmar - you must be pretty fit to run that far without having run at all lately! I've found then when I stop running my ability to do it declines very rapidly. Robin - sorry about your knee, I hope it gets better soon. I am so jealous of your beach -- my nearest beach is over three hours away and it's on Lake Michigan, not the ocean! A big change from living in Rhode Island. On the other hand, being a beach bum is more fun in LA because you can do it year round. Last time I went home we went to the beach on xmas! Allison - you're probably right about it being a caffeine headache. My DH was a huge coffee drinker back about five or six years ago (think six POTS per day). He went cold turkey on it and basically slept for a week straight, waking up only long enough to eat, during which time he had a constant terrible headache. He's been caffeine-free since then! Sheila - I'm sure you will make Boise work for you this time around. I'm a bit behind since I haven't been on 3FC since Thursday. DH and I took Friday off and went to ride roller coasters all day! We had a great time, and a relaxing weekend after that. My only other news of the weekend was that we rescued a baby mole that had fallen into our basement window well. Actually two fell in, but one of them died. :( After phone tag with about a million people, we finally got the other one captured in a shoebox and brought him to a wildlife rescue. (Now is the time where all of you who use mole poison are thinking I'm loony!) Anyway, I'm glad that Mr. Mole is safe now. He was actually really cute (and FAST!). Of course now since we saw two baby moles, we know that there are more moles somewhere in our yard! It would be great if they ate all the grubs under our lawn, but hopefully they won't do too much damage. Also hopefully they won't emerge inside the fence and get eaten by our dog! He hasn't been able to catch any bunnies yet so I don't think he'd be able to catch a mole either, unless he dug into their tunnels (and he is not a digger). |

Meg! It's wonderful to see you back! You are so brave. I know your surgery had to be done but that doesn't make this experience any easier. I recall last winter when I had both of my medial menisci trimmed and knees scoped how frustrated I felt. (Nothing compared to what you are enduring) But the frustration was something like, :chin: I've worked so hard to remain fit and strong through the injury and up to surgery and now I'm lying flat in this bed watching movies with big bandages on my knees. What the  happened? :dizzy:
It sounds like you have a good plan in place with regard to feeding yourself well. I'm also glad you have a team working with you to help you regain range of motion and prevent scar tissue. This was something I was unaware of until I spoke with a personal trainer a few weeks later. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and plan for recovery. Hopefully I will not need to know first hand what this experience is like but in case I ever do at least my expectations will be a little more realistic and kinder to myself. Oh, and remember, it could be a while before you are able to sit down on a mat to do any floor work and expect to pull yourself back up. I forgot about two weeks after my surgery and had to drop my ego to accept a hand up from another gym member I've never met before. :o Thank goodness he was there :D Heal well Meg! |
Hi everyone,
There is just no excuse for my poor eating last week. I confess. I ate terribly. Then I felt sick for several days too, and tired, stressed with all of the craziness going on in my life, and used that as an excuse not to go to the gym. But it's not. (Not being able to drive to the gym in the tropical storm is the only legitimate excuse I had for missing Saturday's workout only! But I should have done something at home instead.) Yesterday I went to the store and got lots of lovely produce, planned my food & workout week the best I could and prepped food, and am hoping the structure of the work week will help me keep things in check. I also spent Friday and Saturday in the house staring at the rain pouring down outside. It was very windy and dangerous to drive anywhere. I'm glad TS Fay is (mostly - minus residual thunderstorms) gone! Since breastfeeding is a hot topic (hang in there Lisa!), I have a funny story. A friend of my roommates and mine, K, is 30 with her first kid, 4 months. Last month she brought several bags of breastmilk to our house when she came over and accidentally left one in the freezer. Last week when the power was out for several days, one roommate loaded up her freezer food in 2 small coolers, dropped one off at an older friend's (he is 60), and took the other to K's house to spend the night with her (we tried to distribute our fridge/freezer food amongst our friends to not overwhelm anyone's fridge with tons of food). Other RM & I gave her the bag of breastmilk and told her she might as well bring it back to K's. K said "oh, thanks, I work hard for every bag!" Then RM unloaded the cooler in K's fridge to discover she had left the breast milk with our 60-year-old-male friend in her other cooler. Oops. He never said anything about it, but we found it funny. Meg, I'm so glad to hear your doing ok! Sound like you really needed that surgery. I'll bet the medical staff was very impressed by your fitness and strength level. Ice cream and cookies won't make you feel better. Trust me, I tried it last week and they didn't help - they will actually make you feel worse. I'm glad you're back and good luck with rehab! (Not that you need it.) Robin, sure, you "hurt your knee" so the gorgeous lifeguard would have to help you. Suuuuure. JK, I hope it passes quickly. Dagmar, great job jogging! Lily, you should start dressing really crazy when you drive around in the souped-up jeep too. And then take a picture! Sounds funny. Allison, my "pseudo-maintenance" is also sort of gaining at this point. Maybe we can try and get ourselves back to goal together. My problem is most definitely the food aspect, secondary alcohol. We can do it, right? :carrot: Sorry about your headache - sounds painful. Glad it's gone. Sheila, you will definitely stay active when you move! Your lifestyle has changed completely, and you're not the same person you were when you last lived in Boise. When is your move date? midwife, I think holidays make people happy so they... you know... more... also they  more during the holidays. Leads to more :preg: Hi Jessica! Maybe your dog will help keep the moles out of the yard. I'm also sending :hug:s to the parents with kids gone. And :wave:s to our Lisa and Anne with your wee babes! |
Meg, welcome back. Wishing you fast healing! You were missed here, for sure. Love the walker pic, and hope your knees deflate soon. Geez, only 8 pounds with that much swelling...you must be tiny now.
Dagmar, good job on the running. Robin, hope your knee heals quickly, and glad you got at least a little eye candy in the bargain. Lily, hope you are feeling better and that the time passes quickly until Shane gets home. Sheila, I know you'll do great in Boise this time around. Moving sounds stressful. Take care of yourself. Allison, if you were able to sleep that much maybe you were just overtired to begin with. Doesn't sound like caffeine should have THAT much of an effect at only 3 cups a day. Hi midwife! Glad you're busy and hope you're feeling better soon. Jessica, roller coasters and moles. Sounds like quite the weekend. Hi Lydia! Megan, stop "should"ing yourself to death. Sounds like you've got a good plan for the week. Thanks for sharing the breastmilk story. My news: big changes this week. We traded in the small car and got a minivan since we never have room for anything in addition to the kids and their carseats. I got a great deal with the model year end deals--guess what, no one wants to buy a minivan when gas costs so much. We'll just have to deal with that, but I really like it. I got my bicycle into it, with both carseats still installed without even taking off a wheel. DS started day care today. He only spent 3 hrs there as we get him used to the place. He is passed out right now, which meant he was too overstimulated to sleep, but he did really well, and one of the women who took such great care of his sister is still there, and I feel really good about that. But, I miss him so much. :( It is easier the second time around but isn't easy. I swam today! First time in 10 months or so. It is hard starting over, because you remember what you could do, and by comparison it seems so hard. I'm trying to cut myself some slack though. I am still having knee issues so I'm riding more and now that I have child care, I can swim. I start back to work in 3 weeks. Seems like both forever and no time at all. I need to get some new work clothes, since I'm still, ah, a little chunky now. Looking forward to it, as well as dreading it. Can you say mixed feelings? Ah, yes, and DS just almost slept through the night. He got to 30 minutes before my alarm went off. The end of the mindbreaking fatigue is in sight! Happy Monday everyone! Anne |
Anne - glad to hear your DS is almost sleeping through the night! That must be a great relief. That's great that you got a deal on the minivan! My parents had one when I was a kid, but I don't think we ever managed to fit a bike in it without taking off the tire. Actually come to think of it they had a bike rack for it (not that my couch potato family ever biked much!).
Lydia - I am imagining you sprawled out on a gym mat saying "Somebody help me, I can't get up!" It makes me think of that old "I'm fallen and I can't get up" commercial. I have had similar embarrassing moments . . . when my wrists were bad, I had to ask a coworker to open a water bottle for me and felt really dumb, plus a while back I had to ask my coworkers to kill a bug that was in my cubicle for me! Seriously though, not being able to get up is no laughing matter. Megan - Don't beat yourself up over a few days off plan. I can imagine that with TS Fay and the news that your gym was closing that would be pretty stressful, in addition to whatever other stress you may be having. I know you will do better this week! In an effort to force myself to get some more exercise, I bit the bullet and signed up for aqua aerobics through my local parks department. So now, no excuses, I have to go to my "Aqua Blast" class every Monday in September (except labor day of course). Not a huge commitment, since it's nonrefundable and I don't know if I'll like it, but I am excited about it. If I like it I can register for more classes on a different day in October -- I already registered for intro Spanish classes on Mondays. The other exciting part of taking an aqua aerobics class is that it gives me an excuse to buy a new swimsuit. The only one I have that is not a "fat" swimsuit is my bikini, which I don't think would be appropriate! Speaking of which, why the heck do I still have my fat swimsuits? |

Wow Meg! The strength of your spirit and optimism just flows off the page! Not many people sound so cheerful after a surgery like that! I'm sending you vibes for fast healing!

Hi Chickies!
I haven't been around in awhile...I have that whole...spreading myself too thin thing going on from time to time... But I have some good news to update you all on...DH just finished his 12th cycle of oral Chemo and it may be the last one he has to take! He has to do another MRI in Oct as well as a PET scan but we know it is going to be ok... I am doing well on my Radiant Recovery program...it has been three months now... I have downdosed to 10mg of my medication and am in the process of being tapered off entirely...I will be off within the month!! Yay!!! Not a moment too soon because it really is stalling my weight!!! Argh!! Anyway...I have only had 2 minor binges since I started on program and one gave me a migraine so I think I may have actually learned something!!! I am feeling all sorts of emotional and physical changes and I took action for something I have needed for a long time! I went into a doggie day spa grooming place on Friday and basically talked complete strangers into giving me a chance to work there! (They didn't have a want ad or anything!) I have a working interview tomorrow! I have butterflies!! Basically they are going to work me a regular shift...see if they like me and I like them and go from there! Yay!! I haven't worked outside of the house (I did some data entry for a few months!) in over 16 years! The only bad thing is it will completely nix my yoga & pilates class at the Y, I will have to practice at home or go to my teachers house when she gets back from her trip to India. I will work it out though... Love all you guys even though I am not around much...you are all an inspiration to me! Raven |
Welcome back Meg!
You do sound like you're doing great and you look fantastic (except the swollen knees--ow!). You have a fantastic attitude and I'm sure you'll heal quickly. Paperclippy-- I love water aerobics! Haven't done it in a long time though. I just recently went through my swimsuits and got rid of the fat ones. For some reason, I downsized all of my other clothes, but not the suits. Baby moles sound so cute. If you think that is crazy, I rescued a fledgling crow a few months ago and drove him/her to the animal shelter in rush hour traffic. Anne-- wow! That is great that ds slept so well. I hope he keeps it up. And I bet older ds will go to bed early and sleep well tonight too! Too bad you have to go back to work soon-- that is tough. Robin-- so sorry you hurt your knee. I hope it is a "quick" injury. But I would have loved to have been rescued by the lifeguard! So, my daughter was dropped off at the airport yesterday morning to catch her flight to college (as a freshman). She was going 5 days early to do a community outreach program. She called us when the plane landed and said she was going to get her luggage, seeing if the people were there to meet her, and she would call later. She never called. The rational part of me assumed everything was fine. The irrational part of me worried that she was kidnapped from the airport. We sent her a couple of text messages late last night and heard nothing, so I spent my 3rd night in a row without sleep.:dizzy: Today, we tried calling her and her phone went right to voicemail. We didn't really have a way of getting ahold of her and we were trying not to panic. Finally, after 3 pm, she called. She said they had gone straight from the airport to a homeless shelter and they couldn't have their cell phones there. They spent the night at the shelter (I have no idea what they did, but she said it was very eye-opening) and they had just gotten back to the college when she called. Now I can relax and maybe actually sleep.... I have been ravenous which I am sure is due to the lack of sleep. My weight is up big time (after being at my lowest since I started losing on Saturday morning) as well due to some food slips on the weekend. My younger dd started high school today (so excited!), and the kiddos returned to my school too. Candy and goodies in the staff room plus pizza lunch provided-- I avoided all like a good girl. I also start a class today towards my masters degree so I have to get back in my studying mode. And try not to slip on my gym time-- I will be a busy girl! Hello to everyone else! I hope everyone has a great week! |
Wow, everyone is so chatty this week! It's only Monday and already I can barely keep up.
My eye is coming along but it's still pretty technicolor. And the spot where I actually hit my head is still very painful to touch--I think it was actually numb for a couple of days last week so I didn't notice how painful it was until recently. I ended up taking a day off from working out on Saturday. I'm always loath to do that but swimming, which is my normal Saturday workout, was out of the question (goggles and black eyes don't mix :nono:) and I just couldn't face the gym. I took a nap instead. :faint: I'm excited to report that I ran six miles on Sunday. I still didn't feel up to the gym and it was overcast and a little chilly, so perfect for running outdoors (don't ask why 6 miles outdoors seemed easier than then gym--I can't explain it :dizzy:). The first 4.5 miles were great, but then my knee started to hurt, so the last 1.5 miles were not so great. But I made it--6 1/3 miles in 57 minutes, exactly, which isn't a bad pace. :chin: It makes me wonder how much faster I could manage if my energy weren't so down from my head injury and I didn't have to stop and walk because of the knee problem. Oh, and then I locked my keys in the car :frypan:and had to walk home, so I got an extra 20 min of light exercise in :cb: (hey, it counts!). Then I took another nap when I got home. :faint: The cleaning people came today so I have a spotless kitchen. I love that! :carrot: Even better, it is going to stay spotless all week because I have all of our dinners prepared through Friday! I love that even more! :broc: Meg: Those are some seriously swollen knees! It definitely looks like about 4 lbs of water (and titanium) per knee! Yeesh, the whole story just gives me the heebie jeebies :dizzy:, especially that part about the bone saw :fr:. What an ordeal! I hope the swelling goes down quickly and I also hope you've scored some serious pain medication! Mudpie: Congrats on running 6 miles this weekend! I guess we both had the same idea  (great minds think alike and all that ;))! Robin: Oh no! Not your knee! Didn't you just get over a foot injury? I hope your knee recovers quickly (and if you still can't bend it tomorrow, maybe you should see your doctor about it). Score on the lifeguard though! The usher that helped when I hit my head last week was old--I definitely think my head would be healing faster if it had been some young hottie! Lily: Don't you know how to change a tire? The best strategy is to try to arrange for the tire to go flat in a place where there are virile men (preferably hotties) around. If this can't be arranged, tow car with flat to such a place. Open truck, get out lug wrench, and look confused :dizzy: and helpless :dunno:. Say "oh yes, thank you so much!" when virile men offer to change tire for you. This strategy has worked several times for me, although I've only used it when I managed to get the flat in a place where there were already men around. I've never had the gall to actually tow the car just to get someone to change my tire for me :lol. Sheila53: So sorry to hear that you have to move to Idaho. :( I can see how that would be a come down from Oregon (especially with a new kitchen--hopefully your renters will be appreciative). But at least you'll be with your DH and this time will most certainly be different. You're much smarter about eating and exercise now! Alinnell: I'm sorry about your headache :headache:, it sounds like it really :censored:. But it sounds like you have a great plan for this week. :carrot: Midwife: I hope you get your medical issue resolved. I am always loath to take a day off from exercise too. I know it will be that much harder the next time I'm back at it. Paperclippy: I'd be pretty hard-pressed to kill a mole too. Killing spiders is one thing, but once the pests have fur and look cute, well, it's something else entirely! Megan: My eating wasn't great last week either. I think I was definitely doing some "poor me" eating. Luckily I did okay all day, it was just in the evening that things went horribly awry, so I managed to keep my calories at maintenance. But it was really the wrong way to be going about maintenance. This week is going to be better! wndranne: I can only imagine how hard daycare is! Congrats on the minivan and swimming. Those first few swim workouts are always a doozy, but in my experience, you get it back quicker than you expect. When I first started swimming again, I could feel a noticeable improvement every time I swam. It's just an amazing cardio workout. Ravengirl: Congrats on the new job! That's great that you just walked in and convinced them to hire you! You go girl! Michelle:  Kudos to you for getting through the ordeal with your DD. Maybe the program should have mentioned that they were going to do that in advance, so you would have known where she was. I would have been out of my mind ! |
Good morning all!
Just a quick hello and a note about my jogging attempt's aftermath. I thought I'd gotten away clean :p with jogging 6K after not really even running to catch the bus in the last 20 years.
Not so. Although I wasn't really sore yesterday I found my feet and legs becoming more and more unco-operative with each dog walk. By the time I got to the 5th (last) walk of the day I was stumbling :tired: over tiny stones and generally not having much control over how high my feet would lift off the ground. Muscle fatigue is an interesting :?: reaction to a new activity from my body. I'm doing weights this morning :strong: (DH is away so I have a lot of quiet, non-busy time before work) and we're going kayaking in the evening. I'm curious to see if my arms experience the same fatigue as my legs . I lifted and carried a bunch of large rocks on Saturday and it did make my arms sore. My body the science experiment ;). Makes all of this a bit more interesting. Dagmar :twirly: |
Wow, this is a chatty group this week. Hi everybody!
Meg, I hope your recovery continues to go quickly. Those knees look painful! Megan, Fay is visiting us here in the Atlanta area now. We haven't had the severe weather you had and we do need the rain, but it's kind of a bummer. I had a busy week-end with my daughter's party. Here she is - what a wall flower! ;) http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8...D480/ry%3D320/ and in this one you can kind of see my "buff" arms - :p http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8...D480/ry%3D320/ I had an unfortunate run-in with her birthday cake, which led to other poor food choices. I am back on track now after sleeping like crap on Sunday night and having a stomach ache on Monday. Will I ever learn? See you guys later! |
Hi, Haven't been around in awhile. Busy, busy. Bil's memorial was Saturday. it was really nice, saw a lot of family taht I don't see too often. Picnic afterwards. It was a really hot day. came home sick. not sure if it was something I ate or too much sun. DH got sick later that night too, but haven't had a chance to talk to anyone else to see how they did. Problems with air this week too. First, air in DH's truck went out. Then, Friday the air in my SUV. Sunday the sir in the house. DH fixed the air in my SUV, just had to wait a couple of days to get the part. Luckly, we know a air conditioner guy and he came out between other appointments Sunday so we weren't without air that long. At first he thought it was the compressor which would have cost 2,500.00 but it turned out to be a broken wire so ended up only 100.00.
Went to GS's soccer game last night and had to sit wrapped in a blanket. Crazy weather. More news. DIl got a new job and will be working from home. I've kept he kids since they were born. I'm not sure how i feel about this yet. Meg, Glad to see you back! You're looking great, knees look good. Swollen yeah, but no S/S of infection. I'm a rehab nurse. You should have come to my hospital. i'd have taken much better care of you! No COFFEE!! Hey, we have coffee on the floor, you just have to ask. And a microwave too, so noneed for cold coffee. (can you tell i'm a coffee addict too?) I can believe it made a big difference in your recovery, your upper body strength. And the more fit you are, the better you heal. You do need to eat well though, need protein to heal. And what is this about not being able to shower in the hospital? Wardhog, Your little "princess" is adorable. Looks like all the little "princesses" are at their best behavior. And those arms are BUFF! Raven, congratulations on the new job. You must have made quite an impression! Mitchelle, I read somewhere that lack of sleep makes you hungry too. It's like your body is telling you "ok, if I can't rest then feed me". Not great for me, since I have a hard time sleeping. Barb, You ran 6 miles, and then walked home? I think you got your exercise for the day! Robin, Hope the knee is feeling better. Paperclip, I can't kill anything either. Not even a mouse, which I sure don't want around! I got a really nice complement at the picnic. One of the guests told me i looked really fit. This was a "YOUNG" man too. Not exactally a "hottie" like Robin got, but I'll take it! make it a good day, Freda |
Hi everyone! This thread is moving fast this week and I am busy at work, so this will just be a fly-by.
Michele - I think maybe I didn't get rid of the fat swimsuits because I store swimsuits separately from my other clothes and almost never wear them, so I didn't notice. I was just excited to buy my first bikini and ignored the rest of them! :) I'm planning to go get a new one this evening. Hopefully there will be end-of-summer sales. Ward - your DD is adorable! Dagmar - delayed onset muscle soreness = :( I have sore hamstrings and arms from scrubbing our bathroom Sunday! I am recomitting myself to keeping up with my occupational therapy home exercise plan for my wrists. I've been slacking off too much (only doing my weights once a week the past two weeks). This week I WILL do three days, so that I can move up to 3lbs 11reps next week and soon get to my exciting 4lb weight that I just bought. |
Good morning all,
Ok, one day POP under my belt. I can do this, and no need to be so hard on myself. Freda, being called "really fit" is a wonderful complement! Wardhog, looks like the girls all had a great time being little princesses. Nice arms! :lifter: Dagmar, lol, it's amazing how uncoordinated muscle fatigue can make you temporarily, but how strong it can help make you in the long run! A few more 6K's and your legs will be more used to it. ;) I personally love the soreness you get when you haven't done an exercise in a while - I call it "the good sore" or "the good pain" - it's somehow so satisfying! Barbara, glad your eye is slowly mending. Sounds like a great run! Michele, aww, your DD will be ok! Less sleep also makes me think I'm starving and also I crave salty things and candy. WTG resisting all those staff room snacks. Could you take an OTC sleeping pill or melatonin to help you get a full night's sleep? Sounds like you will need your energy, you will be busy! Hi Raven, it's so good to "see" you and hear that your DH's and your own health prospects are looking good. And congrats on getting a trial at a job! I'm sure you'll impress them and get a permanent spot in no time. I'm sure you will find a way to work your yoga & pilates in. Anne, yes, I will stop "should"-ing myself. It's a personality trait (flaw!) of mine. I guess I'm a work in progress! Glad to hear your new van has so much space and you are able to swim now. Meg, how are those knees today? Have a great day everyone! :goodvibes |
Michele~don't you just hate having to wait to hear from your kids? I go totally crazy and when you finally hear from them they're all like it's no big deal. Kids!
Barbara~I understand 100% how much easier it is to run outside than in the gym on the treadmill! First, you have a change of scenery. Second, if you run a mile from home, you HAVE to run a mile back. At the gym you can just stop at any time. POP. POP. POP!!! Wow, yesterday was great, and I have plans for today being just as good! Everyone have a great day! |
Blue, I had to laugh at your instructions on how to fix a flat tire. Unfortunately my tire is flat in my own driveway (and not many good-looking men hanging out around here). LOL. Since I bought all new tires 3 weeks ago though DH didn't want me to mess with having it fixed. He is gonna take the tire off tonite and take it back to where it was purchased. It actually looks like it has a small slit in the side of it.
Megan, I'd be too embarassed to dress up silly while driving Shane's jeep with the doors off it. LOL. But, I did get a lot of looks yesterday! DH gets home from work tonite. Sometimes I don't know if I look forward to his weeks home or dread them. My biggest problem is that since I quit smoking almost 4 months ago, it's very hard to see him constantly light up. I have to re-fight that urge every time he's home. Plus, the beer drinking drives me nuts since I don't drink at all! I don't know why that even a round of golf requires a 12 pack for him. My son called home last night. He sounds happy and is looking forward to his visit home. So far , thankfully, no one in his troop has been hurt. Michele, very glad to hear your DD was OK. That must have been terribly scary for you. Lacy is doing great in school this year. She absolutely loves being in the computer program half a day at vo-tech. I think she found her niche. Shelbey is taking all advanced classes to try to get into a better college. My 3rd oldest SD, Taylor, that is in the Coast Guard is having a real rough time with home-sickness. She is only 19 yrs. old and was recently transferred to Clearwater Florida. It's sad when she calls us crying and saying how miserable she is. I'm sure she'll be OK once she meets new friends in Florida. |
Aaaahhhhh!!! The children are gone, the husband is gone, the dog is behaving and I'm drinking my coffee out of an actual coffee mug, as opposed to an insulated travel cup, after getting another couple hours of sleep after they left. I almost feel human again! Plus I am at a new post-partum low in my spectacularly rapid 1/2 lb/week weight loss plan.
DS just partied on at day care yesterday so much that he didn't sleep! He slept like a rock for about 5 or 6 straight hours after we left. They told me he did very well, mellow, interested. Score!! He also just almost made it though the night again, but as a nursing mom, I didn't. I was very sore at about 3:30 and didn't get back to sleep after. DD received her sparkly leotard for her new gymnastics class in the mail yesterday, and she believes it is the BEST THING EVER!!!!!! Now if we can just keep it clean until Thursday. Jessica, enjoy your aqua aerobics. Maybe you still have the suits because they can't be donated? I find it harder to throw things away than give them to charity. Allison, I remember my mom was so excited to get me off to college. I think she had the car packed up several days ahead of time. I guess I was a total pain as a teenager, and she probably wanted to drink her coffee with no one screaming at her (it all comes around doesn't it??). But when I went to AZ for grad school, she was very sad. I hope your DD calls home a lot, and gets to visit often, too. Hi Josephine! Raven, glad to hear about your DH's prognosis. This sounds like one of those times in life you just get through the best you can, and then deal with the repercussions to your weight later. Good luck on the working interview! Barbara, I may be right there with you on the eye and the swim goggles. DD crashed spectacularly into my eye this morning and I have a bruise coming on. I'll have to see how bad it turns out, but it hurts a lot right now. I actually miss running a lot too, but my knee is still tricky and painful. I'm thinking of thinking of seeing a doc soon--the postpartum joint looseness should be going away, and that won't be a real excuse soon. Dagmar, you took 5 (!) walks with your dog after running 6 miles!! I'm so not worthy, and my dog thinks so too. Wow! Wardhog, your DD is gorgeous! Looks like she had a fun party. Freda, stay cool! You can take care of me next time I have to go to the hospital. I was on Meg's coffee schedule too. Blech! Megan, I "should" myself to death too. Easier to spot in others than in myself. I'm also working on it. Lily, I know you can do anything you set your mind to! Have a good day everyone! Anne |
Hi everyone!
I haven't posted since near the end of March. At New Years, I had a switch in meds and put 20 pounds on in 2 months. It was mostly due to a big appetite, cause I really didn't eat much junk. I leveled off at 130 and was able to 'maintain' that for a couple of months. But then I was having some really bad side effects (other than weight gain) and my doctor switch me back to my previous set of meds. The weight is coming off again and my appetite is small again. I've been away from my home scale since Friday a week ago, so I'm thinking I'm less than my ticker shows. At least I feel like I'm smaller when I put my hands on my waist. DH finally got a job at the end of May, but it's draw and commission only and he hasn't made a sale yet. The draw just pays for his apartment and communing expenses and I lost my private insurance disability in April which was paying our mortgage. I've calculated out that between his tiny draw, my small Social Security Disability, and our dwindling savings that we'll be out of money in November. So, I've been having terrible anxiety over our financial woes, which I think is also keeping me from eating much - my stomach's in knots. I did hire a lawyer and am appealing the disability termination. The company found my web site and saw that I have been selling a small amount artwork for the past seven years and decided that if I can do that, I can get a job as a 'fine artist' and earn a real income. Truly, the artwork was just a hobby that friends and family happened to like and decided to buy small pieces. I can prove on my taxes that I never actually made any money from it due to the expenses associated with it. In the mean time, I can't even try a part time job to help us out financially because that would just be more fuel for the insurance company. I feel very out of control of my situation and that's what's causing the stress which often leads to depressive or manic episodes. So far I've been 'stable' with the help in the switch in medicines. DH has decided to give up his apartment and bring our sailboat up to the Liberty State Park Marina in Jersey City near Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty so he can live on it for the winter. It will save us quite a bit in living expenses, but I think he's in for a very cold, wet winter. We've had some deck leaks on Fandango that we've never been able to plug and that plus the normal condensation that occurs when you heat a boat in the winter will make it very unpleasant to live aboard. Right now, I'm up in his apartment for a few days before I head back down to South Jersey to the house to catch up on the mail and bills. Last night, I asked him to take me to the marina so I could have a sense of where he'll be. It really is a beautiful marina with a fantastic view of Manhattan. It's in a much better neighborhood then he currently is in (I'm not feeling very secure in the apt with the drug dealers on the corner...) On a positive note, we've done a lot of sailing and entertaining on the boat this summer. We hosted a very fun dance at our yacht club in July. We have lots of fun activities schedule for this weekend and then next weekend we're using our credit card airline miles to fly down to Florida for my Dad's 80th birthday party. And the weekend after that we're sailing down to Atlantic City for our club's annual raft up party. So I do have things to look forward to. Tonight, I'm meeting DH in the city and we're going West Coast Swing dancing. Meg - best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hope your legs unswell quickly and you lose that water weight. Anne - congrats on the birth of your DS. Jessica - what kind of dog did you get? I remember in the fall you were really looking forward to getting one. Lily - congrats on being smoke free for 4 months. That's terrific. Hi Alison and Raven and hello to all the new people who have joined since March. |
Welcome back, Carolyn! Sorry to hear that you are having such troubles. I hope you can get your disability insurance back soon. Our dog is a mixed breed - we think he is mostly a German Shepherd/Doberman mix, but I think there might be some Shar Pei mixed in there too (he has a very curly tail and a bit of extra skin around his face).
Anne - LOL, I remember when I was about 5 years old and I got a sparkly pink tutu! I think I wore that thing 24 hours a day for a while. Back to work . . . |
my job involves walking
Keep forgetting a lot of you don't know much about me. Just to set the record straight I'm a commercial dogwalker. I do 5 dogwalks per day (sometimes 6 if evenings are required) but I don't have a dog of my own.
The subject of dogwalking comes up a lot in my posts so thought I'd clarify that. And if anyone wants a really spectacular bruise (Barbara take note) just have a one-year-old lab run full tilt into your face as you bend to pick up a ball for her. My eye was a multi-coloured sunset for almost a month. Dagmar (the lab lady) |
computer users (rant)
OMG. You know how they say that if you get an email, and you don't know who it is from, you SHOULDN'T CLICK ON LINKS, etc.?
How many times to I need to tell my employees this? And when will they realized that IF they do it, they should tell me right away so I can fix it? Argh! I just spent 2 hours getting rid of over 300 spyware files as well as a very difficult to find malware program that kept giving this employee popups every 5 minutes for the past two weeks. He even went so far as to download ANOTHER malware program that he thought would eradicate it from his system (it didn't). Ok. Rant over. Back to your normal programming. |
I am still out of town....my boss is sharing his laptop with me tonight. Have to be quick..
ALLISON and all the other mom's with kids at college for the first time...it does get easier! Meg...hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WARDHOG ~ your daughter is as beautiful as you! BARBARA ~ I missed the "eye" thing? Hope you are OK!! Gotta go....hi everybody!!!!!:) |
Meg - WOW!
You're really an inspiration to us all. A mile by next Wed. Great goal and I'm sure you'll reach it!
As for me I'm :o. DH came back home last night from a couple of days with his buddy. And brought a tray of those huge cookies available from the supermarket. Those puppies are 250 cals EACH! I told him to put them away immediately as cookies are my big weakness. He did but I saw where he put them. We had plans to go and kayak but he was too tired. So we sat on our butts in front of the TV. I was angry and bored and frustrated. So I ate two of the damn cookies . I'm so disappointed in myself. I thought, having lost the weight and joining maintainers, that I was over all of this stupid stuff. On plan again today but up into my red zone with the scale. Dagmar  |
Dagmar - Don't beat yourself up - it is really difficult to pass on those trigger foods when they are calling you from the cupboard.
I can relate - I've been following a low carb regime and went for lunch yesterday. Did I order salad with chicken or fish on top....Nooooo, I had to have the chicken doniar. At least I passed on the fries.:carrot: Meg - Really inspiring to hear you are already up and moving. Sounds like you will be back full swing before you know it. After having a stint of being virtually inactive after I broke my leg in Jan. I really appreciate both of my legs in working order. Have a great day everyone. Susan |
Yeah, Meg! Nothing's gonna hold you back!
Cute kid, Ward. I'm very impressed with your arms. Hi everyone! Gotta run. Busy day. Will try to check back later. |

Meg, you never, ever cease to amaze me. You are sooo remarkable. I am listening with an attentive ear as I believe one day, I may have to replace my knees as well. Speaking of which, my knee is better then I expected it to be. Getting out of bed in the morning though is beyond agony. It does improve shortly thereafter, though not to what it normally is. Carolyn, good to hear from you again. Hi to the rest of the gang. I am pressed for time. Have a great Hump Day. |
Good morning all!
Dagmar~I'm really sorry to say it doesn't get any easier as a maintainer. Just look at me--I've been "maintaining" for almost 2 years and in that time I've gained 16 pounds (down 3 as of today, though). Robin~I hope your knee feels better. Meg~continued good thoughts for a speedy recovery (and you go girl!!! I can see you doing a mile in no time!) Megan~are you POP? Have you found a place to work out or devised some sort of a plan? Gotta run. Will check in later. |
Hi Gary! What does the boss say about borrowing his computer to hang with the fat chicks?? :)
Meg, sounds like you are such a trooper. You'll be better than new with your bionics in no time! And, there are absolutely, positively, no more children coming out of me. I can guarantee it. Dagmar, it is never over! Six years (almost) for me and I still want the puffy snacks and round candies that must not be named every single day. Sigh. But it does get easier to resist over time. Hi Susan, midwife, Robin, & Allison. Good to see you all! Carolyn, it was good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you earlier this week when I posted, wondering what you were doing. Hope the disability stuff gets straightened out. See, just a couple hours of day care, and my to do list is just almost done, I'm keeping up with the thread, and drinking coffee from a mug yet again. I don't know how all you SAHMs do it! I need to get back to work just to rest. Well, DS did not sleep through the night last night, but that's OK. He'll get there. I swam again this morning and it was still such a slog, but I got 60% more laps done in about the same amount of time. I get swimming fitness back pretty quick, so another couple weeks and I'll be pretty close to where I left off. Running is a much different story! My knee was killing me before I went to the pool, and now it feels great. Don't know if it was the cool water or gentle motion, but hey, I'll take it. It was a little dicey where DD bashed my head and the goggles rubbed this morning, but at least I'm not black and blue there. Anne |
Hi all,
I got up at 5 AM today to get in a good gym workout before work, since I'm going out with the girls after work. Whew that's early. I don't know how some of you do it every day! I'm going to try really hard to get home early enough to sleep 8 hours tonight. A big group of friends and I are trying a fondue restaurant in "the big city" for ladies night. I've looked up the menu online, looked up the nutrition info, and plan to eat slowly and count my bites - and enjoy my friends, most importantly! Gary, lol, yes DID you tell your boss what you're using his computer for? Anne, glad to hear you're enjoying your swimming so much and it's therapeutic for your knee! Allison, yes, I'm POP also! Yay for us for being POP! The gym closes Sept. 20 so I have until then to use their equipment. For weight training, my mom in PA has found someone who is giving away a weight bench and a bunch of weights. I don't know what type or condition it's in, but I asked her to get it for me. I'm going home for Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving - it's worth it to me to drive to pick up so much useful stuff! Driving is actually cheaper than flying anyway, even with gas cost up. Until then I'll make due with body weight, hand weight exercises, yoga ball I already own, etc. For cardio, BF picked up a free treadmill for me. It's very old and doesn't have bells & whistles, but it works. I have a bike, and of course can walk/run outside, at least a bit - running hurts my old lady foot maladies. I would love an elliptical, but I'm waiting for either Christmas sales, or post-Christmas re-sales, as they are quite expensive for a decent one. That's my plan so far, though I'm sure you didn't know you'd get so much detail when you asked. I both overthink things and am determined to stay fit! If Meg is doing laps at the mall with her swollen knees, surely I can pull together a fitness regime without a gym! :p Dagmar, don't be so hard on yourself! With all of your other healthy eating and fitness, 2 cookies are not going to undo everything. We all still struggle with temptation sometimes, believe me! Today is a new day. Hi Carolyn, good to "see" you! I'm sorry to hear about your disability insurance and financial troubles. I hope they are resolved quickly and in your favor. It sounds like your swing dancing and sailing are still lots of fun! Did your DH's collarbone heal up ok? Have a great Wednesday everyone. :) |
Megan - since your gym is closing, is there any chance you could get an elliptical from them for a major discount?
Anne - Great job on the swimming! Glad to hear you knee feels better. Meg - You are wonderwoman!!!! I am proud to know you. :) Last night I bought a swimsuit for my aqua aerobics class. Exciting! I was not so happy about the price (even though it was on sale), but I figured it was worth the extra $$ to get a Speedo that won't fall apart too easily. I had a sort-of-NSV yesterday. I caught a cold, and then realized I couldn't remember the last time I'd been sick! (Sick as in cold/flu, not as in hypothyroidism and medication side effects.) Before I started losing, I had colds and flus really frequently. Now I almost never get them. In fact I'm already feeling better than I did yesterday so I'm hopeful that this will be a quick cold. I need some advice from you ladies this afternoon!! Last week I had a :belly: class at work. The person who was teaching it had sent a few emails about possibly changing the time/day of the class. Today I realized she hadn't sent a final decision, so I contacted her. She said that doing the class today at the same time as last week was fine. The problem is -- I didn't budget my time to allow 45 minutes off in the middle of my workday AND I didn't bring any exercise clothes. So what do you think? Should I go, even though I might get my work clothes sweaty and have to work a little late to make up for it? |
