Mindful Eating

  • I am reading a book called Eating Mindfully by Susan Albers. It's more of a Bhuddist approach to eating. There's a lot of meditation involved, and the four parts of the book are Mindfulness of the Mind, Mindfulness of the Body, Mindfulness of Feelings, and Mindfulness of thoughts. Has anyone tried a mindfulness approach to eating? I know it has something in common with Intuitive Eating, but there seem to be differences as well. The emphasis does not seem to be so much on weight loss but in becoming peaceful within so "mindless eating" does not occur with much frequency. - Lily
  • I'm not an expert on Buddhism, but I believe the important thing there is doing everything in life with mindfulness, including eating. It wouldn't necessarily focus so much on paying attention to physical hunger, satiety, and what you really want to eat as IE does, although they're certainly complementary. In Buddhism there is also acceptance / observing without judging. I may not be explaining that so well, but it's another element that complements IE well.

From the IE view, the mindfulness you study in that book would certainly apply and be an intensive supplement to the IE book.

If you're inclined to that kind of an intensive mindfulness practice, I say go for it. Sounds like a book for me to look for
  • I will check this book out, thank you!
  • You might also want to do some searches on Laurel Mellin. She's got some books on living mindfully, some specifically for issues with food, stress, or relationships. I've done one of her CD/workbook courses and found it very beneficial.
