Anyone else feel tired after high carb intake?

  • I dropped high carb foods and processed food along with junk and soda. But I do treat myself on a weekend. I started noticing a trend. When ever I eat bread, pasta, a high carb treat during my off days I become tired. I can eat a big salad with 2 boiled eggs and feel great but I would eat a bagel and I feel like I lose all my energy. FYI(I am not diabetic I had my blood checked).

I did a little reading on the subject and some articles argue that it can be a food allergy specifically to wheat or yeast.

Another article discussed pros and cons of consuming natural carbs vs refined carbs.

A third one was about how refined carbs are automatically converted into sugar and give you a rush of energy leading to a crash.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
  • For me, I've noticed that if I eat a normal serving of something... no problem. But if I eat a couple of things in a close span, like 2 consecutive meals, I feel tired and sick to my stomach. I haven't been tested for anything, but I've been keeping carbs lower around 120-150 a day and I feel better.
  • I am seeing a Nutritionist. She has me on a low carb diet - carb/protien meshed diet. It is working quite well for me. (Down 32 pounds in 2 months) I realize there are differing opinions of wht "low carb" is. I eat roughly 50-75 carbs a day. Most of them come from fruit and veggies. I usually have two servings of whole grain a day.

IMHO I wonder if you have insulin resistance. Also how much bread, pasta etc you eat at a time may be part of the problem. For example a bagel is actually like 3 servings of bread. One other thing, when you eat something that is higher in carbs do you eat protien along with it? It will help have less of an impact on your blood sugar.

I think all three of the articles you mentioned have valid points. I suggest tracking your food and how your feel, see if there are any trends between what you eat and how tired you are and find what makes you feel best.
  • Yes I am definitely tired after carbs, well if I only have carbs AND if it's like 2-3 servings of starchy or sugary carbs versus say a salad with no protein or little fat. My nutritionist told me aim for a protein each "snack/meal" years ago and it works for me energy wise.
  • Funny, I always thought this was normal reaction to eating carbs. Isn't that why some folks eat a bowl of cereal before bed and you're warned about avoiding a high carb lunch to stay awake at your desk in the afternoon?
  • Im doing carb cycling and I am really tired on low carb.
  • I'm tired after I eat large amounts of any type of food. Seriously, I can always go for a after-lunch/after-dinner nap if I eat a good portion.
  • If I eat rice in a meal, I feel sleepy about 45 minutes later. It happens every time.
  • I feel like crap when I eat too many carbs. Even "good" (whole food) carbs can cause issues if I'm eating too many or eating them without protein.
