Good plan Marci - I’m always having to adjust exercise based on how my body responds….

Mimi47 06-11-2015 08:32 AM

Marci -- Bummer about the hip and IT band issues. I just bought one of those white foam rollers so I could get in some better stretches for my hip and back, mostly caused by tennis more than running/walking, but those areas sure get tight a lot quicker than they used to when I was younger. I also use resistance bands and have found monster walks really help.

Are you still planning to do the race with your son? I just signed up for a 5k a few weeks away and am also doing that with my son -- so fun to train with him (though he's a real runner, and I'm just hoping to jog at least 75% of the way!).

Beth -- Great going on the speed walking! That is often the goal I set for walks too -- 2 miles in 30 mins. You're lucky to have found that chiropractor. I started looking for a good one a few months ago for some back issues but then got confused and then felt a little better so gave up. Just curious...does your insurance cover your visits?

So excited -- my new fitbit arrives today :) Happy moving' all!

Mimi -- We are still a "go" for the race on Sunday. It's an easy 5K so if we have to just walk, I'm okay with that, too. It's been fun getting outside and exercising with him. He's 9, so he still likes me. I only have a few years left before I become the dumbest adult on the planet. ;)

Yay! Fitbit love! I (heart) my Charge HR and the two Fitbit Ones I had before that. Be prepared -- you will be owned by a little gadget. ("Oh darn! I did stairs without my Fitbit! It doesn't count!") Hee hee!

:( sorry marci- hip flexor issues here too but the chiropractor I've started going to has made a HUGE difference. Gave me some special exercises to help "refire " the parts of the leg she doesn't think have been working correctly- thus leading to the hip flexor issue. She's a Dr. with a hockey team (lots of hip / groin injuries) so I trust her :) good luck!

Hey Beth!

Sounds like you found the right person for the job, for sure! I got a foam roller to help with these aches and pains and I have incorporated more stretching (I've always been bad about not stretching -- but at 50, I better get good at it and right now!) :D

I also swear by gentle stretching in a bath full of epsom salts. It really helps my peroneal longus (another ouchie place right now as I am prone to tendinitis).

I guess I'll be always adjusting for an older set of legs and the fact that I'm not going to be the fastest runner, not in any way, shape, or form . . . but I'm grateful I'm still able to move and groove!

mimi - yes - I found a gem...still miss my old chiro - moved to Charlotte, NC :(
& the insurance question - no, I pay out of pocket, but only b/c I have stinky High-deductable now :( I used to use our insurance - chronic lower back issues...now it's $$ out of pocket / using my HSA

Marci - hear ya on the stretching. I've always been fairly flexible and I've been warned by various Dr's to take care of this - I will want the flexibility down the road. Really trying - also, you may be interested in these stretches:

The first 2 are common - the last one impressed the heck out of my (current) chiro and she had me send her the link :)

I used my husband's FSA to pay for Ideal Protein! Worth every stinking penny!

Thanks for the link -- I'll definitely check it out!

Had a flood in my house a few days ago so been spending most of my non-work time moving the stuff in the basement in and out, but it’s done now, hoping to get a few good walks in this week during work, and back to yoga next week.

Nice to be back in your own bed, eh, Amber? You have been working out by 'boxing' & weight lifting this past while, lol. Now back to Pilates & Yoga for a bit more mentally relaxing workout.

My chiro is a saviour! He's not the bone crunching type, lol. My fibromyalgia would get the best of me without him, as he keeps all my horizontal axes on the level (hips & shoulders) and helps with proper curvature of my spine (I tend to have very military posture - not good for the shoulders & neck).

So funny Liana I am actually on my lunch break sitting at my chiropractor's office right now in the lobby. Yes he has been a godsend. In many ways.

And yes I will be happy to get back to my more normalized routine soon. The magnesium is really helping me.

I like that you work out in water – I am a water girl for sure - hoping to get in some good swims this summer.

Another good walking day - 2 miles, under 30 minutes :)

I have to get on the ball about adding in some strength exercises that incorporate body weight - ie, planks, pushups...starting to see the bird flaps under the arms & need to get serious about toning

I posted this earlier today in the 2014 starters thread.

Just wanted to share a recent "badge" I got from FitBit (my step tracking device). From October 2014 (when I first got my FitBit) to early June 2015, I walked 736 miles, which is the entire length of Italy! So they gave me the official "Italy Badge" for that accomplishment!

https://mindstar.com/scratch/Italy_Badge_sm.jpg

Since then, I am now pushing towards 800 miles total, a distance shown by starting at the red dot and walking to the outer yellow circle in the map below. By the way, the map underneath the "yellow circle of awe" (LOL) is the current image from the GOES weather satellite (which shows the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill, which just soaked Texas, as that white swirl of clouds near Dallas). So I hope all our Texas people pulled through OK. That ends our weather report!

So get out there and EXERCISE!! I am cheering all of you on!

That's awesome Avalon :D what a cool way to show it to users too

2 miles, a little over 30 minutes tonight

Buon Giorno, Signorina Alexandra! Good work on 'travelling' Italy! That's a neat feature of your fitbit.

Liana

Avalon1957 06-18-2015 09:33 AM

Way to go with the walking Beth!

And I love the Italian, Liana!

Putinka121 06-23-2015 11:48 AM

I hope this thread is the correct place to post this. I am just curious whether anyone uses the Fit Bit? I am considering buying one but I am not sure how helpful it would be for IP... Anyone love / hate theirs?
