Hi, IPers!

I hope you are all having a great morning! I was able to get up early, which felt great.

Thanks to SarahJ86 and mars783 for your responses. It gets frustrating to post in this forum and not have a response. Is that because I am using Alternatives? Should I be posting my "Daily" posts to another thread?

mars783, thanks for the encouragement to talk with my surgeon. I will put some thought in to what I should ask him.

SarahJ86, you make a great point about the hunger induced from medications. That is also something to think about.

Finale, I love your attitude. Thanks for your post about your exercise working well for you. What a great result from talking to the strangers at Ruby Tuesday. I am not sure I would have put the right spin on the situation like you did. That is awesome!

44Forever, wow! That is a terrific loss! I am really happy for you and your progress over the holiday season.

Thanks!

NO! This is the exact right place to post. Daily Chat is for ALL people following the IP way of eating whether they use IP products or Alternative to IP products.

Sometimes, especially when there are a lot of posts quickly, people may not see a post (some read all posts, some just skim). Don't be discouraged if you don't get a response.

I just went back and found your post from yesterday. I didn't really see anything specific that needed a response... I mean that you did not ask a question or request an opinion. So I am not sure what "response" you were hoping for. If you do need some specific info or have a question, maybe post that separately so it's easy for everyone to see quickly you are looking for a response.

Good Morning. This cold caused a rough night of sleep, but toward morning I actually felt it break up.

I am going to treat myself to a manicure today. Can you believe I have never had one? I am going to a "Red Carpet" affair for the community theater I volunteer for tonight. I have a new dress(because I had nothing to wear), new shoes(sparkly because they were on clearance), so I thought why not on the nails.

It is actually above freezing today, so we all better enjoy it before next week!

You're welcome, FutureFit Chick! My experience with surgeons is that they don't have expertise in nutrition but may just know that it is or isn't good idea to restrict calories, fats, carbs. I've done a few diet plans over the years, e.g. WeightWatchers, Jenny Craig, and they always had a bigger food allotment for people who were recovering from surgery.

Speedy recovery to you and hope you'll keep us posted!

FutureFitChick - I meant to respond to you yesterday and then some "stuff" got in the way (that's life!).

Of course talk to your surgeon, but when I had surgeries last year my surgeon was fine with me staying OP but thought it was a good idea to up my protein just before and after surgery. I had a large hernia, so the surgery was a little different than yours. I was also on a very low fiber diet until things got straightened out and that limited the veggies I could have so, although I was getting 4 cups in, they weren't the most satisfying as far as hunger goes.

So we added an extra unrestricted pack a few days before surgery and then afterwards, when I didn't feel like eating much, the packets were a godsend because they were easy to get down and still kept my protein up. The first couple of days post-surgery I think all I had was 4 packets a day. Protein is very important when you're healing. I even took packets to the hospital with me - so instead of crackers after surgery I took either white cheddar ridges or S&V crisps (I can't remember). Pudding and drinks I could have cold were good too since my throat was sore.

Best of luck with your surgery and do whatever your doctor recommends - IP will still be here when you are done and we'll be here to cheer you on!

Good morning all,

Just enjoyed a lovely breakfast of coffee and a cinnamon roll Quest bar. Yum!

Now I'm off to a car show DH wants to go to - we'll go on his motorcycle! That's definitely an NSV, that I can ride on the back of his bike now. Before I lost some of this weight, I felt too uncomfortable and heavy back there - it's a sport bike, so the passenger "seat" isn't really designed to hold a bigger person! Now we can ride together on nice days and I can be his biker gal, which he loves. :)

Finale, thanks for the post about exercising - still waiting for the energy to kick in, but encouraged that it's happened for you! I will keep at it. Most days I look forward to going to the gym, which is already a big change for me.

lisa32989 01-25-2014 09:15 AM

Futurefitchick
Sorry I missed your post yesterday & thanks for trying to reach out again!
You're right, it's only forever if you stick with healthy habits.

To avoid those over indulgences, I suggest making a plan for the day, either the night before or first thing, before you consume anything. I prefer the day before because then I ensure I go have everything I need for success.

Since your surgeries are orthopedic, LOTS of people have had success with being on IP pre/post OP. Your temptation to prep foods ahead-of-time is spot-on! You'll be all set with everything you need. Contrary to popular beliefs we don't need fruit, dairy or grains to survive and MDs know very little about nutrition so really aren't our best go-tos on that front. The 3 main dietary components protein, fat, carbs, are all contained in IP. What you may end up needing is an extra packet while you're healing. I KNOW we've had others who have had orthopedic surgeries. Hopefully they'll chime in with their experience. One gal had knee replacement and just kept-on losing :)

Use whichever products work best for you. Items from Nashua give you more options but if items readily available in stores work better for you, then do that. We all find that WL slows over time. That is normal. But it can/will slow more if we are not diligent in remaining 100% stuck to the P1 sheet. Little cheats can become bigger before we know it!

Sorry if you did not get the kind if responses that you were hoping for. Sometimes you may just hit a busy day. Sometimes there are people who may have posted just before or after you and if those have specific questions or issues, they may get responses. I know for me that I do not like to answer more than one in a row because then I have several entries in a row and I don't like looking to hog the site. Just me.

I think if I remember your post correctly, it seemed as if your Daily Post yesterday was more of a reflection on your part as opposed to one which was easy to respond to.

In the many months on this site, I have found the fellow IP'ers to be very supportive and informative. I would have had an incredibly hard time without them. Hang in on here and I think you will find the same!

Morning everyone!

Well, off to Mexico tomorrow morning - checked in online and printed the boarding passes this morning. It's getting exciting now, feels more "real". What is also going to feel "real" - the fact that I'll be able to fit in the seats on the plane better. That is going to be a good feeling :D

P4 has been interesting for me, I think because I know it's only temporary, I'm not really "feeling" it, if that makes any sense. I know when the time comes and I'll be at goal, I'll have to put more effort into planning meals better. For now, I've been doing more P3 than P4 and very much looking forward to getting back at P1.

Also, for the first time in many, many years, I started doing a bit of a "circuit" for exercise. We're doing a Biggest Loser challenge again at work and although I'm not really OP right now for my trip, I still signed up because it will go to mid March. One of the challenges this week was to do 15 minutes of exercise so I spoke to a co-worker who's a personal trainer and she gave me some toning exercises for my arms (something I really wanted to work on). I did those then decided to add in some sit ups and planking. I can't believe that I can actually do sit ups!!! I was a bit stiff and sore the next day but wow - I did 2 reps of 25 each and I can actually do them...amazing for me!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful IP week - keep at it all, the rewards are amazing! I will be back in a week - hopefully a lot more tanned than I am now :D

You and I share the lack of such treats. I started just last year and I have to add that although a manicure is a special treat, I have become addicted to pedicures. The place I go does a massage as well as heated paraffin wrap for the feet and legs. It is an astonishing relaxation time - there is something in the feet that goes straight to the brain during a massage. If you have time, try that as well!

Not sure I am ready for the pedicure, but it may be a summer present. I am a nail biter, so have been working really hard to not bite them. They are looking much better so maybe a manicure will help them stay that way!

Good Morning everyone. So yesterday I had a cheat day. I had pizza for lunch, and a cheeseburger for dinner, and cheese for a snack. Don't really feel bad about it…i.e. - not beating myself up over it.

But more notably, all those carbs gave me crazy bad indigestion. Back on IP today. Easy to do when all those carbs give you indigestion like that!

I'm doing my best to be well-prepared for a busy day today. My youngest has a volleyball tournament all day. I made up some zucchini muffins with the maple oatmeal packet and packed a salad, so I'll be good for lunch. Then tonight, I have a pageant to attend (I volunteer with the state Miss America organization) and there is always a big after party...this one will be a breakfast buffet. I'm a little scared going into it, since it'll be my first one while on IP. But, I'm going to eat my snack prior to the pageant and then use the buffet as my dinner. I have someone with me that has lost 45 pounds on IP and is on maintenance, so she will be a huge help. They'll be things there I can eat and I'll just do my best. Eggs, meat (probably not lean protein, but I'll do what I need to), hopefully some veggies. I'll be good...and if there isn't anything, I'll just eat something when I get home, but it'll be super late. It's either that or rush a dinner in between the tournament and the pageant and then sit there not eating anything tonight with everyone. Praying for good options! At least I'll have support.

I am such a different type of person than I was three months ago, it's amazing to me what weight loss can do for your attitude.
Stay on track and watch the great results

finale 01-25-2014 01:53 PM

My office is also having a biggest losser competition and our official final weigh in was suppose to be on january 2 and no go.
My boss told everyone he would do anything he could to beat me. So he said he was getting back on IP to get more weight off and win the competition. So last Monday I took my scale to work and asked him if we could do the weigh in then, and he said no due to drinking too much beer on Sunday. So no weigh in yet...I really, really, want to win but I am hoping Monday will be the weigh in and we are doing percentage of weight loss. I will keep you all posted.
I also registered for my running of my first 10 k in Fargo, ND this May and I am really excited. Now to stay on track and keep training....

coffeebean 01-25-2014 03:16 PM

Another cold and snowy day here. It is a good thing I am 100% OP or I would be munching my way to added weight. We were suppose to go out of town to celebrate youngest daughter birthday but got an hour into our trip had to come back home. The roads were icy any we couldn't see the cars in front of us. The snow was blowing so hard. My first thought was I am going off plan today and eat some sweets. Luckily that was a passing thought and I am once again in control of my eating.

drd1961 01-25-2014 03:33 PM

When I drove into Champaign this afternoon, the roads were terrible. Amazing how so little snow can make such a mess when blown by 40 mph winds.

I have to drive back in for my gala later. I hope there is food that I can eat, but I plan on eating a salad before I go just in case. Never go into an uncertain situation hungry.

With utmost respect, I would have to disagree with the premise that 'since it's orthopedic', and since 'lots of people have had success' is a reliable way to predict success for any one person with a specific surgery.

Wound healing is a complex & labor-intensive cellular process. Different surgeries have different inherent risks to healing. For instance, a joint replacement is different than a ligament reconstruction that might involve tissue grafting, to name just one. As I've read on this forum, restrictive dieting can have unexpected side effects, even dramatic hair loss as I've experienced (temporary!). And each person might have different risk factors that can complicate healing, such as history of smoking or diabetes and so on.

That is why I would run it past my surgeon. They certainly aren't experts on nutrition but they are well-versed in what helps or hinders surgical healing for the operations they do, at least the well-trained ones. I guess we can agree to disagree :)

Ok I'm sorry but I need to vent somewhere and you guys are always really good about just reading and helping when you can. My husbands family was doing a dinner for a member of the family and they all wanted to go Thursday night and my husband and I had plans....I went to spanked and he watched my friends kids....While today his brother called due to the two of them going to a movie today or tonight and his brother says his brother is in town due to plans cancelled so they were wondering if we could all go to dinner tonight. That sounds great, so he was checking with his mother....Then he says that everyone went out on Thursday but us anyway....This triggers something in me and it just makes me mad and hurt. This is something my family is good for and I hate being left out....It's my hang up and no one else's///I am trying so hard to become a healthier less agitated person....I don't know how to get over the feeling of hurt and being left out. My husband never gets irritated or hurt by anything and I wish I was more like him. I said what is the point of going to dinner tonight when they already went.....I think its stupid....My poor poor husband can't understand why I am so hurt and this is my issue no one else's.....I am trying so hard to change this part of myself but I am still stuck and need help.
I am someone that is use to my family doing this to me, and it really hit a spot with me and I dont know how to not react this way.....Help if you can.....

Actually it sounds as though they WANT to see you...!! And the problem was you already had plans?? If I am understanding... There was no reason for all the rest of them NOT to get together ...Just because you were unable to go does not mean they should have done nothing that night. Look at it this way...that brother is willing to give 2 nights to try to see the whole family on this trip. If there was no chance you would have gotten to have a second chance at a get together...would you have been OK with that??? I come from a huge family...and trying to get 1 night that works for everyone is RARELY possible. I'm not sure we could find a second night that works any better than another in our family....and some times we have to do smaller groups to see everyone.Take what you can get...life is too short!!!

I am not sure how to respond but because I have been through falling off IP, I am going to respond and hope that you do not take it wrong.

I had a period in abut the third month when I fell off and it took me a long while to get back on. There was not a day that went by that I was not bothered by filling on up carbs, but I could not find the mental metal to rein it in. I was very disappointed in myself.

We are all different, but there is some concern for me in seeing you go off so radically so soon into the program and seeming not so concerned. To me, and I repeat only to me, the fact that you are going back on IP only because the carbs gave you indigestion. Maybe you are writing tongue in cheek and being funny/sarcastic and I missed that.

This program is very challenging to follow religiously, but when it is done that way, the results are fantastic. My experience shows that a near total dedication to the program is what it takes to succeed over the long term. There are NO 'cheat days' in Phase 1. The ability to get into ketosis requires adherence to a strict program.

If one's mind is not ready, really ready, this program can be almost impossible to make work.

I am guessing that this reply may make you upset with me. My intent is to help as many have helped me in the past. If I offend you, I will offer my apologies in advance but hope that maybe you can see that there is some basis to try to get this information to you from experience.

Hope everyone's weekend is going well so far.

Went to Toronto this morning to pick up my sister and stopped at the low carb grocer! It was a little overwhelming in there but I got WF ketchup, Alfredo sauce and chocolate peanut butter and some protein pancake mix that fits within protocol for an alternative packet! Can't wait for breakfast tomorrow!

The roads were terrible and what would normally be a 45 minute drive home took over three hours. So many cars in the ditch, accidents, jack-knifed transport trucks... Really wish people would just slow down when the roads aren't good. I was sure glad when I finally pulled in to my driveway! What a stressful three hours!!

Tomorrow's agenda is grocery shopping... My veggie drawer in the fridge hasn't been this empty since pre-IP! I'm literally down to a head of lettuce and nothing more. So up early and off I'll go. :)

Have a great holiday in Mexico Jo:):)

We were supposed to head out to meet friends for dinner but roads were too bad out their way. DH and I took the kids to Mc D's - where they get ten fries and apple slices with their meal and we throw the rest out. Having struggled with obesity my whole life I'm try my best try my bet to create a different experience for my kids. We had tea and then we went bowling. Lots of fun.

On a different note twice this week my 5 yr old daughter has called me fat. Funny enough, 90 lbs ago at my highest she never said a thing!

Kimmie - thank you for saying that. It is very sweet to relieve me of the angst.

I have struggled with this since August and only when I dedicated myself to IP 100% was I able to see and feel progress. If in any way my experiences can aid someone else on IP, I am going to try.

Best of luck, fingers crossed for you!
