On a new quest to be healthy!

  • Hello. I am female and a freshmen in college, and I am trying to change my eating habit so I can be healthier. I wasn't watching what I was eating and gained a LOT of weight when I went to college. I am 5'10" first of all.. height makes a big difference. I jumped up from 175 pounds to 211 pounds! I was actually kind of shocked when I weighed myself finally. I skipped from being 2 pounds overweight (though I still looked quite overweight even then) to actually technically being obese by 4 pounds! But I am trying to make myself eat healthier in a way that I can keep up indefinitely so that I will not only lose the weight but just be healthier.
I have reason to be concerned. Although I am female, I gain almost all my weight in my stomach (and my breasts after that). I have very thin legs and my face is quite thin, but my stomach... I know that that is the worst kind of fat for you, which is why I really want to lose weight, for my health's sake! I am pretty sure that I MUST store a lot in my belly, because even when I accidentally lost 15 pounds 2 years ago (I was studying abroad, and the change in diet seemed to do it) and weighed 160 pounds at 5'10", I still had quite a belly and was thin everywhere else.
Well, I've decided to start getting healthier and keep it up permanently, so I started a food journal (at LiveStrong) and am joining this forum for moral support, and have recruited a close friend to exercise with me. I've been eating 2000 calories a day, and trying to exercise 500 off a day with cardio (climbing up and down stairs and walking) and eating smaller meals with more (healthy) snacks. I've easily kept the calories in control by allowing myself frequent snacks and smaller meals so I'm never hungry (eating 5-6 times a day). That's all dandy. I'm trying to figure out how to properly take up weight training currently, but basically trying not to push myself too hard, so that I can make this HABIT and keep it up indefinitely. I'm NOT on a diet, I'm trying to make a permanent lifestyle change, and it takes time to make new habits. So here I am! Um... that's about it. There's my introduction? *bows and walks away*
  • Welcome! College does funny things to you...that's when I started to gain, then lost, then had kids...

If you are interested in circuit training...check out the author Brad Schoenfeld. He used to train the Ms. Olympias. For each body part, he focuses on one muscle in a 3 muscle rotation. It's great. In college I lost 15 pounds and almost 3 pants sizes just for using him. I am giving him another try!

    Good luck!
