hello, I'm new here and a bit overwhelmed!
so much here! I don't know where to even start! Guess I could start with a bit about me .... I am 36 yo, overweight, married, mother of 2, a part time student and a farmers wife. I am tired of being overweight, and looking round! I am under 5 ft and I really do look round! :o LOL. Any ideas or suggestions where to even start? I am not even sure what kind of diet to go on!! :?: I know it's time to look after this problem, but where to start???

a bit more about myself .... ok, I can do that. Way back a long time ago I was WW member. I lost my weight, made lifetime status, had 2 kids, still stayed @ goal, then I quit smoking and was diagnosed epileptic. I gained all of my weight back, plus more! The meds that make me seizure free and able to live a "normal" life also cause weight gain  . One thing I remember about the old WW program is, I was HUNGRY. I did try the points thing, but who has time to memorize all that? :?: I doubt if I am a low carber .... I love bread, pasta, potatos, corn etc. I think just plain healthy eating that does not leave me hungry is it, is there such a thing? O yeah, I will not go through another I'm hungry diet again!
Gonna dust of the treadmill and start there for exersize! |
Have a look at www.bodyforlife.com .... some folks at "ladies who lift" recommend it. It's pretty simple, ordinary food. I'm not hungry. Somewhere, there's even a thread 'eat for life' or somethng like that. I'll post a link if I can figure out how to do that.
There's also a doin' it the old fashioned way thread. They count calories. Move more and eat less. Pretty straight forward. |

I can understand the hungry part. I've been on numerous diets throughout life, and I always associated diets with lots of hunger. This time around, I specifically did NOT diet. I just ate healthy. I didn't decrease my portions, I didn't count anything. I increased my exercise, starting with a mile walk every day, working up to a run, then increasing the distance. I now run about 2 to 3 miles per day and/or do anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of aerobics, plus some weights, stretching, etc. And my appetite is now "naturally" smaller. At this point, I've started watching my calories cause I'm on the last few pounds here.
But when I started, I simply substitute ground turkey for ground beef, whole grains for white flour products (whole durum wheat pasta and whole or 100% stoneground wheat breads), and just ate less of the pasta, breads and potatoes. I would start with a salad or veggie and eat it all "first", then eat whatever else. I'd drink lots of water. I would force down two full glasses before each meal. Now I just drink water as a natural course because I'm so used to it. I don't do two glasses before meals now, because I drink so much water throughout the day. I used to buy fruits in mass quantitites. LOL I ate a LOT of apples as snacks. They're filling and even if you pig out on them, you can still actually lose weight. I snacked on grapes a lot too. It beat Twix. ;) I just looked for foods that were low in saturated fats and ate natural stuff more. But it was the exercise that actually made the biggest difference. From about Aug. 2002 to June 2003, I had only lost around 30 pounds. Once I began exercise...well here it is Oct. 2004, and I've lost right at 100. I used to look forward to those 5 pound increment decreases that I got to enter into the treadmill. Beware, when you first begin to exercise, you will develop muscle, which weighs more than fat. So you might exeperience a weight increase. Do NOT let it stop you. |
Great advice again AlmostHeaven. Shor, I'm still learning about this weight loss journey and still trying to fit in that exercise which is a key ingredient. I've lost 24 so far by counting calories. I limit myself to 1500 a day and read all labels and the cal. book. I only eat healthy food for the most part as that's the most satisfying. Like Almostheaven I've really cut down on bread, pasta, alcohol (almost none), sweets (almost none). I eat a lot of non fat yogurt, fruits, veggies. I also eat protein foods every day such as eggs (a few times a week), meats (turkey, some beef), nuts (almonds - very filling, just watch the portions). Good luck to you.

Yeah tired, nuts are healthy, but sure are a hard one on portions. I have to be sure to keep the can far away so I actually have to go get it. Grab one handful and put the can back. If I ever sit with an open can, I'm likely to eat the whole thing.

after doing a bit of web searching last night, I think a trip to the library might be wise. I refuse to buy all the diet books out there, especially when I don't know what's for me! I am thinking I might try making my own plan up. I can't see totally cutting out a food group, nor can I choke down those powered and prepared concoctions. I also know that driving to a weight loss meeting that is 40 mi one way once a week is not for me either. Hey, I know what I don't want!! LOL
So what do I want? I want to eat good healthy food, I want to learn the correct portion sizes, I want to lose 100 lbs. Anyone care to join me? Shortyrooschick |
