Carbs, Fat, Calories?

  • which one should I count to loose weight?
  • As far as I'm concerned, I watch all of them. You want to try and balance what you eat. I concentrate on getting good fats, like in eggs, peanut butter, olive oil, and nuts, while keeping the bad saturated fats low. I eat complex carbs found in fruits and veggies but keep away from those found in white flour.

And recently, I've just begun watching the calories overall. I've noticed that if I don't count calories, I normally consume around 2,000 - 2,200 in a day. To try and lose the last drop, I try keeping it more around 1,400, but with a topsey turvey life right now, I haven't really been concentrating on it too successfully. At least I'm not gaining any back.
  • so how many should I take in of fats and carbs each day? i am 5'5" 185
  • I don't keep a count on mine. But I use Fitday.com to input what I eat. It provides a wheel that shows the ratio of carbs/fat/protein. I generally try to just keep my wheel balanced. I've seen various studies that say you should have so much percent of this or that, but if I spent that much time thinking about, and measuring out, percentages, I'd never find time to eat. Hey! Now there's a way to lose weight. LOL
  • I count fat alone. In doing so i have dropped 30 pounds. You must exercise. I consume no more than 15 grams of fat a day. I eat little sugar, and try to focus on fruits more. I avoid all oils and cook with "I can't believe it's not butter spray"
I take metamusil three times a day, the powdered kind. I mix it with 8 oz of milk an hour before each meal and it fills me up. My doc recommended that...and so far, i am doing well. I eat a total of one meal a day...now mind you, this is eating several small things all day...add up to one meal in fat grams
  • ok 15 grams of fat. i can do that...maybe *HAHA...so what do you eat all day? tell me what you had today. this will give me an idea. how long did it take you to loose 30 pounds?
  • Red, what I normally eat is an egg or two for breakfast, either poached, scrambled or boiled, with a whole grain cereal, bagel or muffin. I'll switch around some sides with it, like ham, canadian bacon, or sliced tomatoes each day. Later in the morning, I generally have an apple or banana. For lunch, I have something like a salad, sandwich with whole wheat bread and ham, organic vegetable soup, or a lean microwaveable lunch...anything along those lines. Later in the afternoon I have raisens or a piece of ham and swiss cheese or a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit. For dinner, I generally keep with lean meats like chicken, turkey, fish, a piece of whole wheat bread or some long-grain brown rice, and side vegetables. After dinner, I usually have something small as a late snack, like some peanuts or peanut butter if I'm in a sweet tooth mood.

The main point about losing weight successfully though, I believe, is in exercising regularly.
  • you need to find the diet that's right for you and your body- I hope you're taking all these as suggestions- not "this is what I'm going to do", if it doesn't work for you- don't be afraid to switch to something else.

me- I'm counting carbs, it's working for me, I lost 20 lbs in a little over 2 months- actually closer to 3 now I guess but I haven't had my 3 month weigh in yet either. (I'm expecting to weigh in tomorrow at 180 or less- so 25 lbs in 3 months) I'm eating 40-60 total carbs a day. none of the net carbs- I'm doing total carbs.

I eat 6x a day- my day is like this: protein shake for breakfast with skim milk, yogurt for snack, string cheese and 3 slices of deli meat- Oscar Mayer I believe makes 0 carbs turkey and ham slices, some kind of raw veggie- green peppers or celery or something like that, tonight we're having chicken parm- chicken breast, Low carb spag sauce and cheese- Chris will make himself noodles to go with his. and then a sugar free popsical for snack.
  • ok i am seeing a change. i have been eatting less then 1000 cals, trying to stay under 30 gr. fat and i am walking every night and since dec. 15th I have lost 5 pounds. most water weight i am sure.
  • ive heard a lot of people say that you should eat at least 1200 cal. yeah i know it sounds like a lot, at least that i what i thought, and especially when your trying lose weight! but i have noticed, the more i work out, the more i consume (mostly proteins). i also keep a journal to see what i eat. anything i put in my mouth i write down. its helped a lot. now if i even consider trying to stay under 1000 cals. i feel like id go hungry! i have also heard that if you vary your calorie intake, say 1200 mon, than 1400 tue, then 1300 wed... and so on, it keeps your metabolism revving. plus it gives you more options to eat whatever your craving, within reasons of course. this is what ive been trying do for my diet... mind you im still tweaking itto my bodys needs.
for breakfats ill eat a smoothie with fruits and some lactose-free fat free milk and a whey protein powder, lately ive been adding spirulina, barley and echinacea for an added boost and it really fills me up!
for lunch ill so something with a whole grain, veggie, protein
for dinner ill do the same as lunch but add in a fruit if i didnt get enough in the am.
and for snacks ill try some almonds or something along that line. somtimes im just not hungry for a snack or able cuz im working.
i also try to keep my sugar under 20 grams of added sugars (not fruit)

ok this is long i know but i hope it helps! good luck finding your balance

    peace irina
  • I am sure it may take awhile to get the hang of it and do whats right and learn whats wrong. But I'm trying *HAHA

it is coming off and I eat a buttload of veggies which i never did before. I have tried the low carb, low sugar, low this and no that and still was hungry and would get fed up! Basically what i have done in the past week is mornings eat a boiled egg and a slice of wheat toast with PB, 2 hours later eat a small snack like a yogurt and a hand full of veggies, then lunch more veggies and maybe broil a turkey burger, then 2 hours later another snack of some sort like fruit, then dinner, salad and chicken. tonight I am having baked chicken breast with a herb seasoning, brown rice and sauted veggies.
