Beware of the soups!

Went to the grocery store last night and was skimming through the soups and just wanted to warn you that you have to water out cause on alot of those soups that you can just microwave, that container really consist of more than 1 serving, most of them are 2 servings and so it may say 100 calories but that is 100 calories PER serving and if you have the whole can, that is actually 200 calories since you are eating both servings! Just check that out when you buy them!

Yup serving size is key - I do NOT like when they do that on things like those microwaveable thingies - I mean OBVIOUSLY the intention is to eat the container full. WHY would they do something deceitful like that??? Makes me nuts.

You have to watch "whole wheat" designations, too. They can use some ridiculously low amount of whole wheat and still use the term on the label. I've even seen some "misdirection" on items in the natural foods section at my grocery store.

The other thing about soups is that they are sky-high in sodium. The more convenient they are -- packets, microwaveable -- the more sodium they tend to have. Even things like Healthy Choice have more sodium than I like to have in a single food, and I'm not a low-sodium fanatic.

I make soups using low-sodium stock and freeze portions; other than that I just don't eat canned soup and I rarely get it in restaurants.

P.S. On the whole wheat / whole grain thing ... yes, you have to look for "100% Whole Whatever" on the label, otherwise it just means there is some whole grain in there somewhere, and it doesn't even have to be the major component.

I went to the store the other day and bought a couple of the Campbell's Soup at Hand. For 1 whole container, it equals 80 cals. On a cold day, what a great snack.
