How did/do you determine your goal weight?

  • Ok I want to know how your goal weight was determined? Is it what you personally want to weight by Phase 4 and into maintenance?
    Was it based on gaining some weight back when we get into a maintained phase for a little wiggle room?
    Or was it recommended by your Dr. based on height and all of that stuff?

    I am just curious to see how you decided what you want. I am comfy around 130-140 lbs. that is my comfort zone. Anything less than 130 is too thin for me personally. I am rethinking my goal weight to 135? is it wise to change it or just go with one number and shoot for the stars?
  • As a person who has been overweight since childhood, I couldn't tell you a 'healthy' weight. My nutritionists have always said that at 5' tall you should be 100lbs (+-15lbs). Then for every inch, add 5 lbs. So i'm 5'9 and that would put my 'healthy range' between 130-160. That is because the spot on weight would be 145. So i did the range. Get it? When you calculate your BMI online and I put in 5'9 at 145, my BMI was 21.4...which is normal range. If I put in 160lbs, it put my BMI at 23. Which is close to 'overweight'. THe BMI website I used is below:

    Thank you for the link!! I did mine and the "normal zone" for me a 5'4" is 119-135 lbs :blink: that is a huge range. SO I guess I need a happy medium then
  • My coach suggested 138 because said that would be a healthy BmI for me. I told her I really want to be under 135 and she said we can set my goal as 132. But I want to give myself a little wiggle room in case I gain 2-4 pounds so in my mind its 130.
  • I went by previous weight. BMI doesn't work for me...I have a very large frame and I am very muscular under all of this fat...lol....I went down to 140 in my late teens after a bout of pneumonia and my ribs and hip bones were sticking out so much they could have taken an eye out. I look awesome in the high 150's so set my goal to 150 to account for a bit of gain while transitioning into maintenance.
  • My doctor and I went by a body fat %. My last DEXA scan threw my lean body mass at a really high ratio of nearly 71% and my body fat at a relatively low ratio of 29% despite how much I weigh (my fat ratio for my weight should be closer to 40-45%, but apparently I have what is considered a mesomorph body type). That means I only have roughly 65 pounds of fat on my body and close to 159 pound of lean body mass. And....that alone puts me over the "normal" BMI. Given that women need to maintain no less than 10% body fat and that I really don't want to lose muscle mass (since that can attack my heart), I need to ideally be no lower than 174...but I am tweaking that a tad and aiming for 170.

    Sigh. Blasted muscles. I so want a normal BMI...but I guess I will settle for healthy. At least I appear to weigh less than I really do.
  • When starting IP I wanted to set my goal at 135, but my based on my lean mass, my coach suggested I shoot for 150. I was not satisified when I hit 150, so I reset my goal to 145. I could easily lose 10-15 maybe even 20 more. I figure at this point, I'm just going to set goals in 5 pound increments until I'm happy with how I look.
