I have the same problem- and I'm sorry to say, that for me, it's going to kind of be like a recovering alcoholic with alcohol for the foreseeable future- meaning I'm just going to have to avoid it like crazy, or it will take control of me.
I had a nibble of my bf's candy bar the other day- barely enough to taste- and I went totally beserk for the next few days. I had the feeling like I "needed" something sweet, and wouldn't be able to calm down until I got it. This resulted in eating 1000 calories worth of animal crackers, then having to exercise for several hours the next day to make up for it. Not worth it.
So, with the exception of that experience, I've been sugar free for the last month. I didn't start eating fruit until a few weeks in, and even now I won't eat more than 1-2 pieces per day.
I found that what helped me was finding low calorie savory foods that I enjoy, and sticking exclusively to those savory foods.
You can do it, and if you're anything like me, then it will serve you better to stay totally away from sugar as if it's heroine. Can't trust a junkie with one hit, right? You see a lot of dieters who talk about how they work sweets in, but not everyone can do that. I'm a perfect example.
