it'll get easier. Also, I always like to recommend zumba if you hate exercising. For me, it's so fun, it doesn't feel like exercise. I'm also from the bay area, but living in socal now 

I agree that dancing would be a great way to start. I do that 2-3 times a week or more since I have some physical challenges and old injuries that I have to watch out for. I also do easy toning and reflex exercises and hand-weights; and don't forget just plain walking is good too.
