Default Hello I'm New And Am In Need Of Support!

Hello my name is Melanie and I am 21 years old.

I have been having weight issues my whole life and have tried dieting for years.
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this social community where many others can understand where I am coming from.

I hope to meet many people that can support and encourage me through my journey just as much as I am willing to support and encourage them through theirs.

Hi Melanie! I'm new, too. I'm 22 and, like you, have struggled with weight and diets since I was young. I know what you mean about support and encouragement. I'm in desperate need of it, as well. So I'll support you and maybe you can support me and we can lose weight and get healthy!

Best of luck with your goals!

-Andi

Hi, Melanie. I'm pretty new here, as well. I'm a little more than twice your age, but I feel more your age than mine. lol Welcome and hopefully we can all support each other and lose that weight!

Welcome. I suggest you look for a Support Group or Challenge to join; a small group of friends to help keep you motivated, find one that inspires you or fits your needs, and just post to join.

Hi Melanie -- I am new too.

This is a great place -- look around at the various forums and find somewhere where you can plug in. Everyone is extremely nice here, I am sure you will like it as much as I do.

I don't really know of any recipe sites, but I do know how I like to cook chicken breasts -- I eat them often, several times a week.

I spray a baking pan with olive oil type non-stick cooking spray, and place the chicken breasts so they are not touching each other in the pan so the heat can circulate. I then either spray the chicken breasts with the spray, or else drizzle a little olive oil on top (any type of cooking oil would work, I just prefer olive oil cuz it's healthier). I then season them -- usually sea salt, coursely ground black pepper, and thai seasoning that I bought at the health food store, but the spices can vary depending on my mood . You could use anything that appeals to you -- chili powder, seasoned salt, italian seasoning, garlic powder, even a bit of parmesan cheese (just go light on this cuz it will add calories).

I bake them at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes, and then cut into one to check if it's done -- usually it takes about a half hour depending on how big they are. If I am real hungry I cut them up small before I get started and they cook quicker. Sometimes if I am starved I cut them in half when they are about half done to speed things up even more. If I am not that hungry and am not gonna pay that much attention to it cuz I am busy doing other things, I will cook them at 350 degrees, and leave them in longer -- between 30 to 45 minutes, once again, depending on size.

You can also vary this by covering them with barbecue sauce, cream of mushroom soup, or cream of chicken soup either before cooking or half-way thru, but of course this adds calories so you must account for that if you are counting calories.

I am sorry that this is not an exact "recipe", but I don't cook by recipes -- I kind of just do it by "feel" -- what I feel like at the time, that is. LOL

Hope this helps....

Cooking Lightis a great site for lower calorie stuff with less oil, etc.

And welcome to the boards and the best of luck. It is a bit daunting when you first start out especially when, like you said, so many of us have been heavy for what seems like forever. People can relate here.

I didn't get a response fast enough but that's okay. I ended up cooking them in a skillet. I didn't have any olive oil so I just used water. I seasoned them lightly with salt and pepper and it came out delicious. I'm going to have to buy some olive oil and sea salt after I get off work tomorrow. Thanks for the tips.

Do any of you have a set diet menu plan?
If so how is it working out for you?
And may you share it with me?

I'm so afraid of falling back into my old eating habits because my weight issues are ruining my life!

So far I have cut out fast food, sweets, and soda.
I still need to give up smoking. Any tips on quitting while dieting?

I don't follow a formal diet menu plan -- I aim for 1500 calories a day, and occasionally allow myself 1800. I can eat 2000 once in a while without gaining any weight as long as I get right back on it the next day. I read a good way to jump start your metabolism and get past plateaus is to not always eat the exact same amount of calories every day, that's why I occasionally vary it.

I keep track of every bite I put in my mouth -- if I taste something while I am cooking it, I estimate the calories and add it.

I generally eat three 400 calorie meals, and 300 calories of snacks -- I vary this somewhat if one meal is less or I snack less, I may eat more at another meal, as long as the total comes out okay.

I try to eat as much whole real food as possible, and I read all food labels to see what's in it. I avoid white sugar (I use demerara sugar very sparingly in my tea), high fructose corn syrup, MSG (monosodium glutamate), and sodium nitrate and sodium nitrate in processed meats. Basically, if the nutritional info on a package is full of words I can't pronounce and/or things that I don't readily recognize as food, I avoid it. So I eat very little pre-packaged processed foods, with rare exceptions (I do eat Banquet chicken patties occasionally).

I have cereal with vanilla flavored almond milk for breakfast several days per week, and on the other days have 2 eggs fried in cooking spray and a dry english muffin, and occasionally oatmeal with a little rice milk or almond milk and 2 tsp of demerara sugar. Lunch and dinner vary, depending on what I had for breakfast, what I have in the fridge for leftovers, and what I am cooking for the family. I do try to eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, and lean meat.

My one indulgence is dark chocolate -- I buy Hershey's Special Dark candy bars, and share them with the kids. One bar is divided into 12 sections, and is 180 calories. I eat 3 sections for 45 calories, or up to 6 for 90 calories if I have enough calories left, and give the rest to a kid. I eat them 3 or 4 times a week -- like I said, it's my one indulgence, but it keeps me from feeling deprived. I put small pieces on my tongue and let them melt slowly, and make that little piece of candy last as long as possible. Occasionally I eat Tootsie Roll midgees -- they are only 24 calories each. Chocolate is my one weakness/vice that I have left, and I don't intend to give it up entirely. But I am consuming a whole lot less of it than I used to.

I am not sure if this is what you were loking for, but since you asked about a diet menu plan, I thought I'd share what I do.

I am sorry that I can't help with the smoking thing -- I quit in 1983 -- maybe someone else can help you with that.....

Those are some great tips Karen and thank you for sharing.

Do you happen to know how I may get in contact with an Admin?
I was trying to use the PM feature but it said that the Admin may
have disabled it or waiting for confirmation.
I would like to chat with others but I am not having any luck.
