Hi NurseDee.
I was also a nursedee...was a nurse and everyone called me dee.
It's fantastic that you are being proactive about your health. My (estranged) husband, also a nurse, is an insulin-dependent diabetic and will eat quite a lot of simple carbs and then adjust his insulin to cover it......and he now has cardiomegaly, hypertension, etc. He's currently on 2 oral hypoglycemics PLUS insulin several times daily.
I came across an excellent article about a month or so ago....and I wish I'd bookmarked it so I could show you....but it explained how and why the current treatments for diabetes only treat the results and not the causes. The scientific explanation involved leptin, I remember, and seemed medically sound to me....and the recommendation was to treat it via diet....low glycemic diet...instead of just treating the high blood sugars...and also explained why the ADA diet wasn't really effective.
I'm losing weight on Atkins, another low carb diet.....somewhat similar to sugar-busters but with more restricted carbs. I believe sugar-busters allows complex carbs but not simple carbs, right?
So this seems to be an excellent choice of diet....not just for weight loss but also for your diabetes.
