New Orleans Intro

  • well i suppose i could pop out of a cake or something to introduce myself but maybe thats not a good idea considering i would have to taste it first...
so here is my proper introduction..
im sharon..im a 29 year old born and raised in new orleans louisiana. im the youngest of 7 children and i am also the biggest. all of my 3 older brothers have always been average size..my sisters all have been over 100 pounds and lost it and back and forth.
well my oldest sister just lost her 32 pounds to make her super what i would love to look like size.
so i hae been trying to gear up and do what i can to motivate myself and do what i need to do to lose weight. and in the process help my gf.
she has gained like 25 pounds since she moved in with me and blames me all the time for it. lol
well im putting that to a stop. if i can loose it so can she.
ok.. so my issue is cooking.. what the **** can i cook that doesnt take so long and can feed me without making me want to eat the fridge 2 min later???

  • thanks
just reading your weight loss journey truly inspired me!!! thank you so very much!!!!!
  • Hi, and welcome! I'm also a NOLA native--and as far as I'm concerned, the food here is so good that the real mystery is why everyone in the city isn't overweight.

I cook a lot of Indian-inspired food as it tends to be a pretty quick, easy one-pot meal that's heavy on veggies and light on more caloric elements. Plus, all that flavor keeps my mouth from being bored. Red beans are actually a pretty good bet--IF you go light on the sausage and the rice, heavier on the beans. Of course, that's not exactly quick, but once you make a big pot, they last a while.

In fact, that's been a big help to me--I fix stuff in large amounts so I can have it later. I make pizza dough in a big bunch, then portion it out into personal-pizza amounts; when I'm hungry, I'm only ten/fifteen minutes away from pizza. I also make the most of roast turkey and chicken; what doesn't get eaten immediately becomes a topping for salads or filling for wraps later.

As for feeling hungry not long after eating, I've kind of solved that by eating more little meals rather than one or two huge ones like I used to do. Ialso live by a rule I picked up here on 3FC: if my meal doesn't contain a fruit or vegetable, it isn't a meal. Adding the veggie bulk helps.

On an entirely different note...OMG, were you as nervous as I was during that Thanksgiving Saints/Cowboys game!? I lit a candle for Malcolm Jenkins this week and I'm not even Catholic.
  • lmao!!! about the game.. yes i was very nervous!!!
thanks for the tips!! very appreciated
  • I'm from Baton Rouge but consider Nola a second home... welcome

And, Celeste, I was on the edge of my seat for that game!! I went to see a movie with the family @ 7:00 and the game hadn't ended yet so we all stayed out listening to it on the radio until it was over...
  • ok southern belle....out with it!! what are you doing?? you hve lost so much!! i need one of you to kick me in the *** right now so maybe it will fly off!! haha. i know it is so hard to do and i make all kinds of escuses to why im not doing it. but some of them are ligitimate. so help help help please!!!! give me your advice... i need my southern girls advice!!!!
  • I am actually just calorie counting. I have stayed between 1200 and 1600 cals almost every day for the past 5 months and haven't gone above 2000 or below 1000 any day in that period (other than Thanksgiving which was a planed cheat... we ate at Palace Cafe ). If you try that, you will see it melt off. It is in no way easy.. especially for the first month or so. But, now, it is routine and I don't get hungry if I eat that amount anymore. Our starting stats are almost the same... and our goals You may find my diet plan too rigid. In order to lose weight from our starting size, you definitely don't need to be that drastic or strict with your calorie counting. However, that is what I have done and have lost 90 lbs in a little over 5 months. Good Luck!!! Keep us updated!

  • Southernbelle102: mmm, Palace Cafe, good choice! We've never done Thanksgiving there, but I know they do a great Sunday brunch.

Ninety pounds in five months is outstanding! I really admire your resolve; I hadn't noticed just how amazing your weight loss has been so far. Just had to pop back into this thread and tell you that.

Feelmyrainbow, hope things are still going well for you--don't be a stranger.
