Default Where to Start

Hi, I'm new to this site, I have been overweight for the last twelve years, and have tried different methods. My biggest problem is staying motivated. I struggle with depression and low self esteem, which doesn't help. My biggest concern is my Daughter. She is twelve years old with mild Cerebral Palysy and is dangerously overweight (270lbs). She is very secondary in her lifestyle. I have try to resrtict junk food, have her keep a food log, and I am always on her about exercise but I just don't get through, she has even been told by doctors that her weight could cause her to die and she still eats. I know Its bad that I can't even help her because I have no Motivation to help myself, but I am ready to try again. Any suggestions please.

Hi Lashelle &

It's wonderful that you want to change, and that you want to help your daughter.

First, this has to be a commitment to changing your life. This means that these changes go beyond motivation, go beyond temporary. This is forever. This doesn't mean that you have to turn into a health junkie overnight! It means that small, but permanent, changes will lead you, step by step, closer to your goal. Drink water in stead of sodas. Eat your daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Take short walks. Select one thing and focus on it for a week or two or until you've made it into a bit of a habit.

About your daughter: This is difficult. You truly want her to be as healthy as possible, and hounding her about her weight/exercise just doesn't work. Instead, I suggest only keeping healthier foods around. More fruits & vegetables ready to snack. Get the junk food out of the house and keep it out. (That's good to do for your health, too!) You're her mother, and you can control what is brought food-wise into your house. When you start walking or moving, invite her to join along! I wouldn't necessarily push her to focus 100% on the food/exercise, but try to make her choices easier by keeping good foods around, and making exercise a fun option.

Have a look around & post where you're comfortable!

Best of success!!!
