A mish-mash of diet and exercise

Loosing weight stinks. Its sweaty, it hurts, the food restriction stinks, but im hoping that the results are worth it.

I am Alisha, a 39 yo mom of 2 boys that keep me on my toes. I am currently at 222 which is down from my all time high of 327. I had gastric bypass in December of 2007 and lost about 120 pounds. In 2009 my youngest son started having some pretty dramatic health issues which ultimately resulted in a triple organ transplant last March. Eating in the hospital is far from ideal. To many comfort foods. To much soda, to much ice cream, to many kit-kat bars. I packed back on the 20 pounds on and off since 2009 but now facing a new challenge.

My son has a wish to go to Hawaii and zipline through the forest. I am worried i am to overweight to go with him and i REFUSE to let that happen. Its hard though, I had surgery on my ankle in September and its been slow healing. I cant jump, i cant put a ton of weight on my ankle yet so all my exercise is modified and at low impact aerobics because i just cant even do a jumping jack.

So im doing a pretty rigid diet plan, one of my own and probably not all that grand and maybe that is where the support from a forum can come in. Im eating all morningstar farms vegan burgers and sole protein. Today I had a spicy bean patty, a can of tuna and 4 oz of a pork roast. My calorie intake is pretty low but i dont know what i am doing. I dont have the money to pay a dietician i just have to wing it.

Exercise wise i have been doing a bit of p90x and zumba (kinect) but as i said, my ankle really has me restricted on how much exercise i can do.

I would love to talk to others about limits that cant be overcome but still succeed. Recipes or support would be helpful for diet as well. Thanks all and hoping for success!

Alisha

Hello fellow Seattle-lite :) Welcome to 3FC (I am new as well). It's great that you are continuing on your journey to good health.

From your little bio, if I may suggest buying some good health books to get your firm foundation started. One of the successful diets that I have been on was the "The Abs Diet for Women," it's greatest tip was to not feel full nor feel hungry at any given time. I ended up losing 25 lbs in 3 months from that book.

For some cardio in result of your ankle surgery, you can consider some bicycling or cardio boxing. Also, muscle building eats up unwanted fat. I know a bunch of women who are scared of muscle building because they "don't want to look like a man" but low intensity muscle building is good in the long run, and you really don't pack enough muscle to have "beefy arms" because of our lack of testosterone.

But yeah, some tips from me, take it or leave it :) Good luck with your journey!

No need to buy anything! There are loads and loads of tips online! Sounds like you have a solid plan and are doing all you can right now on the fitness side (I'm also a Zumba-girl!!). Best wishes!!

Hi Alisha!

I also have a Kinect, but I haven't tried the Zumba game yet. My parents got me the Nike+ Kinect training and wow I had no idea it was going to be that challenging. Like you I also have some restrictions, though mine are mainly in my right knee so I can't do a lot of the lunges and and things the program asks for. I wish there was a way to tell the game if you have those type of injuries but it doesn't have the option. :/

I wish you good luck on your journey. I'm just getting back on the wagon myself :)
