I'm new!

  • hello everyone!
    i'm 14 years old, & i am overweight.
    my sister is a member on this site, & i thought i might join.

    my stats are:
    cw: 170
    gw: 140

    it's alot to lose for my age, but, i think i can do it.
    my goal is to lose all that weight by the end of summer or the begining of the next school year.

    i really don't know if it's that realistic or not though.


    i go to the gym about 4 times a week, & do cardio for 30-ish minutes, then do muscle building exercises.
    i haven't lost 1 pound.


    last year, i was at about 150.
    & i gained a lot of weight because i was on Depo-prevera. [sp?]
    it's a type of birth control.

    i hate the way i feel & i want to lose some of this weight!
    i look in the mirror & i feel sick to my stomach.


    anyways, sorry this introduction was so long, i hope i can get some good support, & motivation.

    While exercise is very important, and it's fantastic that you're working out so often, it's not the only part of the equation. I'm wondering the same things as Velveteen. Let us know Maybe we can help out!

  • i'm TRYING to count calories.
    it's very hard for me to do because my mom loves carbs, & she's the person who buys groceries.
    she tries to buy "healthy" food, like salad & fruits.

    but she also buys candy & processed food.
    so it's really hard for me to eat healthy.

    my mom isn't dieting or trying to diet.
    but she does work out with me & support me.
    she works as a stocker at walmart, so she gets alot of exercise there.

    my last check-up at the doctor i weighed about 180, so i've progressed since then, & my doctor has given me some tips to start losing weight.

    i don't know what to do about my eatting habits because everything in my house is pretty much junk.
  • This'll take some effort on your part, but I believe it would benefit you to go out grocery shopping with your mom. Maybe not every time, but every couple of times. Make a short list of the things you'd like to see in the house (More cut up veggies, more fruits available, lean meats like chicken breasts) and go with! You might be able to pick up a few healthier things.

    Also, offer to cook! There's no better time to learn how to make delicious meals than now, because soon enough you'll be out on your own making your own dinners.

    Have a quick talk with your mom about you wanting to be healthier. I'm sure she'll want to help you along! (No one needs a lot of junk in the house anyways. It's an occassional treat, not an everyday eat.)
  • the thing is, fruits & veggies are really expensive to my mom.
    she doesn't really like buying them because she's on a budget.



    i usually always cook in my house though.
    i'm actually a pretty decent cook, too.


    she knows i want to lose weight, & get healthy, but it always ends up bad & she gets upset because she thinks that she's a bad parent.
  • I'm sure she's not a bad parent! After all, she does want to help you And buying groceries on a budget is very difficult. Frozen vegetables are great to have on hand. They last longer, they tend to be a little cheaper, and they can be heated up quickly. You might also be able to look for a farmer's market in the area.

    That's great that you already cook! Just keep your eyes open for healthier recipes to try.

  • For some recipes. Take time to look around 3FC, there are recipes in all sorts of areas.

    Let's see... you'd like to lose about 30 pounds in 5 months? It's realistic, and you probably can do it, but do keep in mind that our bodies will lose at the rate that they choose to lose at. And as we get closer to our goal weight, it's sometimes harder to lose the last few pounds. So, while defintely do-able, even if you're "only" down 20 pounds by September, that's a really big deal!
  • I always found when I was younger I could drop weight more easily because it seems like as you get older it takes your body more time to respond so hopfully you will experiance the same thing. You really are doing the right thing when it comes to your health starting young means you will have a better adult life. I always found with my kids when they kept talking about something to me, I soon was on the band wagon and took them seriously when they kept at it for awhile. Be patient with your Mom she is having to make lifestyle changes too. Don't give up keep on trying, I find these kinds of things are more effective when people work together.
