Default Phase 1 question...

I am on 4 packets a day from my coach. He said I'm on an alternative plan because I am over 240. I notice by carb intake is around 40-60 carbs a day. I eat only the approved meats veggies etc. My calories are never over 900. Will this carb intake hinder my weight loss and kick me out of ketosis?

What are you eating that has so many carbs? Are you doing restrictive packets? I looked at My Fitness Pal and it looks like I take in 30-40 a day, so I would say you should be fine.

I rarely eat a restricted. I just read somewhere on here that 40 carbs could kick you out.

You body needs some carbs to function. Your brain's fuel is carbs. The plan is created for optimal results. I think you should trust your coach and know that the program works, best when it is worked to the letter.

It seems like there is some inconsistency in the coaching. I'm over 240 but only on 3 IP packets a day. I was told eating the restricted packets are important and your body needs cards.
I would trust your coach and as long as your losing weigh that's great.

He said he doesnt want me to get flabby skin. I am wondering if this is even a real reason.

There is GREAT inconsistency! I was also told to be on 3 packets/day NO restricteds. It was pointed out to me here that this isn't the generally held belief (or proper protocol, idk)- I am in the process of switching coaches. I have been having 5/ including 1 restricted and I feel SO much better, my skin isn't dry and cracking anymore and I am still losing weight. I have actually lost a little more since eating a little more.

My starting weight was 311. I was at 286.4 this morning after 44 days. So it it is roughly .5lbs/day so far. Lisa posted a scale for me - let me find it and post it and you can discuss it with your coach. brb

This is what she gave me that led me to interview at other (not so nearby) clinics and break up with my current coach:

And here are the weight ranges for extra packets (from an IP coach-friend, straight out of the coaches' manual)
201-240 pounds = 4 packets/day
241-280 pounds = 5 packets/day
281-320 pounds = 6 packets/day
Of course, still only 1 of those is restricted

When I questioned my then-coach about it he said that he beleived that those guideline weights were "goal" weight. My question to him was: Who on earth has a "goal weight" of 320 lbs?

Thanks clbott I will mention it to my coach. I recently switched and she seems well informed, way more than the other one I started with. It would make sense to be on an extra packet or so if heavier and then reduce as you lose weight. I am a,so exercising 5 times a week.

I'm glad clbott found and shared the extra packet info.

If you're doing 4 packets and still on P1, you're fine for ketosis (remember to look at NET carbs: total minus fiber)

You said something about alternative plan. Are you adding the dairy, fruit, and grain 3x/day? That is is the alternative plan usually given to people with diabetes. This plan purposely keeps people out of ketiosis and slows weight loss.

If you are just adding 1 packet to the P1 normal protocol, you'll do great!

Re: restricteds
Some coaches do not keep current with IPs current guidelines. They used to not allow people for the first 2-4 weeks. Now they start people on restricteds from the beginning. Coaches doing it the old way aren't keeping current.

I want to rephrase my statement if you will allow. I should have said "ideal weight " not goal weight. There are plenty of people striving to reach 320 and I wish them the best of luck.

What I said may have sounded rude and I don't mean to offend anyone. No one said anything to me about it, but its been bothering me since shortly after I said it and I wanted to own up to my mistake. - Courtney
