Default Newbie- expat gone wild

Hi everyone-

This is my first post, and the most public I've been in admitting my weight gain. Four years ago I moved overseas, and have since gained 55 pounds. I keep justifying food by saying, "I won't live here forever, I need to enjoy it while I can". I have a very active social calendar as well, which involves dining out a few lunches per week for work meetings, and about 4 times per week for dinner. Obviously these habits aren't healthy, and I'm determined to get back to the weight I was when I first moved here.

My first plan of attack is to pack a sack lunch, and begin walking home from work. It's about an hour walk.

So I'm finally putting a stop to it, and I've got 55 to lose. I know this isn't going to be easy.

Your plan sounds wonderful! I'm sure you will be lighter and healthier with time! It may take awhile, but our pounds took months and years to add up to what they are now, and it will take months or years to get back to what we once were. So patience is required . Your plan sounds like a good,
healthy, safe, and patient plan!

Welcome, BTW! I'm a newbie too. I hope we both have good luck on our path to more healthiness!
P.S. I lived in the Netherlands as a teenager, my Dad was in the Army and stationed there. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the delicious food in Europe! Oh and the pastries, don't get me started, LOL! Are you a military spouse? I'm an Army wife....

Hi ladies, thanks for your support! The best to you both as well.

HealthierLori, I'm single, no military affiliation. Living alone is part of the problem- I'm not accountable to anyone, and can binge without anyone seeing me.

But yes, the food in Europe is irresistible! The only problem when I walked home from work for the first time- all the smells coming from the bakeries and take-out places. I need to find a new route!

I had the same problem when I lived in Germany for 6 months. All of the amazing bakeries and even the food in the grocery stores were so inexpensive- all I did was eat!

Hi Mietuk!
Sounds like you're off to a great start - those small changes can lead to big results - the support you need is here - we'll be here to cheer you on..

Glad to have you join us! There are lots & lots of different groups and forums - I'm sure you'll find some that will keep you motivated and inspired. Try the weight loss support forums, they're active and very helpful - also the Success stories are a definite must for motivation.

There are bunches of people here with more to lose and some with less - the bottom line is that we all have to do it a day at a time. The good thing is that we'll have lots of company along the way.

I've only been here since last fall, having NEVER been part of an online forum. What has been so eye-opening is how much it has helped me. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or defeated, I just log on and read some of the success stories, complete with their before & after photos - or read about others still dealing day to day with their challenges - and before I know it, the time has flown by and so have all the thoughts of going off track or giving up. It has made all the difference in my success so far.

So welcome - you've found the right place - join in by inspiring us and being inspired!

All the best - good luck with your goals,
Lee
