Default Hi from Texas & racewalking (race walking?)

Hi, I'm new here, Kimprobable told me about his forum & I thought I'd check it out. I live in TX (but I'm from NYC) and have 4 boys: 7, almost 11 and 13 yr old twins... a bunch of cats, 1 dog and 1 puppy. I also knit, sometimes weave & have an online yarn shop...

I'm about a week into racewalking training, following suggestions from a book by John Gray called Racwalking for Fun & Fitness, and I'm wondering if there are any racewalkers here? If so, I'd love to talk more... my main reason for trying racewalking over running is because I think it'll be easier on my knees & looks like fun & since it's a bit different, I thought I'd try it! I haven't really tried the racewalking style yet, I'm at the point where I'm trying to build up endurance & walk briskly ("as if I'm in a hurry") and have been alternating between that & regular walking.

If there aren't any walking threads, I'll be glad to start one.. I just haven't looked yet, but I found the running threads and will look more later.

I've got some weight to lose: I'm not sure how much, and not sure how much I actually weight, but it's in the vicinity of 200. I'd like to get closer to 140-150. I don't want to mess with any diets, mainly because I *suck* at maintenance & am hoping that exercise will help me get the weight off & keep it off. I do plan to try to eat sensibly but I'm not going to fixate on it... my initial goals are to build endurance/go further without switching to a slower walking pace and learn the racewalking style.

That's all for now!

Cheers,
Jessica

Jessica,

You may want to check down in the Exercise section for a walking thread. You've got a solid exercise plan, and it sounds like you can stick with it.

You don't have to be on a "diet", but perhaps even controlling portion sizes, or focusing on eating more whole foods would help a lot with weight loss.

You can do this! Best of success!
