Thank you so much for the advice Sunny! It has definitely been at the forefront of my mind that maybe my body has just had enough of this for now, and maybe I should call 83 pounds good and call it a day. I am 38, and I'm approaching the weight I had in my early 20's - but this doesn't mean I'm going to look like I did back then. Mostly, I am mentally very attached to getting into the 'normal' BMI category for my height, even though I know BMI is outdated and doesn't take into account things like muscle mass and body frame. I've just been overweight most of my life, and I'd like to be able to point at some objective metric and say, 'Look! That says I'm not overweight!'.

But just wanting it isn't going to make it happen. I have to face the reality that my body just might be sending me a message.

I have my weigh-in tomorrow, and today is my third day without the restricted foods, which should be enough to tell me if this is going to work or not. When I weigh myself in the morning, and when I go for my weigh in, if I don't see positive improvement, I may start phase 2.

Thank you so much for the response. It really does help a lot.

Thanks, Jenny!

I've been adding in more and more exercise as well - low resistance exercise bike - nothing approaching full cardio. I'm actually concerned that the reason I'm not seeing the scale move may very well be that I'm gaining muscle.

How long do people stay in phase 2? I thought it was only 2 weeks.

I love reading the threads they are always full of useful information. I have reached my 90% as of today, but my WI is on Friday so i am going to stay on phase I until than, and Saterday I will start phase II. I am very excited. I am not sure why because the packets are so easy and phase II means I will have to cook more food. I guess I am excited because it is like knowing you have run a marathon and the last couple of miles are insight. I thought losing weight would feel good, but I really think that knowing that I stuck with something and am completing a goal has really helped my psychological out look about myself, and what I can do if I make a commitment.

Thanks for everyones post, it is so rewarding to be apart of this group.

Hi Ginger,

It's great to "see" you. It looks like you have shed your winter coat! You look so different!
Congratulations on the great job you have done. Welcome to phase 2. You will do great. Please join us on the "Life after Phase I" thread too.

Congrats!! Life after Phase 1 is amazing (the thread too! hehe) and life after Phase 2 is even better! And Phase 3 - well I think you get the picture. Way to go!

Ok..I have not read the entire thread..so this may already be answered.

My question is...Does this diet have an end? I read a few ppl say that they are going off plan, etc. and a few others that say they are in maintenance, but sounds like they are still spending the money and such to keep up the high protein.

So, if I were to choose to do the IP plan, and I get to my goal weight, do I ever get to go back to a more average diet? Or to maintain do you continue eating the same Protien with Minimal carbs?

carlasherea 04-20-2011 11:34 AM

I had an interesting comment from my Sister-in-law yesterday. As we were packing her house up for her move, she said "I miss the old you, where we would sit down and eat junk together!" That was a huge compliment. She sees that I have made a lifestyle change and as hard as it is, it pushes her to be better. When we had a break, instead of reaching for the bag of Doritoes (which were calling my name all day) I had a protein bar and she had a protein shake! Job well done!! I also got 6 hrs of continuous exercise. The only downfall was when they ordered in pizza for dinner and I wasn't prepared. Seeing as how I am on maintenance I had a couple of pieces, but am back to protein and veggies today!

Have a great day. I am excited because I am only 2 mo. away from keeping this weight off for 1 year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes and no.
What they call "Phase 4" is actually a maintenance plan. You're in it (theoretically) forever, but in reality, it's just a guideline for a healthy eating lifestyle. I believe you start reintroducing carbs in phase 3. You get 'cheat days' in phase 4 as well, where you can eat whatever you want, and a plan for recovering so you don't gain weight from it.

Phase 4 does not officially contain any IP prepackaged foods, but my center, at least, allows you to continue buying them if you choose to incorporate them in your diet. But you don't HAVE to.

Hope that helps! (I'm still in Phase 1, so, someone who's actually finished might have better info than mine.) :-)

Sleep

Is anyone else having a hard time staying asleep at night? It seems I'm in at 10:30 and up at 3am. Then I am twilight or awake until 5:30.

Hi there,
Yes I am on about the same schedule of waking up and doing it at least 3-4 nights a week.
The nights I sleep better are the days I get up extra early and expend massive amounts of physical and mental energy and then do not go to bed til 11:00 to midnight.
Any other thoughts from other people ?
P.S. I had just sent you a PM, Mary

lesley- i so agree. life gets in the way of smart choices. ticks me off but it happens. i figure if i can ride the rail 80% of the time that is maintenance for me. but of course my math is never quite right!!! lol!

Failing to plan, is planning to fail or something like that. So true . I need to really not get relaxed about this or I'm going to gain it all back in maintenance.
Thanks everyone , I learn so much. I am enjoying this journey and I know one night of a cheat is not going to make me gain 35 lbs back, but I'm just mad that I let myself mentally give up for a few seconds of wonderfulness. Tomorrows a new day!!

momofive- it causes me alot of anxiety as well, but i do feel myself relaxing and that needs to get put in check! do i eat something just once or not, and what if i gain it back kind of thing all the time. as far as a few seconds of wonderful, not me- i'm going to get a buzz and keep it all evening, heck with a few seconds of fun before i swallow the food. i'd rather have a drink than food. sick isn't it? i am struggling with this hole my dad left in my heart, but i know food and drink won't fill it. i just want a mini mental break somedays.... it'll get better, tho. i just have to tuff it out!

This is truly a matter of more will equal less.
Do phase II right away, so you can get to ph. III and start having the larger breakfasts.
I lost my last 7 lbs AFTER I left ph.1. I've lost most of it in 3 and believe it or not, I lost surprise weight in phase 4.
Gals and Guys, please chime in here! Good luck and keep in touch please.

my common sense tells me that the body adapts so easily that we have to throw it a curve ball to keep things confused. staying on a strict schedule has it's benefits, like personal control, but then again, your body knows exactly what to expect and it is going to save itself from your madness! i've read alot about interval eating where you cycle low to high days to keep the metabolism from adjusting. and my experience is after having a cheat or two is i stayed the same weight then lost a couple. different for everyone, but if nothing else works i'd try adding a higher intake day at random intervals. :)

wouldn't you guys think the extra protein, especially if your product has a good amino acid profile would promote healing? i would certainly supplement with a quality whey product even if i upped my calories.

my life maintenance plan is low carb most of the month with my protein breakfast drink (nectar by syntrax which is only about a buck a serving) a mostly meat lunch and meat and veggie supper. 1 or 2 times a month i expect to let myself have a more carbohydrate type meal or some social drinking. we'll see how it works out..... it seems similar to what darbs and some others seem to be doing and maintaining just fine.

i'm taking a poll!

i'm taking a poll! i want to know how many of you have ever decided you just had to have a bite of something seriously OP.... maybe a cinnamon roll, brownie, whatever..... so you chomped into it, chewed and felt it all in your mouth, tasting the wonderful delight.... then suddenly realized you felt like some kind of weird perverted mad woman and spit it out like poison in the garbage?

anyone?

(please dear lord let someone be in as bad of shape as i am! :dizzy:) could it possibly be like when bill clinton said ya, but i didn't inhale? :D

Bra

The best way to look great is to purchase a new bra that fits, lifts, and separates. Often times we neglect this all important implement. Always try your clothes on over a new bra to make sure you're not doing the sausage roll jog bra look.

OMG yes.

Buying a bra that fit me properly was the best new clothing purchase I made on this diet.

And that's saying something, as clothes that fit really make a difference in how you look. It's expensive to replace your wardrobe, especially when you're losing multiple sizes, but, I strongly recommend buying at least a few pieces that fit at every stage.

Especially a bra that fits. :-)

Losing Weight in Phase 2 and 3

For those of you who have gone into Phase 2 and 3, and continued to lose weight - how long did you stay in those phases? I assumed it was only two weeks in each, but I reread the docs and realized that that's the minimum. So, when you say you've lost weight in Phase 2 or 3, do you mean during those minimum two weeks, or are you staying there longer?

Lisaf373 04-21-2011 08:42 AM

The Crazies

Another "is it just me?" question:

Do you find you make yourself crazy over whether or not the scale is moving? My mood and general state of mind these days is so dependent on what that number says. I drive myself and the people around me crazy when things are not progressing as fast as I'd like.

I know I need to stop (I'm trying to start transitioning off asap, because I can't do this anymore) but I'm wondering if it's just me, or if this whole weight-loss process is as maddening to everyone else as it is to me.

I lost weight in both phases. I went into Phase 2 way too early to stay only 2 weeks, so I stayed for at least 6 weeks. I broke through a bad plateau and continued to loose. IMHO, anyone can handle PH 2 for as long as they need it. I worked PH 3 for the recommended two weeks, but I still eat the PH 3 breakfasts in maintenance.

When I was first starting this diet, a friend pointed out to me that this is not the kind of diet you can cheat on. With a ketosis-based diet, either you're on it or you're not. I took that idea and ran with it, and managed to convince myself that if I DID have carbs, I would make myself sick, either in the moment, or in three days when my body kicked back into ketosis. Using that, I managed not to cheat with anything carb-like. I've had things like cheese or nuts, which are probably just as bad, and definitely set me back, but no carbs or sugars.

That said, the best advice I ever got from my doc/councilor was, "Don't make yourself crazy."

Hi Lisa, Look in the "Phases" Sticky at the top of the main page. I think its one of Jordanna's posts that has the pdf files for each of the phases.

HI Rondar,

I have done that, with cheese, or a 1/2 tsp of peanut butter, and NOT spit it out... and have no gain the following days.... just stay strict the next day, it works for me... and still in ketosis :)

I figure this is going to take me a while and I have to make it liveable... It may slow me down a bit, but if a little cheese or nuts gets me through and prevents a serious cheat, it was worth it. I agree with Tim on Project Runway... "Make it work people!"

I am back from my last planned cheat until goal. Wow crazy ride these 8 months have been. I lost 52 pounds in the first four and then only 20 in the last 3 3/4 months (But have been to Las Vegas, a cruise, Finger Lakes wine tour, Atlantic City...wow). Now all of my trips are done until July and I better be at maintenance.

I plan to have about 7-8 perfect weeks now! I am 4 pounds from my original goal, but I want to lose another 12-16 after that.

Keep up the great work.

I have learned so much about life and myself through every part of this process. Food is not scary and cheats are not cheats...just life!

No more ALL or NOthing mentality for me.....plan it, enjoy it, then focus on lifelong eating changes.

I DO!~!!! quite frequently actually. My husband and children have gotten used to me spitting out food. It's like I need to convince myself that it doesn't taste as good as I think it will and then I am able to quit obsessing about it.

Thanks to the fabulous advice I received here, I started Phase 2 today.

I had an unexpected drop this morning, after I 'slipped' and added in some extra oil on my salad last night, and added a bar back in - I think it's true that the body hangs on to fat if it's not getting enough calories. I'm now only 5 pounds to my goal, and I feel good about starting to transition off.

I've also got a planned cheat this weekend, who knows, that may kick my metabolism up to get me through the last five.

(Calories in - Calories out) is only the very beginning of the equation. It's much, MUCH more complicated than that. Thanks for reminding me to eat. :-)

Welcome back!!! hope you had tons of fun....AND WOW.... look at your pictures you look FABULOUS!!!! :congrat:

Missed my weigh in today...I weighed on my scale and I'm 145.5 (1.5 more pounds to be at 40 lbs lost since Jan 14th) super happy with that. I'm not really sure what phase I'm in mostly phase I or modified phase I. I can't really seem to get the phase II correct, I know it's not hard It's just easier the way I'm doing it I guess even though I know it's not 100% but I'm still loosing weight.

I need to just put my mind to it and do it so I can move to 3 then 4.....Funny when I started I thought phase I would be the hardest....IMO It's the easiest.

Have a good evening all!!!!

Thanks, weird but I have learned a ton about myself on this journey. I used to just be 100% perfect or "heck with it...I messed up...I'm done!" But my mindset has changed so much. I learn a ton from this website and all the wonderful women here.
