How did it go Georgia?

geoblewis 07-24-2013 06:09 PM

I did it! Woo hoo!

Not something I'm going to do all the time! I think I'll save the 36-hour fasts to cover my backside when I've had a day or two of overeating. And I really was a piggy after the fast was over. Didn't go over my RMR, but still, WOW! I can eat!

KTucke7 07-25-2013 09:10 AM

LOL That's always been my problem, I can really eat! If you didn't go over RMR all is well though. Nice going :)

Hello fellow IFers. I've been skipping breakfast, basically. Then I read a recent study on the dangers of skipping breakfast. I'm not sure if this has been discussed here because I haven't checked in here for a while and if I missed it, then I apologize. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_3635145.html Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

luckymommy, I wish I could completely understand this skipping breakfast/not skipping breakfast controversy. Both sides of that coin are very vehement. Right now I'm not IFing, but I have before and I really like that empty feeling during the day and have wanted to get back to doing it again. But I don't want to go without breakfast if it will somehow be detrimental or make me eat more later (I don't buy the stuff about metabolism, but that's just me). But if it's NOT detrimental and in fact helps us to stay slim and has other benefits, then I'd like to commit back to skipping breakfast! Frankly, I don't even like breakfast food that much, but I have gotten used to just eating in the morning, which is a hard habit to kick once you get into that again *sigh* :)

You can find a study to support whatever you want to believe, if you look hard enough. In this study, we don't know if they measured cholesterol levels etc. before and after the study along with a lot of other variables.

As for myself, I've been doing IF and "skipping breakfast" for almost 3 years now, and my cholesterol and sugar levels have never been better.

luckymommy 07-26-2013 01:36 PM

Thanks for your input olehcat and KTucke7. I think I'm going to disregard this study because after reading more about it, I realize that it has a lot of flaws. I don't know if they took into account that many people who skip breakfast tend to overeat the rest of the day and there are other unknown variables as well. I do IF if it feels right that day. If I want food, I'll eat it and if I don't, I just listen to my body. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.....and I'm losing weight, which I KNOW is beneficial. :)

I didn't read the study but I doubt there is anything new there. Skipping breakfast is associated with obesity so it should come as no surprise that it is also associated with heart disease.

They key word is associated.

If you look at the dietary habits of people who tend to skip breakfast they are not as good as those who tend to eat breakfast.

Also in the article people who ate just before bed had more health problems. Same thing - dietary habits.

Intermediate Fasting from a past aggressive eater

Hi there.

So Friday was 2 weeks for me being on intermittent fasting. I have lost a total of 18 pounds. I have finally discovered how much my body can live on, and how much my body really needs.

I have been able to deter myself from really bad food that I have never been able to before, and on the days that I am not fasting, I am not eating as much because I don't feel the need! It is amazing how I have found a new found land.

I can't say that I have not had any struggles though. I no longer can eat anything too heavy or I end up getting sick to my stomach. Also, there has been some hard days like I had to go on a business trip that of course involved lots of alcohol. Take my word for it, always try to eat before you drink any alcohol.

That is my update. It is working for me, and take my advice and stop listening to everyone else. I am not dying, and I am feeling great. I was dying by gaining the weight and continuing to gain weight.

What is the difference? Why is everyone so focused on starving? When they seem to not really be focused on over eating as much?

Is like me at 286 pounds, oh my goodness I better eat 1200 calories today or I will go in starvation mode oh no..... but then the next day... I didn't mind inserting a 1000 calorie meal in one sitting.

What's the difference?

So who else is tired of listening? I am. I am doing this my way, and IF is working for me, and I am doing it and I am going to lose every single ounce of my weight!!!

Sorry... for the vent.

Congrats on your success, Tonya. You had amazing results.

I am reading more and more on IF and exploring the idea.

Today, I did cardio after a 17 hours fast and it went well. It's true that the clinical results on IF totally turn common wisdom on its head.

tonyaap20 07-28-2013 09:07 PM

Thanks Matisse. I do recommend it. Unfortunately, the hardest part is there is not a lot of "real life" support out there at home. That is why I try to keep a blog and post, and my husband luckily supports me and understands how this helps even though he couldn't do it if he tried.

People can be so judgmental, and I think that is why this type of diet can end up so unsuccessful for some people... :/

I am looking up though, and I know it works. It's almost like getting off of a drug. haha

I listened to this last night, Tonya. It may help you : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZZWOXhoFpo

There are pictures of his wife's transformation in the video. Amazing!

I enjoyed the video, thanks for posting :)

I have a question for all you IFers...

Does anyone "reverse" IF? Most of what I read about IFing is the skipping breakfast, eating later in the day variety.

I find that my hunger is most rampant earlier in the day. I have my hunger down to clockwork, actually: I am hungry when I wake up, get hungry again at 11 and again at 3.

I'd prefer to shove all of my eating to those earlier time slots, and I've been able to do this when I went to Anime Conventions this spring. I had breakfast when I woke up, a large lunch and then a 200ish calorie snack at around 3 or 4. I was then fine for the rest of the day and found it much easier to manage my hunger this way.

I don't live on my own just yet, so I am usually tailoring my eating to the whims of my family. However, when left to my own devices I would much rather eat the way I did when I was away.

Is anyone else like this? Does anyone know of any places where I could do a bit of research on the way my body works?

Thanks for this site. Watched last night and wrote down some of the info. Very helpful.

I have recently come back to doing IF tracking calories and exercise on MFP. My doc wasn't to happy about me fasting, so I tried other things for the last few month that hasn't worked. All I've done is gone up and down with the same 5 lbs never going anywhere. The only good thing is I haven't gained any weight, but I wasn't losing either.

I decided a few days ago that it doesn't matter what the doc says because I need control of T2 diabetes and that's one of the benefits of IF. Then I watched this site last night and decided that was all I needed to hear to prove that IF is the right decision for me. After all, it is MY health we are talking about here. Been doing this for only a few days and my daily exercise is back up to 45 minutes a day; I'm eating healthier food and I am already starting to feel great. Can't wait to see how this affects my blood work in a few weeks. I have blood work every 3 months and hope to have them drastically improved by the end of the year. Goal is to come off of the meds that I am taking.

My doctor is one of those good doctors who will see the test results and acknowledge what I'm doing when he sees the benefits working for me.

So glad to be back here.
