New to site and still fighting the battle

  • Hi all,

I am 40 and have spent my adult life fighting to loose weight with variable success. I am new to this site and I am hoping that a supportive community will help me get under way. I have been reading posts for a week or two now and have found many of the suggestions helpful.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to start things out right? What diets have worked well?

  • hi linda! well ive lost about ten pounds just by eating less. I am a huge over-eater and really have cut my portions down. I think thats a good place to start.
  • Hi Linda and

Your definatly in the right place!!!! My suggestion would be to start off slow and easy. And DRINK LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER!! Good Luck to you on your jourany. YOU CAN DO IT!
  • Thank you for the welcome!
Thank you Stacey and GodLovinGirl for the replies and words of encouragement.

Stacey-congratulations on your weight loss. Did you follow any particular plan or excercise program?

  • Hi Linda!

I agree with the others' suggestions. I lost my weight so far these past 2 months with the simple credo of eat less, exercise more. As for diets, what works for some may not work for others. You're probably the best judge of what kind of plan could work best for you. Part of the trick of finding that out is going into things with the mindset that this has to become part of your lifestyle, your routine, something that you can adapt to, or that you can make adapt to yourself.
Have you gotten any ideas yet from reading the board of what might be doable for you? Do you see yourself able to perhaps follow a certain plan or are you more comfortable with the idea of basically eating what you want but in lower portions, substitutions, lower-calorie options, etc.?
The great thing about starting slow and with some small changes is that a person can usually adapt to them fairly well and it makes it easier to make more changes later on if need be. You don't have to come out like gangbusters starting day one. Break it all into steps and mini-goals in your mind. Small changes are easier than drastic ones. Losing, for instance, 60 pounds is sort of a goal in the distance but losing, say, 5-10 pounds this month, and then 5-10 more after that and after that seems easier to attain.
Have an inner chat with yourself. Be honest with your mind, your body, your feelings, about what each is willing to do and able to handle. If any of them end up feeling too frustrated or deprived, it's a good sign what you're doing may not be the right thing for you.
  • Hi Linda!

    Welcome!

It looks like you want to lose about 50 pounds. That's VERY doable! I'd suggest walking as an exercise to get you started. That's how I lost my first 30 pounds. Walking is great because all it costs is a pair of good walking shoes!

Have you checked out Fitday? It's an program online or for your PC where you put in all the foods that you eat and the exercise that you do, and it keeps track of your progress for you. Best of all, it is FREE! (I bought the PC version for $19.99, and I LOVE IT!) www.fitday.com

Do you like a set plan, or do you like to make up your own? I'm not very good at following someone else's plan, so I made up my own based on all that I had read and by talking to people who had not only LOST weight but had KEPT IT OFF.

Setting small goals, meeting them, rewarding myself for my success with NON-FOOD "prizes" then setting a new goal has really helped me to progress!

LisaMarie71 and I are at the same weight right now and hope to reach ONEderland very soon(under 200 lbs.) We are just two pounds from our goal! That's been a big incentive for both of us!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the great suggestions
Thank you Ellie and Cheryl for the great suggestions! Reading through your posts made me realize that one of my problems when dieting is that I tend to have this all or nothing philosophy. Things ususally go along ok for a short while and then I get frustrated and give up. I will have to try and break out of that mindset and start making small changes and build up to where I want to be.

I have checked out a variety of nutrition tracking software, including Fitday, and I am currently signed up with MyFoodDiary.com.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions.
