The good old days
since we had started to get into talks about the things we loved as kids, I thought it would be a fun thread to reminisce together about all of the good things we missed or just remember and are glad they are gone. ;)
Some things already mentioned: The wax candy with the juice in it penny candy that actually costed a penny "Ringer washer" washing machines Drive- in movies Drive-up restaurants Candy cigarettes records, do you even make tapes anymore the floppy disks that were really floppy Saturday morning cartoons soul train American Bandstand....ok guess i can go on all day |
Here's one, the handheld electronic football, baseball and basketball games with only the red slashes on the screen. They reintroduced them as "classics," recently, but they are NOT the same.
|
Noxzema and other beauty products in real glass jars, instead of plastic.
Sit N Spin - the original Metal Easy Bake Ovens Bikes with banana seats and long handlebars Wooden Clothespins without hinges Real Tollhouse Cookie Dough Rotary Telephones |
Party lines (trying to make a call would get pretty bad if the other person wouldn't hang up, I was a kid then:)
Kids being able to go outside or run around with out the scare of them being kidnapped ( I live in CA) Crusing the strip (did anyone else to that? |
Carmen~ the barber shop my DS goes to has a rotary payphone still. One day I dropped him off and his DD was supposed to be there to pick him up, and I gave him $50 to call him when he got there.
Well about 30 minutes later his DD calls and says DS never called him. I go up there and DS is sitting there and says, "the phone is broke, when I press the number nothing happens." |
Well I know that Strawberry Shortcake and My little Pony are back - but I was so glad to see they brought them back so I can also enjoy them again with my daughter - I just love them
Cabbage Patch kids too |
Daytime game shows - all day long!
Kick the can playing hide n seek at night with all the neighbor kids community center dances riding in the back of a pick up truck Orange Crush soda in the glass bottles |

Britt - do they still have reel-to-reel tapes for movies in school?
|
Carmen - I adored the TV show FAME.
|
Julie im sure they do but i havent seen any in a long time. Or even the film strips we used to watch lol. Everything is on VHS or DVD these days.
|
oh, gosh, I'd forgotten the filmstrips! Wasn't there something on a tape or some sort of audio to go with that?
|
HAHA yep sure was an audio tape with it and it would ding or something like that to let you know to go to the next slide lol We used to fight over who got to turn the filmstrip wow what memeries that brings up lol
|
We loved the movie Karate Kid, we would play Karate Kid all summer long, sleeping out on the trampoline, walking downtown to buy candy, riding bikes, wow we had some fun!
|
About old things we still have a rotary phone in our house and it still works.
told my mom not to remodeled we will be back in style in no time. |
The Dinah Shore Show, Ed Sullivan, Mod Squad, Peyton Place, Dark Shadows
Block races with the boys, riding our bikes for miles thru rich alleys(from morning til dark) Going trick or treating as beatniks with a huge pillowcase (without parents) Wearing rollers on Sat to go shopping with a scarf Shock Theater (Sat nights), the Blob (my first scary movie) |
Star did you use those rollers with the gray sticky stuff in the middle? I always got my hair tangled in those. And to sleep in them?? yuck. I learned to love my straight hair.
Were you a Steve McQueen fan after the Blob?? |
HAHA mary you forgot that you had no shoes on either lol. You made me think of those i think they were called slap bracelets do you know what im talking about???
|
I remember slap bracelets! I loved jelly shoes, too, OMG they always gave me blisters, but I did not care. They were in. I hear you on the charm necklaces and jelly bracelets, too. We saw some at the store the other day, and my 4 year old DD went wild over them. Like mother, like daughter!
|
Julie, Yes, I always loved Steve McQueen after the Blob....lol
I use to sleep in 'brush rollers' OMG...and spoolies....haha Your right thank God straight came in style, but not just naturally straight - we had to IRON it.... Now those were the days.....NOT |
Ripp~ hide and seek was the only game we needed all summer and we were able to stay out all night it seemed like. Plus we got to catch lightening bugs :)
Carmen~ Thriller was the first video I can really remember, that was back when videos had premieres and everyone gathered around the TV to watch the new video coming out. Star~ as an adult I look at the places I rode my bike too and get tired just thinking about it, that is how we stayed so little as kids, maybe we should forget LAWL and just start riding bikes again  I remember playing outside all day and coming in the house and you can see the tan (and dirt) from the jelly shoes in squares. |
Wow all those things bring back memories. Do you guys remember He-Man and She- Ra, Bazooka Joes, and that kid Magazine called Highlights.
Also remember the smurfs... |
Oh Tee625 - you made me think of my fav's The Bionic Women and Wonder Woman......
It makes me almost sad to see Lyndsy Wagner do those mattress commercials. |
This is a great thread.....Shennie you and I must have grown up in the same time period....I was laughing at all the stuff you wrote!!
|
Highlights was the ticket. With Goofus and Galiant. What about the Dick and Jane books? I remember crying when I read them because Dick and Jane's mom and dad had a nice playhouse for them...
|
I love looking back at things from my childhood! I was a child of the 80's, and I'm so happy to see some of the toys that I loved making a return... Carebears, Strawberry Shortcake, etc.
I had a pair of jelly shoes too and those things were the most uncomfortable things ever, but they looked so cool, you kinda sucked it up! Oh and the jelly bracelets now are apparently linked to sexual favours... according to Dr. Phil! Leave it to the kids today to ruin something good! Hmmm... whatelse do I remember.... Rainbow Brite, Lite Brite, Glow Worm, Those Keepers... I had the snail that you could put your treasures in it's shell... Wuzzles... ahhh the list is endless. I miss how you could just play outside without having to worry. My parents never worried where you were. I could play marbles in a dirt pit forever and not worry about getting snatched. Ahhhh the good ol' days! |
Since I go back further than the rest of you, does anyone remember pop-it beads?
Rosie |
I am also a child of the 80's... does anybody remember Gem the barbie do. I use to love that show. And what about that toy Skip it, where you jump over the ball or whatever that thing was.
Anyone remember these TV shows Just the 10 of us, Small Wonder, Different Strokes, Punky Brewster, and webster. I use to love those shows. |
I loved the Gem song, "Gem. Gem is truly outrageous, trully, trully, trully outrageous" of course all of my spelling sentences had outrageous in them.
I absolutley loved saved by the bell. Webstre had the best house in the world, and how about silver spoons |
Yes Gem rocked! And with the doll, there was a little switch in the back that turned her earings on.
I loved skip it too! I had an imitation skip it, i think it had a strawberry on the end of it. The skip it's have also made a return. In the nicer weather the kids bring them to school and I wow them when I'm out on duty by showing them that Miss M is not so old afterall! |
I remeber pop it beads!
|
Rosie - YES, I remember the pop it beads. Matter of fact everytime I go to a estate sale or something like that I look for them, but I have never found any...they were really cool.
Ozzie and Harriet.....and oh lala, Ricky Nelson.... |
Shennie- Loved Saved By The Bell! How about Alf, Who's the Boss, and that show with Steve Erkel in it?
|
