broken bones and healing while on IP

  • I am new to posting here but have a question. I have been on IP since the first of October and have lost 30 pounds - YAY! I have 10 more to go.
    However, I fell two days before Christmas and broke my knee cap. I am wondering if anyone else has been on protocol with a broken bone and should I be concerned about being on a restricted diet in regards to healing?

  • oww Barb: I do atkins, not IP, but I think if you are nutritionally balanced on vitamins and minerals (and I assume it is!) I don't think low carb should be a problem. In fact, since you will be more sedentary, staying low carb will be a big help so you don't gain a lot of weight while healing. If you don't get much fiber in your meal plan, you may want to add a fiber supplement since lack of exercise can cause problems with contstipation. Hope you heal well!
  • Barb, please speak to your Orthopedic or consult with a Sports Medicine Dr. Do not rely on this forum. Nutrition absolutely has an impact on bone healing (injury and rehabilitation). My ISSA manual says...

    "Too few calories during recovery from injury can prevent an individual from getting healthy. Specifically, during acute injury, energy needs are increased. In fact, BMR (metabolism) may increase 15-50% based on the severity of the trauma....If a client is eating based on hunger alone, it's quite likely that he or she may under eat during recovery, leading to losses of lean mass, poor healing and slow progress."

    Indications include absolutely striving for 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight minimum, increase omega 3/decrease omega 6, avoid vitamin E supplementation, increase consumption of nuts, seeds and olive oil (anti inflammatory) and nutrients (A, B, C, D, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese and zinc) are important in cases of injury. Arginine and Glutamine have been shown to speed the healing process.

    The IP low carb protocol isn't the issue, its the low caloric intake. Work with your coach to move to a Phase that provides you with the additional 15-50% (soft issue injury is closer to 20 with major surgery and trauma closer to 50) more calories and sufficient protein you need for proper bone remodeling.

    I know this is pretty late because I haven't been visiting the message board much, but I had a stress fracture in my heal when I began IP and there were definitely some indications that the diet delayed the healing but it did heal. Unfortunately, I had 6 weeks with no treatment other than me not stepping on it because it really hurt (bad doctor) and then, I spent another 7 weeks in the boot. The good news is that I was able to start dancing as soon as I got out of it and because I had lost so much weight it felt so easy to dance! I would do everything the same even knowing that it probably took a few extra weeks of healing because it was worth it to feel "recovered" in two ways!
