Default A sugar-busters newbie would love to meet other sbs!

Hello, everyone!

I'm on day 3 of sugar busters and I'm having some really hard detox time right
now. It would help me a lot to hear about the progress you have made.
I lost about 75 pounds with Weight Watchers (actually, I lost about 90
and gained back the difference). I am diabetic and was doing pretty
well after spending time at a wellness center in California. Got off
of my oral meds but then got sloppy with my eating and kept justifying
a high sugar way of life to myself until I ended up on insulin. I took
it at mealtimes only but what a stupid mistake!! The weight just WON'T
come off and it's a real struggle. So I had my moment of truth and
came to the conclusion that this HAS to be my way of life if I am ever
to regain my health (I still have 160 lbs. to lose). I'm already off
my insulin (yay!) and my FBS has dropped 20+ points since I started to
a respectable 124 this morning. I expect that it will continue to go
down if I stay faithful to the plan. I just need some reinforcement
during my times of weakness! High stress lately and I'm working on that
too. There are SO MANY FORUMS here that I don't even know where to land. Does anyone in a similar situation have suggestions? It looks like a great place to hang out here. Thanks in advance, and all the best to everyone here!

Hi Dee!
Sounds like you're back on track and on your way to a healthier you - the support you need is here!

Glad to have you join us! There are lots & lots of different groups and forums - I'm sure you'll find some that will keep you motivated, inspired and entertained! There's also info and first hand advice on different eating plans like Sugar Busters and exercise to help get through the ups and downs. You might try the one on Diabetes or just click around on what looks interesting as I do.

There are bunches of people here with more to lose and some with less - the bottom line is that we all have to do it a day at a time. The good thing is that we'll have lots of company along the way.

I've only been here a few months myself, having NEVER been part of an online forum. What has been so eye-opening is how much it has helped me. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or defeated, I just log on and read some of the success stories, complete with their before & after photos - or read about others still dealing day to day with their challenges - and before I know it, the time has flown by and so have all the thoughts of cheating or giving up.

So welcome - you 've found the right place - join in by inspiring us and being inspired!

All the best - good luck with your goals,
Lee

Hi NurseDee.

I was also a nursedee...was a nurse and everyone called me dee.

It's fantastic that you are being proactive about your health. My (estranged) husband, also a nurse, is an insulin-dependent diabetic and will eat quite a lot of simple carbs and then adjust his insulin to cover it......and he now has cardiomegaly, hypertension, etc. He's currently on 2 oral hypoglycemics PLUS insulin several times daily.

I came across an excellent article about a month or so ago....and I wish I'd bookmarked it so I could show you....but it explained how and why the current treatments for diabetes only treat the results and not the causes. The scientific explanation involved leptin, I remember, and seemed medically sound to me....and the recommendation was to treat it via diet....low glycemic diet...instead of just treating the high blood sugars...and also explained why the ADA diet wasn't really effective.

I'm losing weight on Atkins, another low carb diet.....somewhat similar to sugar-busters but with more restricted carbs. I believe sugar-busters allows complex carbs but not simple carbs, right?

So this seems to be an excellent choice of diet....not just for weight loss but also for your diabetes.
