Surgergirl2 - IE seems to be a process of relearning how to listen to our bodies. Each of us learn to do this our own way. I have counted calories to learn portions control. I never liked eating 3 meals & 3 snacks... I could do 3 & 1 when dieting. Some people write down everything they eat as they journal what they are eating, feeling, etc. I've journaled my food as well.

You seem to have a good plan. As long as it works for you, I would say go for it.

The activity of this thread is not always high and especially on the weekend. I'm sure others will be glad to share their thoughts when they check in.

You have a great weekend.

Hello...i'm new here, don't know much about intuitive eating, but i think i am giving up "dieting" because it just doesn't work for me. I always end up binging, whether an hour, a day, or a month after i begin the diet. Always.

So i've decided to stop thinking about it...stop trying newfangled ways to control my however. However, one thing that i DO think has been important in my journey is to eat set meals at mealtimes, instead of snacking all day. That is one habit i am definitely going to keep. I am trying to teach my body that it's ok to be hungry for an hour...i can wait an hour for the next mealtime.

So here is my non-diet plan:

1) Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (I've tried more frequent meals and i just end up thinking about food all the time).

2) Eat whatever i want, within reason, and as much as i want, within reason.

3) Log calories. Not sure about this one. What do you guys think? I think it helps if i write it down, that way i can just forget about it until the next mealtime (instead of keeping a running tally in my head).

Goal of all of this: stop binging and overeating. Weight will come off if i eat the amount of food that my body actually needs, instead of what my brain wants.

Is this kinda what intuitive eating is?

It was the vitrious humour detaching which they don't treat. I'm to see her again in 3 weeks. She was so nice. Giving God all the thanks for his mercies.

 Greetings to all. I am now a candidate for cataract surgery but I'd like to wait a bit as summer and fall are always soooo busy. Youngest DD's wedding a week from Sat.........190 on our farm!!!! Son and DH are cooking.

I binged on Saturday. Sigh.

Fortunately, I went right back to listening to my hunger signals, and I'm quite sure that I've learned my lesson.

Still, it sucks to realize that just because I consider myself an intuitive eater now, my binges aren't over until I figure out the real "why" behind them and solve the problem.

I hadn't binged in months before this episode, so I thought I had conquered the problem...

Time to dig deep!

Got the Go Undiet book today. She says she will give 45 Actions we can do to lose weight and maintain. Each Action is to be done 1 a week or until a person is comfortable with it. Does not have or give any food lists, no rules or food plans. Only read the first chapter so far, but it does sound much like IE so far. She says most diets tell us what to eat and when which brings us to what she calls common sense and to her common sense says that we should only eat when we are hungry. Those of you who like to journal what you eat will find it interesting that the 1st called the Kick-off Action is to journal what you eat, the time and your feelings at the time of eating. She says even journal the times when you don't want to write down what you ate because it is junk food or whatever. I did find it interesting that she said that diets cut calories back too far for the average man and woman which means we won't be able to stick with a diet because we get hungry. She said average woman needs 1800 - 2400 calories a day and average men neads 2200 - 3000.

Carolr I've heard of a lot of people who have had cataract surgey and see so much better after.

NewGirl24 Don't be too hard on yourself. IE is a process of learning to eat right rather than following a diet plan. Slips happen, but it isn't a disaster unless we allow it be. Learn what you need to from the binge and move on doing what you know to do and it will get easier.

When I got back to IE I gained a few lbs but I am totally committed to IE, so just kept doing what I know to do and I am starting to drop weight and it seems to be more stead. I have to admit that I am really enjoying the foods I'm eating. Probably because I'm eating what I really like and I'm pleased to say that without any rules of diets etc, that my hunger seems to be for what most call the more healthy foods.

Thanks, you guys! :)

This morning has been good IE-ing so far for me. A fig newton when I first woke up, and now I'm eating a bite of oatmeal here and there.

carolr3639 06-14-2011 04:22 PM

I haven't had a fig newton in ages.....sounds so good!!!! I've been craving strawberries. We went through 4 quarts this last week. Today, we've been married 42 years. Where do those years go?

pattygirl63 06-15-2011 12:17 AM

I haven't had fig newtons in a while either. I am really enjoying fruit right now especially cantaloupe, honeydew and strawberries.

This book is really an easy read as she explains things so simply that it is easy to understand. She brings out the fact that our problem is not the carbs etc but the chemicals and junk they put in it when processing foods. Some things I already knew or had heard but didn't know the why's. For example, red wine does have healthy benefits if only one drink for a woman and two for men. It helps prevent blood clots and promotes HDL cholesterol. I've always heard that more is unhealthy, but no one ever says why. She explains that if you have more than the recommended amount is thought to raise tryglicerides. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about healthy IE.

Today I learned that my Daddy went to the ER last night with chest pains. He was home but very sore when I talked to my step-mom, I've tried to call to learn more but get no answer. I don't know if he is in the hospital or what. My sister is supposed to call me sometime to more to give me an update. He will be 88 in a few weeks. Sure hope the problem is fixable.

do you mind me asking how you kept your arms so cute? you cant even tell that they were ever not tiny mine did not shrink up as well.

also, looking good ! !

carolr3639 06-15-2011 09:52 AM

Trish, so sorry about your dad. That must be difficult not knowing. And he is getting to an advanced age where you just never know what will happen. My FIL is here for 2 weeks before the wedding. He has multiple health problems....heart, cancer, but stays pretty active. He is 85.

NewGirl24 06-15-2011 03:09 PM

I had a delicious meal of leftovers for lunch! Leftover beans and rice mixed with leftover broccoli with vinegar, all mixed together and nuked. YUM.

pattygirl63 06-15-2011 10:25 PM

Thanks Carolr. I finally talked to my Daddy this evening and he is feeling a little better. He went to his primary doctor today who couldn't find anything but is sending him to a cardiology for further tests. He was sent home with nitroglycerin and aspirin. It is amazing to me how these people in their 80's really fight to go on. Daddy said he is working to change his diet and is going to get back to his exercising. I will keep you FIL in my prayers. I know you are busy with the wedding plans and hope it will be terrific.

Newgirl I'm one those people who mixes some of my foods together as well. My DH who hates casseroles, thinks I'm nuts.

Well, I'm doing good with my eating, but now I need to work on getting a full nights sleep. I've been getting only 4-6 hrs a night and that isn't cutting it. I love getting up earlier in the morning so I need to start going to bed earlier so I don't have to take naps in the afternoon.
