Default Back to try again.

I've been here before, each time after a major life event that took its toll on my in pounds. Today I am at my heaviest, having yo-yo'd between 190lbs and 240.

At 250, a week away from graduating a nursing program, I'm need to start handling this. Who wants to take health advice from a fat nurse? (I see it now, "Sir, adopting a healthy lifestyle and losing weight would be the best non-pharmaceutical treatment for your diabetes/blood pressure/obesity." Do as I say, not as I do. Seriously?)

I often find myself feeling helpless or hopeless or victimized by my own doings, I want this to change. I am not a victim and I am sick of being so unhealthy and fat.

While I think it is great that you want to lose the weight(again) I feel that I should tell you that as a "fatty" I HATE when skinny people tell me to lose weight. Unless they have walked a mile in my shoes then I feel they have nothing to share. So perhaps after you lose it you can share that you have been there with your patients? My doctor(who I refuse to see-I see his NP) is a jerk. He thinks I should just diet to fix everything. He is skinny and one of those you can see has never had a weight problem. Of course he blamed my leg swelling on my eating too much sodium and being fat. Turns out my tests all came back GREAT and had nothing to do with that. Ok sorry for getting off topic. Just letting the patient know you have been there can make their world a WHOLE lot better.

Congrats on your nursing degree. That's really great and you are going to be a great nurse, because you care about your effectiveness with your patients.

I think that to be successful, you need to figure out why you went off track. You say a 'major life event', but it's really how we respond to events rather than the events themselves - unless it's a personal health issue - that results in our gaining weight. You don't have to get into detail here - that's more something for a therapist or counsellor - but I think that's really key. What is it about how you respond to the world that leads you to not care for yourself. You have all of the other knowledge you need to get to where you want to be...and you have to want to do it for yourself.

This. So much. I spent most of my teens being "schooled" by my skinny friends about how to lose weight when none of them had ever been overweight a day in their lives and scarcely knew what they were talking about. No one who is fat wants to listen to a lifelong thin person tell them how to be thin.

OP: Welcome back! And congrats on your nursing degree. I'm very new around here but I've noticed a lot of the introduction posts are from existing members starting again and I think that's great. I've stopped and started so many times in my life; it's comforting to think I'm not the only person who, despite frequent setbacks, keeps dragging myself up and throwing myself back on that wagon!

I know how life gets in the way of weight loss. I'm trying to lose again (for the last time) and I'm hoping to get the motivation I need to reach my goal. I wish you all the best in your journey.
