Default Poor Pluto

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/0....ap/index.html

Pluto is no longer considered a planet. Our solar system now contains just 8 planets.

This makes me melancholy....which is silly! The universe is just the same; how we define it is a bit changed today.

I feel the same way. I remember when I was just learning about all the planets and I felt that Pluto didn't really fit in. It was so much smaller and followed its own path, without having to run parallel with the others. Somehow, I found that sort of endearing. You know, like "hang in there, little planet."

It is kind of sad that Pluto has essentially been stripped of its title. Maybe it's also sad that I tend to personify the ex-planet as if it were a living thing. I guess it's just kind of hard when you've been taught one thing all your life, and then suddenly that gets changed.

Stay strong, and I'm sure we'll get through the loss. And besides, I have a sneaking suspicion that the scientists will end up changing their minds again. They always seem to be talking about wanting to add other planets and I don't know if they will ever be satisfied.

Just think of the cost of this "decision." All textbooks are now incorrect, and they state it will take 10 years to get them all up to date again. And, all the planetariums around the world, they usually have a lot of programs about the planets. All those programs will need to be redone. Stupid decision if you ask me.

I think that they didn't want to add the other two Pluto type "planets" found recently in our solar system to the list of planets. Both (one is nicknamed Xena) are masses of Ice just like pluto. So the science community, whoever they are, were asked to vote to either demote pluto or add the other two. Either way the textbooks would have changed.

What happened to Poseidon? Didnt they discover a 10th planet some time back...???

Thinking of the whole universe for a few minutes makes me feel that everything is so hypothetical, even we, our creations etc etc....well! dont even start me on that!!!

They're saying Pluto will be in a new category of "minor" or "dwarf" planets. I guess it's kind of like being kicked out of the major leagues and demoted to a AAA team . The Universe just won't seem the same without little Pluto. I can remember teaching our son to learn the positions of the planets thusly:

My (Mercury)
Very (Venus)
Excellent (Earth)
Mother (Mars)
Just (Jupiter)
Served (Saturn)
Us (Uranus)
Nine (Neptune)
Pizzas (Pluto)

Maybe we'll now have to change it to ......Served Us Nachos (or something).
