Default Ideal Potein and an auto immune disorder

Ok I have a friend that has RA and is on prednisone (which if you don't know makes you gain wieght like crazy). She wants to lose wieght but thinks it wont do any good until she can stop the prednisone. So my question is does anyone know if following IP can help with auto immune disorders. My thought is that if it does then starting the diet might help her to get off the predisone.

I can give you my husband's experience- he has to take oral cortisone, which is also a steroid. His losses have been very slow- in seven weeks he has lost about 17 lbs, needs to lose about 100 more. I have lost 32 lbs, also need to lose about 100 more. We go see his endocrinologist next Wednesday and we will find out where his cortisol levels are, I suspect they will be high. So, he is losing, but not very fast, and not at all in his face.

The good news is that he is sleeping a lot better, doesn't really need his c-pap anymore (thought he still uses it) and has a lot more energy. If your friend has reasonable expectations regarding weight loss, the other benefits probably still make it worth doing. I would think she would especially benefit from the reduced inflamation. And as you say, she might find that she improves to the point that the pred can be stepped down. It's worth a shot- and if she doesn't want to make the financial commitment, she can always try a week or two of alternatives and see how she feels. I don't have any health issues (fortunately), and I am amazed by how much better I feel physically since starting this diet.

Steroids really do a number on your body!

Warmhearted,
I have Lupus and RA also on prednisone and several other medications, I saw my RA doctor and told him that I had started the SB diet and he was thrilled and looking forward to seeing my results. He hopes that with time we can reduce the prednisone and the other medications that I am on. So yes the prednisone does make you hungry and you do gain weight on it. I am proud to say that I am 3 days shy of finishing phase one of the South Beach diet and have lost 8 pounds. She should talk to her doctor but I say go for it. Good Luck
