One more Seattleite checks in....

  • Hi there. Maybe it's all this 80-degree weather we're having that's motivating us to get fit, but whatever the case, here's another Seattle resident waving an arm to say howdy.

I'll be moving over the 100+ Club in just a moment but wanted to introduce myself. Just discovered you guys while googling for "Frances Kuffel"--the author of a new book called Passing for Thin. So there must be someone in one of the forums discussing this book. (It was a good read but I had some real issues/concerns with it.)

Anyway, I'm a big believer that "slow and steady wins the race" and that major deprivation just leads me on a quick path to "binge ****", so I'm focusing on portion control and exercise to get where I want to go:

    High Weight: 326
    Current Weight: 312-316
    Short-term goal: 290
    Goal Weight: 180

I haven't spent much time poking around the site yet, but I know I'll be chatting with ya'll soon.

    Fitfully Yours,
    LLS
  • Hi LLS, and welcome to 3FC!

I hope you’ll enjoy it here – the 100+Club is known for being very welcoming to newcomers, so I’m sure you’ll love it there.

As for Frances Kuffel’s “Passing for thin” – some of us have talked about in the “Other Books” in the “Dr. Phil - 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom” forum.
I loved the book, and would really like to hear about your issues and concerns with it.
We don’t really have a place to discuss books, but I would think that opening a thread in the “Library” forum would be the right place for it. I’m definitely in!

I also agree that slowly and surely is the way to go. I’m doing this very slowly. I lost 35lbs 1 ½ ago, maintained the weight until April when I started up with a new period of losing weight. I’m going to stick to 6 months of losing weight on 1500 calories a day this time too, so by November I’ll go back to maintaining the new weight. And continue to maintain it for at least 9 months. This is the way I can figure out which weight I’ll be able to maintain permanently (I’m an old yo-yo dieter).
Recently I’ve started to lift weights, so I’m trying to eat more protein – but other than that I just try to eat healthy.

*Love* your name, btw. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for too (I’m almost 6’)!
  • Thank you for the welcome. It's nice to wake up and come to the forum! I think this will help me go get on the exercise bike or the elliptical trainer!

Wow, you must be approaching heaven. Six feet tall and below 200 lbs. The weight lifting is a wonderful choice for you. Do remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so keep your chin up if you hit a plateau in "weight loss." Your lifting will keep you and your bones strong. Yay!

I'm going to head on over to read the comments on the book. I'll post something to describe my concerns. A book I read recently that I really liked was "Homesick" by Jenny Lauren (the niece of Ralph Lauren).

    Cheerio-

  • Hi again LLS! We didn’t so much discuss “Passing for thin” – some of us mentioned it when someone looked for motivational books. If you like to read and want to discuss books: come and see us in the “Alternachicks” forum, we have a thread there called “Beach blanket books!” in Alternachick Chat. We are several booklovers there!
Come in and let’s discuss “Passing for thin”!

3FC is really a great place to get motivated. Just to come here daily and talk to others who are working on some of the same issues as I do, is truly gold for me. It’s the framework of my motivation.

I really like the weightlifting! I know I’ve just started, but I get such a kick out of squats and bench pressing. Just like the real weightlifters do, you know?
I’ve used both bike and elliptical trainer as warm-up, but not for longer sessions. Do you alternate between them? I’ve found that both are excellent to get those burning-thigh-feelings!
