Red face Post-pregnancy fatty thinking of going vegan!

Hi all! I really like the atmosphere of this site so I hope someone will be able to give me some advice. I'm 28, and I gained about 40 lbs with my son who was born in March. I've reached my breaking point! I can't even wear my "fat jeans" anymore, and to top that off my mother-who is very thin and health conscious at 54-just discovered she has a genetic condition that causes heart problems including very high cholesterol and blood pressure. I'm a ticking time bomb!

I've tried lots of moderate diets over the past 10 or so years, but I'm thinking of doing something way more drastic and becoming a vegan. My thinking is that if I dive right into a major life change I might be able to make a clean break. Is that even possible?

As you can see I'm a compulsive typer as well as over-eater. I hope some of you will check out my personal weight loss blog I Ate My 15-Year-Old Self...What Now? The whole idea behind it is that I want my personal struggle to inspire and entertain others, especially since it tends to be hilarious when I fail at things

Going veg and vegan is great, but it's tough. And I have to warn you about soy, if you have too much, it has been shown to cause breast cancer and thyroid issues. Honestly though, veganism isn't really about losing weight, because it is possible to not lose weight as a vegan (after all, potato chips are vegan). It takes a LOT of dedication. I would honestly recommend just eating less dairy like cheese, and to cut out pork and red meat, and to eat lean chicken and turkey, and seafood. and LOTS of vegetables! and the thing about being vegan, it can be difficult to get in your protein in the beginning, and you might have to take some supplements like iron and omega-3.

that being said, if you have the willpower, go for it. I only lasted a month vegan and stayed vegetarian for a year and a half.

When I first went vegetarian, I actually gained weight, so you have to be careful. There's loads of vegetarian/vegan junkfood out there, so making that change doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight. It can also be overwhelming making a huge change like that all at once, on top of trying to lose weight. Definitely try adding in more fresh, whole foods, though.

Fruits, veggies, and whole grains are all great additions to any diet. If cholesterol is an issue, make sure you're getting enough fiber, it can help lower cholesterol levels. Cut down on saturated-fat levels as well (cut down on red meat or use leaner cuts, switch to skim milk or a non-dairy alternative, etc.) Also keep an eye on your sodium levels, that will help with blood pressure (you're supposed to get a max of 2300mg a day).

If you really want to go vegan, though, go for it! But I'd suggest making small changes over time, instead of all at once, so that it's not as overwhelming. Good luck!

I also gained weight when I was vegetarian. I've had a few friends who were vegan and one thing to look out for is since everything is made without ANY animal products (butter. Mmmmm.) some products use more salt and/or sugar to give foods flavor. You also have to be very good about finding good protein sources. Also, Idk who all you cook for, but you might want to see if they're one board too or just get used to making two different meals.

I do think going vegan can be a healthy and compassionate choice, just make sure you do your research. There are a lot of great products out there.
