to you!

I hope that you find a plan that works for you (weightloss).. but it sounds like you had found one that did.. When you get down to a lower no the scale just does not move as fast As to exercise... try a DVD in your house and your kids can dance around you.(or if you cannot stand along time.. there are chair exercises too).. or walking and just being outside is simple and is amazing for your mind. Go for it.. You are important!

One thing I have learned about losing weight... You learn PATIENCE!

I have similar issues. My thyroid test came back at 56 or soemthing like that. SUPER DUPER slow/low. My heart was skipping beats, I'm sure my fertility was affected (not that I was trying to get pregnant as I'm done having kids), my hair was thinning, I was getting hot flashes. My blood pressure was sky high, my cholesterol was very high and my blood sugars were very high. But, it wasn't making me gain weight.

Once my thyroid was controlled with meds (and it's been adjusted 4 times in 2 years), everything is now perfectly perfect for blood tests and all measures. It was all caused by a faulty thyroid. How the slow thyroid affects people is very, very individual. Most people with a slow thryoid have lower blood pressure - but it can be the opposite (as it was for me) Some people will blow up like a balloon, others will not.

I do find though that I probably have a lower resting metabolic rate than would be expected. Who knows what it's from, but it does mean that I need to eat less and move more than most people to lose the same weight. Once you know what to do, it's just up to you to do it. Doesn't mean it's easy and that we don't slip up, but knowledge is power.

Hi Annanicole! I'm in NJ, and I'm hypothyroid too! I'm having a hard time also. I used to be so active before I had my son I was 128 pounds, but I had to work at it. Being hypo is so hard. I was at the gym at 4am atleast 5 days a week, and my eating habits were not very healthy. When I got pregnant with my son, my thyroid made it difficult to work out. I always felt drained and sluggish. I ended up with toxemia and my weight skyrocketed to 205. I got down to 160-ish and teetered there for a while. Now I'm back up to 190 (it actually hurt to type that lol). I have tried to get myself into working out again, but the initial push from no metabolism is so hard. I'm trying to stick with it, but with a 3 year old, it's definitely challenging! Keep your head up, it's possible to get down, it just takes a LOT of work!
My research on being hypo led me to one single bodybuilder with Hashimotos disease a few years back. He explained to me that having thryoid disease meant that we had to approach fitness in a different fashion. We're very sensitive to carbs and whereas a normal person would burn 100 calories doing a certain exercise, we wouldn't burn as many. Cardio was very important for those with thyroid disease to shed weight.
But anyway, best of luck to ya!

Hi Annanicole,
My mom has hypothyroid and also had a hard time losing weight. She takes medication for it and once the dosage was adjusted correctly, she started feeling less sluggish. She began a high protein nearly zero carb diet and lost 45 pounds in about 4 months. I don't have a problem with my thyroid (I have it checked every year due to family history) but both my mom and I seem to be particularly sensitive to simple carbs. We also both have very low vitamin D levels. Since I started taking a D3 supplement and also eliminating most wheat and grains, I've lost 17 pounds since January. I do also track my calories and exercise most days a little bit. I am recovering from a complete achilles rupture and and can't do a lot of things, but I do yoga for pain relief (Peggy Cappy) and I was recently given permission to ride my recumbent exercise bike again. I guess the point of all this is that even with a thyroid problem it's possible to lose weight, there may be other issues (food sensitivities, for instance) that are limiting you, and there are definitely low-mobility exercises out there that you can try, so keep trying til you find what works for you.

I too am hypothyroid. I was diagnosed at 15 due to my falling asleep in class and they couldn't wake me up. Over the years, there have been several times when I started sleeping all the time again that when they tested me, my thyroid was not even functioning at all. Each time was when I had put on 40-50 lbs or the one time I was pregnant. They adjust my medicine periodically. When I lost 86 lbs down to 170 in 2006, Doc lowered my medicine by a little over 1/3. I put back on 38 lbs since then and was starting to repeat the cycle. Since February 2nd, I have successfully lost 22 lbs. The only way I can lose weight is to cut out anything white (flour, potatoes, rice, pasta, bread) and sweets. I have to limit vegetables also. I am currently using the Metabolic Research Clinic plan to lose the 22 lbs. I have done Atkins in the past. I like MBC better because they add back berries and a few other fruits. Any plan that will cut your carbs should help you lose weight successfully. As for exercise, I have chronic back pain due to a work injury so the only exercise I can do is water exercise. I am up to jogging in the water for 30 minutes at a time and doing 150 stomach crunchies. I hope you find a plan that works for you and some form of exercise that you enjoy. By the way, Sittercise is a great chair exercise dvd.
