Default New and not sure where I fit in =/

Hi all I'm new to the foum.... and I am not sure where to start! So I figure I would ask... but 1st here's a little about me...

I'm a 44 yr old single Mom diagnosed with Hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) and I have yet to find a decent doctor or have my meds optimized. The word DIET makes me sick to my stomach and makes me want to eat even more! I know I need to watch what I eat... but honestly what I eat isn't "That" bad.... OK yes some of it is... I have no idea how to plan my meals, eat healthy or where to start so......... here I am..... I also have a fear I am passing my bad food discisons on to my dd... who is EXTREMELY active and a level 7 gymnast so weight isn't an issue for her yet.......... she's 11 and weighs 98 lbs of muscle .......why am I here? I am here to learn and hopefully change my bad habits( and hopefully drop a few pounds)! I have never had a weight issue until I quit smoking in 2004(gained 10 lbs)... and then I was diagnosed with Thryroiditis in 2009(gained 20 more)....... so I'm looking for a LOT of help and Direction and I am willing to take someone's hand to guide me PLEASE

My coworker has thyroid issues and the funny thing for her what's "healthy" for us isn't for her. She can't eat things with phosphorus like wheat bread she has to have white! Isn't that crazy?! She also can't drink regular milk but she drinks rice milk (she checks all labels for phosphorus which is found in A LOT of food). Now I think she is hyperthyroid because when she's not regulated she loses weight like mad so it might be different for you than her.

I'd google "hypothyroid diet" and see what comes up- usually there are guidelines that will tell you what to avoid and what's best for you.

Good luck and welcome to 3fc!

Welcome KimZ
There are many groups here on 3FC, feel free to have a look around to see where you feel most at home. People here are very helpful and knowledgeable, so I'm sure you will feel at home in no time!
Have you thought about what approach to take? I'm not that familiar with thyroid issues, but my mum has hypothyroid. She eats a standard lacto ovo vegetarian diet and that works well for her. She uses a health store supplement that is rich in iodine, some kind of kelp I think.
A lot of people start off by counting calories, and if that is something you have thought about there is a forum dedicated to that. There is also a section called dieting with obstacles which might be helpful for you.

Definitely check out the Dieting with Obstacles forum because there are lots of people who ask questions about hypothyroid issues. Also, I totally understand the fear of dieting. Just telling myself that I am dieting makes my stomach rumble and I start having the strangest cravings. I like to term my eating plan a lifestyle change and I strive to make better choices. Currently I am doing WW and I love it, but for a year before that I was focusing on calorie counting and making good food decisions.
