  • About once a week I get an email from Bob Greene's Your Best Life. Here was the advice today:

    Quote:
Put an End to Emotional Eating

If you've ever gobbled up a candy bar before a big meeting with the boss, or spooned your way through a pint of ice cream after a breakup, then you're familiar with emotional eating. Letting your feelings (instead of hunger) dictate when, what and how much you eat can be very dangerous, especially if you're dieting. Try these tricks to put an end to emotional eating:

Keep a mood log. You may have heard that keeping a food journal can help you track your fat and calorie intake, but you can also use it to record your emotions. "For many people, this is very helpful in identifying which emotions lead them to overeat," says Adrian Brown, Ph.D., a psychotherapist in private practice in Washington, D.C. Once you've figured out your trigger, you can come up with better ways to deal with it. For example, if you tend to overdo it when you're lonely, make a walking date with friends or call a family member. Then, you won't have to turn to food as a way to fill your time.

Chat yourself up. The next time your stress levels soar and you find yourself en route to the vending machine, try to reason with yourself. Say, "If I eat that bag of chips, I'm going to feel good for a few minutes, but then I'll feel guilty, disappointed and frustrated. It may be hard to deny this craving, but when the feeling passes I'll feel confident and happy." It gets easier to say no to tempting foods once you get used to the feel of success.

Reframe the situation. "Many dieters mistakenly view food and weight loss as a black-and-white issue," Brown says. For example, say you give into a craving for ice cream, chocolate or whatever food is your weakness. You might reason, "Oh, well, I blew it. Now I might as well eat whatever I want." But that kind of thinking makes no sense. So what, you had a little slip? There's no need to make it any worse. You're not perfect, and you don't have to be to slim down.

Take your goals to go. Jot down the reasons you want to lose weight on a piece of paper and carry it your purse or wallet. Whether you want to be around to see your grandkids, look nice at your son's wedding or to keep up with your toddler, this list can be a powerful motivator whenever you're facing down a craving.
  • Has anyone else been having trouble posting using the Quick Post method? I've had to switch to Post Reply because the Quick Post just locks up on me. Luckily, I'm able to cut and paste what I've written so I don't have to retype everything.

Today I stepped on the scale fully dressed and was still at my secret wish weight. I'm going out to dinner in NYC and then to my brother's in CT for the weekend. It's his wife's baby shower. She's due in early September. It will be the first grandchild for my parents and they've waited a long, long time.

I'm going to try really hard to avoid my trigger foods and salty foods so I don't gain my typical weekend weight. Instead of going home to our house in South Jersey, I'll go back to our North Jersey apartment and stay there through the Fourth of July. We'll try to see the NYC fireworks.

Because I'll be away from home for so long, I'll be bringing our cat up to the apartment with me. When she's up there we call her "City Kitty". This morning, I've been 'starving' her since she sometimes gets car sick. She's been letting me know that she's hungry and doesn't like this plan.

Pam - my trigger food is also peanuts and it used to be M&M's or Hershey's chocolate before the my new medicine changed my taste buds. I also have trouble with chips and potatoes - fries, mashed, salad. Once I start I just can't stop until they're gone. No wonder I gain a lot of water weight over the weekends from all the salt that accompanies chips and potatoes.

Lily - glad to hear you DD is moving a bit more these days. She may not be walking yet, but at least she see you do it and it will be a role model for her in the future.

Allison - hope the weight keeps going downward for you.

Jessica - have you picked your honeymoon location yet?
  • Carolyn, I keep having the same trouble with the quick post. I thought it was just my computer and kept blaming my kids for leaving Myspace online all night. I can't tell you how many times I have retyped my post this week.

Grocery shopping was successful. I had SD and DD with me. We made it through the store and home without any junk food at all. I know we bought at least 6 types of fresh fruit, but that is OK. My DD is doing well now with eating a much lower fat diet. Her Dr. had me to put her on a 1500 cal. program and not more than 30% can come from fat. Her cholesterol level was normal, but her triglycerides are high. She seems to be taking an interest now in reading labels and trying to eat right. Actually this makes the shopping easier with all of us eating the same thing. DH doesn't care what I feed him as long as it tastes good.
  • Lily and Carolyn - Suzanne 3FC says other people are having problems with Quick Post too, and she's working on fixing it. In the meantime, use the Reply option at the end of the thread and you should be OK. If you have problems with that too, let me know.

Lily, that's great news about DD. I hope the diet changes help out her health issues.

I'm up ridiculously early thanks to my Kitty Alarm Clock. The problem is that it doesn't have an off switch -- it just keeps purring and meowing until I get up.

I need to get wedding planning advice from our bride-to-be! Tomorrow I'm flying to New Mexico for a five-day whirlwind of wedding planning. It's tough to do some things from out-of-town and DD has the week off, so I've created a monster list of tasks to do and am flying in to be on the scene. The primary goals are finding a wedding dress (and hopefully bridesmaid's dress), picking a menu for the dinner, and nailing down all 10,000 details regarding the reception. Even though the wedding will be small (50 people?), it's like planning the invasion of France. Except the clothes are prettier.

So today I'll pack and plan my travel food. I fly to Phoenix first, so need food for 4+ hours, then spend 3 hours in the Phoenix airport (I heard it was 111 degrees in Phoenix yesterday!), then an hour and a half flight to Albuquerque. I've been in the Phoenix airport before and know they have a Quiznos, so I can get a Turkey Lite sub there. But I'll take two or three portable meals along for the plane rides. Otherwise I'll find myself mugging the flight attendants for those tiny packets of snack mix.

I'm taking my laptop, so plan to check in.

So what's everyone got planned for the weekend? Isn't it goofy having the 4th of July right in the middle of the week? Is anyone making it a really l-o-n-g weekend and taking Monday and Tuesday (or Thursday and Friday) off?
  • Good Weekend All
Lily-It sounds like your dd and sd are doing great.

Meg-Good luck with all the wedding planning. It make my palms sweat to think about it.

    Carolyn-Sounds like a fun weekend.

Rabbit-I'm sorry about the job. That really stinks.

It is our annual town festival this weekend. I made it through the parade last night without any food mishaps. Hopefully today I can walk a wide circle around the elephant ear booth. Or maybe split one with 2 or 3 kids.
  • So much for my 'go easy on salty foods' plan for this weekend. Last night we were in NYC to go to Keiko Matsui's concert. She a pionist who's a cross between jazz and new age. She tours with the usual guarter, bass, & drums plus a sax player and a percusion artist that had more instruments then I've ever seen and it seemed like he used everyone of them for every song. Gongs, chimes, cow belles, salt shakes, whistles, pan flutes, there must have been a hundred different things that looked like he picked them up at a flea market. But it sounded good.

Anyway, before the show we grabbed a bite to eat at a brewery. I ordered the Cobb salad and it ended up being the smallest dinner salad I've ever had in a restaurant. So on the walk to the show, I got a NY pretzel from a street vendor. Big mistake. They're covered in large salt crystals. Plus you have to eat them with spicey mustard to get the true NY experience. I scraped off more then half of the crystals and only ate half of the very large pretzel - it's about 8 inches in diameter and an inch thick. Hot and very doughy.

So this morning, I'm 3 pounds heavier from the water retension. Tonight I'll be taking my brother & SIL out for dinner and will try to make better food choices. Then Sunday's the baby shower. I'm sure there will be lots of tempting food there.

Poor little kitty got car sick again on the 2 hour trip from our house to our apartment. She's not going to be happy in 2 weeks when we take her sailing in the ocean from Long Beach Island to Jersey City. We're going to dock in JC in walking distance to the Path train to NYC. DH plans to have his boss and other work collegues come over for week night sails around NY harbor.

What's everyone planning to do for the Fourth of July?
  • Meg~111 in Phoenix is outside. You'll be in the airconditioned comfort of the airport. You won't be able to go outside because you'd have to go through security again, and you know what kind of a hassle that is!

Have fun with your DD. I'm actually looking with my DD for a wedding dress this weekend. No! She isn't getting married! She has to choose one to wear next spring for her Senior Presentation--it's part of our charity thing. Anyway, there are 12 seniors and the rules say that no 2 can have the same dress, so we have to choose early so no one else can have our choice. Already 2 have chosen (but DD doesn't like the 2 that were chosen, so it's okay). Here is a pic of what she wants:presents dress.jpg

I'm also going to go shopping for some shorts for my Hawaii trip. Wish me luck!

I'm down 3 pounds in 2 weeks since my icky high of 145.5. I was hoping for a faster loss, but at least I'm losing! Can't wait to get back to 140 or 139 as it will be such a motivator because I won't be re-losing anything!

    Everyone have a great weekend.

  • Hi everyone,

I had planned to wait and weigh later in the week, but after 5 days of eating 100% OP and lots of exercise, I was lured by the scale. I am down 2 of the 4 lbs. that I had gained. My next weigh in day will be July 5th which is my official 1 yr. maintenance anniversary. I think it would be awesome to be back at 145 lbs. on that day, but if I am a still above by just a lb. or two, I'm not gonna feel bad about it. This first year has been hard for me. I've struggled. I've gained. I've lost. I've maintained for periods. I consider it my trial year and I'm happy for getting through it without putting back on tons of wt. The only ever time I had lost this much wt. was when I took Phen/Fen and that weight came back super quick.

So, 5 more days to try to lose 2 more lbs. Is it possible? I don't know for sure, but I'm gonna give it my best effort.
  • Hello,

I've made an appointment to speak with an endocrinologist. A while
ago I told my primary care provider (whom I like and whom respect for
most health matters) that I'm getting incredibly hungry immediately
after each meal, and he suggested adding a couple scoops of white
rice to each meal so I'll feel more full. [I think NOT] Long ago I
stopped expecting to get any good weight-management advice from
primary care physicians, so when he said that, I just smiled and
    nodded.

4Rabbit, I feel very easily judged by doctors, even when I know they're
misunderstanding my situation. So sorry to hear you didn't get this
most recent job opportunity, and I hope you can avoid taking it
personally. If you can, let me know how how!

MileHiMama, I'm also finding maintenance really difficult. (I'm not at
goal yet but I'm doing some maintenance for a few months before
trying to lose again.) One problem for me is that my most recent
weight loss was pretty rapid (2 lbs per week) and it involved pretty
low quality of life. The times I've lost weight and maintained more
easily have been after slow and gradual losses. Also I need to
spend more time walking, in addition to standard "gym" workouts.

I've put on 2-3 pounds in the last few weeks, although I'm not sure
how much is fat versus muscle, water, etc. Yesterday I had too
much white rice and the day before I had too much wine with dinner,
so today I'm recovering. Today I'm having no carbohydrates except
barley, milk, and non-starchy vegetables. Barley is pretty cool. I
still get hungry after meals, but it's not as intense and it doesn't
    last as long.
