Day 5 of Paleo, and i gave in to a sugar craving!

  • Today would have been day 5 of eating 100% Paleo.
i've completely crashed with a sugar craving that was just gnawing at me since last night. I've had no problem turning away from eating any kind of grain and dairy, but it's the ravenous sugar cravings that are making this really difficult. I knew it was going to hard, but i didn't realize how strong the cravings would be. Since i'm losing weight, I've been trying to stay away from fruit (which is advised because natural sugar is still sugar), and only eat a few almonds or hazenuts to satisfy myself when i do get a craving (and i don't have any left !! lol).

Unfortunately today I went to my go-to drink that is grossly full of sugar and dairy. A Home made tall mug of cocoa, and it tasted incredibly too sweet and now i of course don't feel all that great now and i'm slightly ashamed that i did give in.

I was a huge sugar junkie before i decided to go Paleo and even though I prepared and planned out meals ahead of time i didn't plan on the cravings.
The first 3 days were ok, I'd have a craving, drink some ice water and it would go away. I tried the same thing last night and this morning and it just wouldn't go away.
I'm still going to avoid the restricted items for the rest of the day because one slip-up doesn't mean i can completely throw it out the window lol

Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid or overcome sugar cravings ?
  • I just wanted to say to get back on track and don't beat yourself up! You are human, you caved in to your craving, so now move on. Sorry, but sugar cravings are really hard for me too!
  • It can take a few days or up to a couple weeks to break a sugar addiction. Just get back on your clean diet and try to make it to two weeks. It's very likely you won't have any more physical cravings at that point (though perhaps still psychological). Counterintuitively, the lower you keep sugar the easier it is! IMO berries and avocado should still be in your diet, though.
  • I'm trying to stick to Paleo, when I have a sugar craving I go for a small portion 70% dark chocolate (Mark Sisson supports this) or I make baked cinnamon apples in the microwave. Yes, there are ~22 grams of natural sugar in an apple, but it has other nutrients and the cinnamon helps to prevent an insulin spike!
