Hey everyone, this is my first post...
I am a fairly healthy person. I've done several 10km races and a half marathon, and am eventually looking at a full marathon. I do yoga weekly, and love be active outdoors when I'm not busy with school.
I love vegetables and fruit, and am a vegetarian (don't have a lot of dairy either, but I make sure I get my daily protein). I rarely drink alcohol, specialty coffee, or sugary beverages, and pretty much never eat chips or pre-packaged foods. I manage stress well and tend to get good night's sleep, especially for a student. I rarely get sick, and don't notice any other major symptoms of poor health.
Yet I am overweight (right between overweight and obese BMI). I can't seem to lose more than 5lbs without regaining it the following week! All the weight-loss advice I get tends to be for people who are inactive and eat junk foods. Any tips for fat loss for someone who is otherwise quite healthy?
Thanks!
There was a long time where I was like that -- always biking and getting outdoors, eating healthy vegetarian goodness, and yet somehow not losing weight!
The big thing I'd recommend is counting calories. Particularly, measure out things like oils for salads and stir-fries, and be careful with portioning rice and bread.
It may also do you well, though, to see a doctor. Although you could be packing on extra calories with too much olive oil and too much brown rice, it seems to me that that in itself wouldn't make you borderline obese. You may have a thyroid condition or something that's gone undiagnosed.
Hope that all helps! Thinking about being back in Vancouver, biking through those wonderful streets...ahh! I miss it so much.
You sound a little bit like me. We are at the same weight and have a similar goal weight too. I run quite a bit, I consider myself to be reasonably fit. I actually have been diagnosed as hypothyroid, and I take medication for it. I found out about it by accident, I have no symptoms, nor has that changed since taking medication. I hear many people with hypothyroid have a harder time losing weight, but unlike you, I eat a lot of crap and drink a lot of beer, so until I actually try to stick to a diet, I can not say if it's my thyroid or just my bad habits. I am trying to count calories, but like I said, I haven't stuck to it long enough to know if it works. I also think I need to add some different exercise, my body seems so used to running that it's not such a big calorie burn for me anymore. Anyway, since our journey ahead is so similar, perhaps we should stay in touch.
Thanks for the comments! I may visit a doctor soon, just in case. Meanwhile I will keep an eye on those carbs (like rice), as I probably end up replacing meat with carbs instead of other protein sources
Nice to know I'm not the only one who struggles with this!
As backwards as it sounds, it could be because you are not eating enough. My boss is an extremely active person who ate really well. However, she was 30 pounds over weight. It turns out she was not eating enough for her activity level. Once she upped her calorie intake, the weight started coming off and has stayed off for about 3 years now.
