Default question on pounds to lose in a week

Hello,
I have a quick question for those with more diet/nutritional education than i have. I just started reducing my calorie intake on 11/9. I weighed myself today 11/16 and have lost 5 lbs. My starting weight was 273. I'm now 268. I'm 5'8 and 28 years old. I have reduced my intake to 1500. I also workout about 3-4x per week. I've heard that losing more than 2lbs a week is not good, but does that just apply to people who are just slightly overwight?

Thanks
Jen

I'm in the same boat. I lost 4lbs in 4 days. I'm pretty sure its all water weight. I think it might be water, but you also have to realize you have been eating XXXX amount of calories and now you have reduced it to 1500. You body is used to burning the XXXX amount. So i don't think its something to worry about

I was just reading Diet 101 and the author addresses this. When we first start to lose weight, we're dropping water and glycogen stores. It can range from 7 to 20 lbs, depending on how big we are.

I also read that a healthy fat-loss rate is 1 to 2 lbs a week because we won't be losing muscle mass at that rate. As we lose fat, more water comes off with it but I'm not sure how much.

Thank u Georgia! I knew there was something said about 2lbs a week. So its safe to say that up to the first 20lbs lost could be water/ glycogen? Guess I should get a book!

No worries! As long as you're taking care of yourself the healthy way (eating properly in accordance to your diet plan and exercise plan) you're right on track. My weight loss started out that way too. I started out in the upper 200's and I decided to modify my diet and exercise just to see if I could stick with it. While I was able to, I found I needed to tweak what worked as there is a lot of truth in the words, "everyone is different". You're on the right track and sound like you're taking care of you the best way that's for you and that's awesome, congrats! Also, I've found that when I was a little more "fluffier" than I currently am as of now, it seems the lbs came off a little quicker. I know that it all wasn't fat loss, but at least it's still in the right direction to that goal.
