I was just wondering if any one out there has had any experience good or bad with the Slim Fast program. I am going to be starting it since I found how to make different shakes instead of just the plain ones that they sell already made. If there is anyone out there who is starting it, thinking of starting it, or already on it, please let me know. I would love to find a buddy who is doing it also. I will post on the Buddy Up! board.

Thanks,

Hi Amber. I'm not on slim-fast but did do it in the past. I lost ALOT of weight on it. I did try to go back on 2 months ago but found I couldn't stay on it more than 4 day of doing 2 shakes a day. I'm doing low carb right now. I lost 20 lbs on it last jan-march. I tried ww but ate to much. the carb thing works for me. Good Luck!!!! If you stick to it,it works but warning you have to keep drinking a least one aday after you lose or you'll gain back once you start eating real food again. Hope this helped

I tried Slimfast along time ago and it worked. I lost about 20 or 25 lbs. I gained it all back and then some. The problem is not in losing the weight. It is in keeping it off. Slimfast might be a good way to get some of the weight off, but it has to be followed with a change in eating habits. I've tried to do Slimfast again over the years but have such a strong desire to actually chew something that I can't stay with it for more than a week.

Hi -

Just had to add my two cents. I tried it a couple of years ago, and found that it just made me shaky and irritable. It's no wonder, the things are filled with sugar. For 200 calories, I'd much rather have a large veggie salad with some lowfat dressing, or perhaps a chicken breast. Maybe other people can be satisifed with liquid meals, but I need something to chew on.

keelabean 01-04-2001 10:21 AM

I did try the low carb diet a few times. The first time I tried it, I was all movtivated and lost 15 lbs in three weeks. The only thing is, is that I had a personal trainer and I passed out one day in on of our sessions and he made me tell him what I was eating and I told him. He told me that I will have to change my diet if I am going to be working out like I am. So, I went out and bought some multi vitamins and that helped me some, but then I still didn't feel good which means I probably wasn't doing something right. My mother lost about 60 pounds doing that low carb diet, but she is gaining it back now that she isnt' on it anymore. Personally, I love bread and milk too much. I even tried sugarbusters, but it is just to hard for me to stick too.

I am going to give Slim Fast a shot. I want to lost a total of 100 pounds, but at least 40 by my wedding date which is May 19th. So, I will probably use the slim fast to help me until my wedding and then just switch to something else afterward to get the rest of the weight off.

I appreciate your input on this and if any one else has any they can add, I would appreciate it also.

Thanks,

I did slimfast a few years ago, and like any fad diet, I lost a lot of weight, only to put it back on as soon as I started eating normally again.
I am now on a healthy eating plan, which is low in fat and calories, and also exercising for at least 30 minutes a day, and have lost 27lb in the last 6 months. This might seem a bit slow to some of you, but believe me I have tried almost every diet there is and this is whats working for me so far. I now feel better and look younger than I did 20 years ago.
Best wishes

I like slimfast. It is the only breakfast I will make time for. It makes me not crave chocolate and gives me a vitamin boost. I still take an apple or pear with me for mid-morning and eat right and exercise all day. I think its a personal choice. I like them, and if you eat right at your other meals, I think you could be very successful. Good luck! :D

Tinkerbell_70 01-17-2001 09:55 PM

I wanted to speak on the Slim Fast subject also. I have used it and lost a little bit. But it is full of sugar. Right now I am on a sensible eating and exercise plan<need more of the exercise>...I cut out all sugar except for the natural sugar I get from my 3 servings of fruit a day and the 7 carbohydrates I get a day. A carbohydrate is 15gm of carbs per serving. As an example you can have 2 slices of 40 calorie bread and that is one carbohydrate exchange. Plus you still get 2 servings<16oz> of milk a day. So you do not have to give up your bread and milk. I have lost 20 lbs to date. I just started my 3rd session of First Place<Christian Health Program> I weigh in for the first time tommorrow. I am really excited about it. I have done well and drank 80oz of water everyday. I cannot wait to see what the scales show!....Good Luck on the Slim Fast..but remember there is a better way it's slower but it lasts. Thats whats important to me.

Bumby 01-18-2001 02:12 AM

I used SlimFast once during a very successful calorie-counting + exercise approach to weight loss. I found it helped me focus, by limiting my choices about what to eat. I pretty much had the same thing for breakfast (SlimFast) every day, and the same thing for lunch most days (soup), and some stand-by dinners that I knew the calories for. By exposing myself to too many choices, I get all caught up in what food TASTES like (rather than the fuel I need to live) and eat things out of curiosity rather than hunger. Now, obviously, I couldn't live that way long-term, but if I had a short-term goal (wedding) and a long-term goal that stretched beyond it (another 60 lbs to ideal weight), I might choose a very structured plan like SlimFast to jump-start me and then switch to WW to learn how to eat properly for the long haul. It's not like you won't have plenty of time on WW if you join up after the wedding with >50 to lose! By the time you get to goal, you'll be a pro at healthy eating for life.

diamondlady2 01-18-2001 04:12 AM

well i have been on herbalife (which is similar to slimfast) u replace two shakes for two meals of your choice. I like a lot of people have gotten bored with the shakes and found with herbalife u can put in cereal, yogurt, etc. trouble is herbalife program has too many pills and becomes expensive. i have tried just about every diet plan etc and have been sucessful. however i found that slimfast has same ingredients as herbalife shake mix so i have decided to incorporate the two programs omit herbalife shake mix and save money!! but i really think the key to your weight loss programs is PORTION CONTROL!!! SLIMFAST, HERBALIFE ETC ARE LIKE STEPPING STONES TO HELP U GET USED TO CUTTING DOWN. HOWEVER I THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA ONCE U HAVE LOST ALL YOUR WEIGHT TO INCORPORATE ONE SHAKE A DAY IN YOUR DIET BECAUSE IT IS HEALTHY FOR YOU!! SOMEONE LIKE ME WORKING A SWINGSHIFT THIS KIND OF THING WORKS FOR ME!! ALSO EXERCISE IS THE OTHER KEY!! NOT REAL HEAVY DUTY BUT AT LEAST 30-60 MINS A DAY CARIO VASCULAR WALKING, SWIMMING, RIDING A BIKE, TREADMILL, ETC. AND MAYBE EVEN LIFTING LT WEIGHTS FOR UPPER BODY AND STOMACH COULD BE INCLUDED. I HAVE FOUND WHEN I INCORPORATE ALL THESE THINGS I LOSE A LOT OF WEIGHT!! lol I WAS DOWN AND OUT FOR ABOUT 3 MOS WITH A PINCHED NERVE AND WAS UNABLE TO EXERCISE DURING THIS TIME WHICH OF COURSE I PUT THE WEIGHT ON. ANYWAY EATING HEALTHY AND EXERCISING TO HELP BOOST YOUR METABOLISM I FEEL IS THE TOTAL KEY. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!! AND HOPE I HAVE NOT BORED YOU!! DIAMONDLADY2

kennedy 01-18-2001 08:51 AM

Hi Diamondlady. I too was on herbalife but they sucked me into almost selling it NOT ANYMORE!!! I just hate the herbalife shakes they were terrible!!! So I also tried slimfast and it actually started to work faster if I had lo carb lo fat dinners!!! I ended up losing about a lb a day on just the slimfast alone when I realized the vitamins were so unecessary. It didn't change the weightloss at all!! Just some advice .....don't tell your dist. your switching shakes because they will try everything to get you not too!! It really does work even better and tastes awesome!!! Now that Im pregnant I actually have a slimfast as a snack some days or for breakfast. Also I the weight will stay off if you do the maintenance properly ie:don't revert to old eating habits! My sil has kept off 45 lbs since having her DD 2 years ago!!Just my 2 cents!

MrsJim 01-18-2001 09:54 AM

Just had to add my two cents here on Slimfast. As other posters said, it is mostly sugar and just a little tiny bit of fiber. Kinda like having an Ovaltine with a teaspoon of bran...

I lost 80 pounds on Optifast 12 years ago and have kept it off, but was medically supervised (had to go in twice or more a week), plus the Optifast formula was/is more nutritionally formulated. I was also extremely motivated during that time to lose the weight!

Just think what you can have for that 250 calories - a big salad and a slice of French bread...a large bowl of minestrone soup and some crackers...a turkey or tuna sandwich with light mayo and tons of veggies on light bread...or how about a tuna salad with tomatoes...etc.

Point is, any of those options will fill your stomach and keep you satisfied a lot longer than a can of Slimfast, which is mostly sugar and water - not to mention more nutrients such as beta carotene, etc.

hi kennedy! appreciate your input or ur two cents!!! I HATE THE TASTE OF THOSE HERBALIFE SHAKES TOO!! oh and by the way.... they are trying to get me to sell the stuff too! imagine that. i just got another flavor of slim fast too tonight. its much cheaper than the herbalife shakes and taste so...... much better!! anyway i must say that when i did follow ther herbalife program it did work!! however i get tired of all those pills!! and feel sometimes that they are unnecessary. so u see i will be slowly weaning myself off of this stuff. i just wanted to sell enough of the products to get them almost for nothing.. but i really couldn't get enough people into the program... because it is EXPENSIVE!!! and way too many pills. i did not understand what u meant at the end of your reply. were u talking about your sister with the slimfast program?? i think its better and cheaper than herbalife and tastes much better. thanx for your input.

dixiepix207 01-18-2001 10:55 PM

Mrs. Jim - you said what I was just thinking! I read what was in the Slim Fast cans and there is a LOT of carb & sugars and not much else. I eat small meals often and I can easily have a great, satisfying meal of the right things for the same calories and enjoy it a whole lot more! I think it works for people who do not have the know-how to put together low-cal balanced meals and want to take the easy way out. However, they are not learning a better way to eat and still lose so chances are, they'll gain the weight back when they stop the shakes. Just my two cents worth.
MSB

kennedy 01-18-2001 11:47 PM

I don't agree it is for people that take the easy way out at ALL! I use it still becuase it fills me up unlike these small meals that make me hungrier and it works! I also don't have the time you seem to have to make these meals! I have a small child alot of appts. and a home to take care of which leaves me very little time to make meals and I don't enjoy pre-made meals!! I know very well how to make proper meals I did it all my life until having a baby and had a steady weight of 140 and a size 8 but having a baby gave me an appetite that wouldn't go away,so please don't automatically assume otherwise! It is all in the persons choice and by saying people take the easy way out because they happen to like the shakes and feel good when drinking them, it is just wrong!! How would you feel if I said it was ignorent of you to say such a thing to people who are really trying and happen to enjoy the plan there on?? I don't think you'd like it? I don't see why it is so hard to just support peoples choices and what works for them. Were all different and it doesn't mean we take the easy way out.It just means we have different tastes!! Thats it. Im sorry if this was harsh but it really makes me mad when people knock even slightly what works for some and they really enjoy. This forum should be for support in any case not the latter.

diamondlady2 01-19-2001 04:39 AM

i like you kennedy hate when people knock down a plan that is working for someone else!! as for the slimfast plan i used it yrs ago and it also worked for me like the herbalife plan did. i do prefer the shake mix rather than the cans because i make smoothies with it... add fruit for a variation at least one meal. however i like you do not have the time to cook these big lowfat meals i work a swing shift and have to take care of my house and family so the only time i really cook a lot is when i am off!!however to all you others i still think the key to keeping your weight off--- is PORTION CONTROL!!! AND 30-60 MINS OF SOME KIND OF CARDIO VASCULAR EXERCISING AS I HAD POSTED ON MY PREVIOUS REPLY HERE! I AM ALMOST 44 YRS OLD HAVE AND AS LONG AS I KEEP MY PORTIONS DOWN AND EXERCISE 4-6 TIMES A WEEK FOR ABOUT 30-60 MINS I AM ABLE TO KEEP
MY WEIGHT DOWN AND STILL WEAR MY SIZE 8'S AND EVEN SOME SIZE 7'S!!!! I ONLY TURN TO SLIMFAST TO HELP ME GET BACK ON THE TRACK!! I STILL ENJOY SLIMFAST WHEN I AM ON MY MIDNIGHT SHIFT... AND DON'T FEEL LIKE EATING I BRING A SHAKE. BUT I KNOW IT WORKS FOR PEOPLE I HAVE FRIENDS THAT USE IT ALL THE TIME JUST LIKE ME. AND OTHERS DO OTHER THINGS. I NEVER PUT THEM DOWN IF ANYTHING I HELP ENCOURAGE THEM AND GIVE THEM DIFFERENT IDEAS. I THOUGHT THAT WAS WHAT THIS MESSAGE BOARD WAS ALL ABOUT.

Hi! I am new here! I have been doing slimfast since January 8, 2001. So far I have lost 10#. I like the structure of the plan. I hate planning meals all the time. I like the meal on the go bars. Very convenient to stick in your purse if you'll be away or whatever. I sometimes have shakes depends on my mood. I especially like the oatmeal raisin bar for breakfast with coffee. I find they fill me up. I am hoping to lose about 70-80 pounds on this plan and to continue to use to maintain. So far it works for me. Have a great day everyone and good luck!

diamondlady2 01-22-2001 08:30 PM

hi emmey! just wanted to with u good luck with your weightloss goal!! i like the slimfast bars too. i think its the peanut butter one i like not sure.... but they fill me up too. they are a nice change from the shakes. however i have learned to make different shakes so that i don't get bored.

I tried Slim Fast for a total of two weeks. I just couldn't deal with having only a shake for breakfast and one for lunch. It did nothing to stop my stomach from growling until dinner. I was grouchy all day because I was starving! They advertise that it "fills you up" but I have yet to see that in my own experience with it. By the way, I lost no pounds on this plan. I kept sneaking food when I felt too hungry to go on so I guess that explains why I didn't lose any weight on it. http://www.3fatchicks.com/ubb//lol.gif

I have done Slimfast lots of times. Don't recall whether I lost weight or not. Usually it was a short-term thing to jump start some other diet. What my husband and I found was that for the same calories in a Slimfast shake you could have cereal and skim milk for breakfast (or oatmeal or cream of wheat). For lunch, a sandwich with lean meat and light bread and mustard. So, we were like, "Hey! that's real food. Why keep doing these shake things and being hungry all the time?" (Plus the reason that they make you so hungry is because of all the sugar.) So now, we just keep Slimfast on hand for emergencies. I actually tried doing it a few weeks ago but it upset my stomach so badly I had to quit, so I think my Slimfast days are over.

This is in regards to the SlimFast I've tried it also and it has too much sugar if your goal is to lose weight. The low carb high protien works for me. I've lost alot of inches and I work out really hard. I do kickboxing and I love it and just got a treadmil do that every morning and kickboxing at least 3 times a week. Thanks

Whiskey's Mom 02-21-2001 09:23 AM

have been usng Slimfast and other meal replacement bars and drinks fo a year now and I have lost 45 pounds!I only replace one meal A day and get lots of excersise. I found that it is easiest for me to use it for lunch breaks at work. That way you don't have access to food if you still have that desire to fill up. Also make sure to have a large beverage, preferably wattter, with it. I like the pounds off bars and the power bars best and the slimfast snack bars are to die for. I only folow this diet six days a week and have one day off to enjoy a treat. It may take me a long time to loose the weight but I plan on its not ever coming back!

MrsJim 02-21-2001 10:20 AM

I think that's the best thing, if you are going to use a meal replacement product -- don't replace more than one meal a day. And DO check the label to make sure that most of the calories aren't sugar. If you do your homework (on the Net or at the store) you can find lots of meal replacement shakes that are made with little or no sugar. Like I said on the other thread, speaking for me personally, taking in a lot of sugar at once makes me even hungrier!

I've been using "Lean Body for Her" (if you're gonna buy it, go to nutritionexpress.com -- much cheaper than anywhere else) replacement shakes the past few days. You mix them up with ice water and they are THICK. I can't have more than one or two a day, though -- gotta have my real food! There's no sugar in them, which is good - however, no fiber -- that's why you gotta eat real food with them.

I just had to add something that my dad said when he was using Slim-fast for a little while back in the early 90's - cracked me up!

"I don't know why I'm not losing weight...I've been doing what they said! I have a shake for breakfast at 7:00; one for lunch at noon; one for a snack at 3:00; then, a sensible dinner...from 5:00 until 9:00!" ;)

That's his old North Carolinan sense of humor coming out!!! (Dad was a doctor in the Army in the 50's - and he is GREAT fun - Mom and Dad have been married for 40 years as of this month - I wish the same happiness to everyone!). Take care!

Mini Mony 02-22-2001 09:22 AM

MrsJim Have you tried the Kashi Go Lean shakes or bars. They have soy protein and fiber. The shakes and bars fluctuate between 6-7gm of fiber and the cereal has 10gm.

I've only tried the cereal and basically it tastes like looseleaf paper. Has anyone tried the shakes or bars...how do they taste? I'd love to have a good protein/fiber bar that I could just carry in my bag for those frantic-don't-have-time-to-eat days. Any suggestions that taste good?

Mony - you crack me up! 'tastes like looseleaf paper'. Is that the canary yellow or white? :)

I tried the "Good Friends" cereal (I think!) a little over a year ago. It was okay, but I think I'll stick to alternating good ol' Shredded Wheat and oatmeal! Basically, I have a few favorites -- I just pick up whatever is on sale at the time. Last year, Jim weaned himself off his Lucky Charms addiction. He now eats Raisin Bran and he also likes Puffins (you can get 'em at Trader Joes).

I usually don't buy the meal replacement bars unless we're out hiking or on long bike rides. I like the Luna bars.

10 Pounds to go!!!!

meredith~ 02-24-2001 05:57 AM

I can't give up a whole meal for a shake either. I usually eat about 6 times a day so every so often I throw a Slimfast in there for a chocolate fix. I know 250 calories is a lot, but thats how much is in a bottle of Mt Dew. I would rather have a chocolate shake with vitamins and fiber than that nasty old Dew I used to drink religiously.

Good luck to everyone, in whatever you do.

Oh yeah, someone else here said that they like Luna bars-those are the best bars I've found. The Slimfast ones are good, but tiny and not worth the points. Any other good ones out there?

memyselfandlisa 02-28-2001 01:26 PM

Hi my name is Lisa, WOW!!! I have never seen so may negative answers before. It kinda makes me laugh really, I read that most of you think that Slimfast has too much suger, well I got to say this, IT HAS NO MORE SUGER IN IT THAT YOUR AVERAGE LOWFAT YOGURT, TAKE A LOOK, YOU WILL SEE FOR YOURSELF LOL. I think you should GO FOR IT!!!!
I have been on Slimfast since 17th January 2001, and have lost 27LBs so far.
I have 2 shakes aday, a really good lowfat dinner, and several low fat snacks throughout the day. I excercise 6 days a week, on my treadmill for approx 30-45 mins aday. I also have a great Slimfast club, please e-mail me anytime for support/motivation while doing Slimfast. My e-mail address is [email protected]
I would love to hear from you. LISA :D

MrsJim 02-28-2001 09:06 PM

Lisa - the last time I checked, Slim Fast had 35 grams of sugar.

a gram of sugar has four calories - 4 x 35 = 140 sugar calories.

Slim fast has 220 calories per serving.

That's WELL over 50% sugar. Sugar does not fill you up - and we all know it's not good for you. Speaking for myself, if I eat something with lots of sugar, it will not satisfy me for long - just makes me hungrier usually.

BTW, the yogurt I eat has no sugar in it at all - except what is naturally in the fruit. I buy either Safeway's Light yogurt (90 calories per serving) or Dannon's Light N' Fit. Neither one has any added sugar. So you see, it's all a matter of label reading!

I am new to this thread but not new to slimfast. I hope no one will mind if i voice my opionion about the slimfat debate here. I am looking at my can of powder slimfast and it has 12 grams of sugar ( pretty good i think) 5 grams of fiber ( also a good amount) and 12grams of protein. See i do read the label and i think slimfast is a good way to lose weight. I can drink it at breakfast and it fills me up until lunch.

Liza 02-28-2001 11:48 PM

One more opinion to add. I use Slim Fast powder as a fast snack to keep myself from eating out of control while I make dinner. It is a better choice for me to make given my situation, it gets a milk into me (quite a feat in itself), and I make it with so much ice, it can count as a water.) For 3 points I can sip a 24 ounce glass of it the whole time I am cooking dinner.

It also does act as a sweet for me, it is sweet, but that works for me too. I do not know if it could take the place of a meal though, I need a pretty solid breakfast.

Overall, you would have to balance the pros and cons and if nothing else, try a can and see how it goes.

I do like the Lunar Bars, they are great 3 point morning snack.

I do like the Kashi Good Friends cereal and have to say that the cereal is one of those things, either you like it or not. I do not know of who are on the fence about it.

Try different things, who knows what will be a good choice and strike your fancy.

Liza

memyselfandlisa 03-01-2001 12:36 AM

A MESSAGE FOR MRS JIM, I DONT KNOW WHAT SLIMFAST CAN YOU WERE LOOKING AT BUT THE ONE IN FRONT OM ME SAY THE ONE IN FRONT OF ME SAY 15 GRAMS OF SUGAR. HAVE A GOOD DAY LISA

memyselfandlisa 03-01-2001 12:39 AM

FOR WWGAL, THANKS FOR BACKING ME UP, AT FIRST I THOUGHT I WAS READING MY CAN WRONG LOL, BUT NO, I GUESS I WASNT AFTER ALL. ITS AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN LEARN IF "YOU READ THE LABELS" HUH LISA

memyselfandlisa 03-01-2001 12:50 AM

AND I GOT TO SAY JUST ONE MORE THING LOL, DANNON LIGHT N FIT YOGURT HAS 8 GRAMS OF SUGAR, I KNOW THIS BECUASE I HAVE 20 OF THEM IN MY FRIDGE AND I EAT THEM EVERY DAY.
SO IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW EXACTLY WHAT LABEL IT IS THAT YOU ARE READING. ARE U SURE "YOU" ARE READING IT CORRECTLY LOL

MrsJim 03-01-2001 02:01 AM

Lisa - no need to shout!

Here's the nutrition stats right off Slim Fast's own website http://www.slimfast.com/products/rtd_choc_royale.asp

in case you want to check my research...

Calories - 220
Total Fat - 3 g
Cholesterol - 5 mg
Sodium - 220 mg
Total Carbohydrate - 5 g
Sugars - 35 g
Protein - 10 g

So, YES, there is indeed 35 grams of sugar in Slim Fast. In fact, the Vanilla versions and the juice versions have even more sugar, up to 39 grams of sugar per serving, actually.

In comparision, the product that I use occasionally has the following nutritional info:

Calories - 200
Total Fat - 1g
Cholesterol - 15 mg
Sodium - 120 mg
Total Carbos - 19g
Sugar - 1 g (yes, that's 1 gram!)
Protein - 30 g

And I paid $30 for 20 servings by searching the Web and finding it on sale. Plus it tastes great - very thick and creamy (you mix it with water). The point I was trying to make is that, if you want to go the meal replacement route, you will find that if you do your research there are products out there that are WAY better for you than SlimFast is.

Now, as far as the yogurt, I admit I might have been incorrect on the Dannon but I KNOW I was not on the Safeway Lucerne Light Yogurt which is the one I usually purchase since it's usually on sale for 50 cents or less. In addition, Jim has to watch his sugar intake and the Safeway Light Peach is his favorite! The only time I buy the Dannon is when it is on sale, so I apologize for the assumption I made in thinking that the Dannon and Safeway yogurts were identical. Rest assured though that there ARE some sugar free yogurts out there!

I'd just like to close this by saying that getting into a heated debate about something like SlimFast is ridiculous, and I for one would just like to end it right now...

HEY I HAVE NO PROBLEM ENDING THIS RIGHT NOW, BUT IF YOU PEOPLE SHOWED A LITTLE MORE SUPPORT FOR OTHERS, NO MATTER WHAT THEY WERE USING I WOULDNT HAVE A PROBLEM, THAT IS THE TROUBLE WITH THESE SO CALLED SUPPORT BOARD, THERE IS NO SUPPORT. ITS A BUNCH OF STUPID FREAKY PEOPLE THAT GOT NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN ***** ABOUT A PRODUCT, JUST CUASE IT DIDNT WORK FOR THEM.
AND I ALWAYS TYPE IN CAP,
AND TO LET YOU KNOW, I DRINK CHOCOLATE ROYALE, AND I HAVE THE CAN IN FRONT OF ME, AND THERE IS 17 GRAMS OF SUGAR IN IT, I ALSO WENT AND GOT ANOTHER CAN TO MAKE SURE IT WANST A TYPO, AND IT SAYS THE SAME THING.
DISCUSSCUSION OVER!!
